the top picks, the fashion, and the walk across the stage that shocked everyone. and what a morning it is, everybody. we're going to start with that breaking news, that moment this morning that has never happened before, a north korean leader walking into south korea. >> kim jong-un walked hand in hand with his rival, president moon jae-in, before sitting down for their first face-to-face talks on nuclear disarmament. the meeting is being described as sincere and candid. abc's tara palmeri joins us now with the latest. tara, good morning. what a big moment. >> reporter: right, good morning, diane and kendis. that's right. the world is watching this historic meeting because it lays the groundwork for president trump's meeting with kim jong-un. kim actually joked that he hopes that this meeting means he'll no longer be waking up his neighbors in the south with missile launches. this morning, a historic step

forward in the decades long standoff between north and south korea. they aim to sign a peace treaty by the end of the year. this, after the first time if 60 years that a north key yan leader stepped into south korea. now the two leaders are holding hands. walking toward into the south, greeted by cheers, and then unexpectedly walking back into the north to even more applause. north korean leader kim jong-un and south korean leader moon jae-in talking about future peace. the south's invite to the north to take part in the seoul olympics was one of the first steps forward to normalizing relations. the summit focused on denuclearization of north korea will lay the groundwork for president trump's meeting in the coming months. earlier this week president trump lavished praise on kim. >> he really has been very open. and i think very honorable from

everything we're seeing. >> reporter: past peace talks have failed because of a lack of commitment from kim's predecessors. kim said he was ready for, quote, heartfelt, sincere and honest talks, adding that he wants momentum so they don't repeat the past. kim writing in a guest book, new history starts from now. over easter weekend, secretary of state mike pompeo, then cia director, secretly met with north korean leaders and unexpectedly had a meeting with kim jong-un. the parents of u.s. student otto warm jbier filed a lawsuit against north korea. for torturing and killing their son. they say that kim held him hostage to have leverage over the u.s. on sanctions. diane, kendis. >> all right, a lot going on there. tara palmeri for us live in d.c., thanks, tara. and dozens of women who accused bill cosby of sexual misconduct are saying they feel relieved and vindicated after he was convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting a pennsylvania woman. >> well, after the verdict came

down, an angry cosby actually blew up in the courtroom and cursed at the prosecutor. abc's maggie rulli is in norristown, pennsylvania, with the details. >> reporter: bill cosby walked out of the courthouse thursday afternoon a guilty man. >> you're a pervert. don't wave to us. >> reporter: a very different scene for andrea constand seen here with a huge smile hugging supporters. other cosby accusers were coming out of court in tears. >> this jury has shown that the me too -- what the me too movement is saying is that women are worthy of being believed. >> reporter: a jury of 12 deciding unanimously that the 80-year-old comedian drugged and sexually assaulted constand at his pennsylvania home in 2004. >> she was that first courageous person that stood up in public to go to the authorities and say that bill cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her. >> reporter: finding him guilty on all three counts of aggravated indecent assault. >> oh, my god. unbelievable. unbelievable. >> reporter: upon hearing the first guilty verdict, cosby simply put his head down. later when the district attorney argued cosby should not get bail

because he could flee on his plane, cosby lashed out yelling, he doesn't have a plane, you expletive. his lawyers say they will appeal. >> we are very disappointed by the verdict. we don't think mr. cosby is guilty of anything. and the fight is not over. >> reporter: but for now the comedian once loved by so many as dr. huxtable, fat albert and the face of jell-o pudding is a convicted felon. cosby was released from bail and is now at home on house arrest where he'll remain until his sentencing hearing, likely in three to four months. diane and kendis. >> in the meantime, maggie, abc's chief legal analyst dan abrams says cosby likely won't spend the maximum 30 years in prison. he expects a five to ten-year prison sentence. new sexual misconduct allegations are rocking nbc. two former nbc staffers are reportedly accusing former "nightly news" anchor tom brokaw of making unwanted sexual advances in the '90s. one involved a woman who was a production assistant at the

time. the other woman is former nbc news correspondent and fox news anchor linda vester. >> even though i know i was not in any way at fault in what happened to me with tom brokaw, i still suffered years of both humiliation, isolation, and shame. because of his power, i was unable to talk about it. so i was silenced. and there was nothing i could do to seek recourse because to have done so at nbc would have been the end of my career. >> brokaw is denying all allegations. in a statement released overnight, he says, quote, i met with linda vester on two occasions, both at her request 23 years ago because she wanted advice with respect to her career at nbc. the meetings were brief, cordial and appropriate. and despite linda's allegations, i made no romantic overtures

toward her at any time -- at that time or any other. developing overnight evacuations remain in place this morning across 70 square miles surrounding an oil refinery in wisconsin. it took firefighters more than eight hours to put out the flames that were fueled by burning asphalt. at least 15 people were injured. one seriously. the plumes of thick, oily, and acrid smoke spread for miles. the cause of that blast is under investigation this morning. we're going to take a break now and take a look at your weather for this friday morning. ♪ a new storm system is bringing a second round of showers along the east coast. rain is expected today from d.c. to boston. up to two inches is possible in some areas. there are some flood watches in parts of maine because the rain combined with snow melt could raise rivers and creeks. and looking at today's high temperatures, that rain will keep temperatures in the 50s here in new york. mostly in the 70s in the ohio valley. 60s for most of the west coast. phoenix is on a roll, 98

new video just in shows mike pompeo on his first official trip as secretary of state. he just arrived in brussels hours after being confirmed and sworn in. pompeo is meeting with other foreign top diplomats to plan an upcoming summit. and a new development this morning on the departure of rob porter, president trump's staff secretary who resigned amid allegations of domestic violence

against his two ex-wives. well, in a newly released report the fbi says it informed the white house counsel about derogatory information on porter more than a year ago. that conflicts with the time line put out by the white house indicating they were told much later. stormy daniels' attorney now says her case is stronger thanks to an interview from president trump. during the phone call on fox news, the president acknowledged that his personal attorney michael cohen represented him in the stormy daniels deal. now, trump previously denied knowing about a payment cohen made to the adult film star days before the election. experts say that payment could amount to an illegal contribution if it's proven the payment was made to silence daniels about her alleged affair with the president in an effort to protect trump's candidacy. >> michael would represent me and represent me on some things. he represents me like with this crazy stormy daniels deal. he represented me and, you know, from what i see, he did absolutely nothing wrong. there were no campaign funds

going into this, which would have been a problem. >> then why is he pleading the fifth? >> because he's got other things. he's got businesses and from what i understand, they're looking at his businesses. >> well, within hours prosecutors in new york cited the president's comments in court papers saying most of the records seized by the fbi from cohen should not be protected by attorney/client privilege because the president said cohen handles, quote, very little of his legal work. well, thousands of teachers in colorado and arizona rally again today for increased education funds as well as pay. it's called red for ed, and the protesters there filled the streets of phoenix yesterday. arizona teachers have been on strike since last week. and in colorado, many schools will be closed yet again today. nearly 1.5 million students combined have missed classes in both states. get ready to pay a little more for amazon prime. the cost of a membership is rising 20% to $119. the jump affects new prime members as of may 11th. existing customers will start paying more when they renew as

to face charges in 2 of at least 12 murders he's accused of. >> but the case is raising new questions about privacy after investigators revealed they cracked the case using popular genealogy websites. abc's natalie brunell has more. >> reporter: this is the man sacramento sheriffs' detectives believe is the elusive golden state killer, 72-year-old joseph james deangelo. authorities revealing they tracked him down using family trees on genealogy websites where individuals submit their own dna. >> we started some surveillance. we were able to get some discarded dna, and we were able to confirm what we thought we already knew, that we had our man. >> reporter: the golden state killer is believed to have committed 12 murders, nearly 50 rapes and more than 100 burglaries in california from 1976 to 1986. elizabeth hupp was 16 when a man authorities believe was deangelo broke into her central california bedroom while she was sound asleep and tried to abduct her. her father tried to stop them and ended up killed.

>> i loved my father dearly. and he took him away from me. >> reporter: the killer spreading fear, making taunting phone calls to police. >> you're never gonna catch me you dumb [ expletive ]. >> reporter: and victims. >> gonna kill you. >> reporter: we're learning detectives painstakingly examined online dna information and family trees for matches with dna samples from crime scenes, and finally tracked down deangelo. they wouldn't release which genealogy website they used or who related to deangelo submitted their dna. natalie brunell, abc news, los angeles. the fbi is now offering $20,000 for information leading to the arrest of a cop killer in maine. the nationwide manhunt is still under way for john williams, but investigators say they're right now focusing on a wooded area west of bangor, maine. williams disappeared two days ago after police say he killed a deputy, stole his car, and robbed a store. american airlines is facing a lawsuit after a 25-year-old died on a flight from hawaii.

brittany oswell suffered an embolism while flying from honolulu to dallas in 2016. her family says the plane's medical equipment didn't work, and the crew refused a doctor's request to make an emergency landing. oswell's relatives say the airline valued money over a sick passenger. >> someone made a business decision to keep flying the plane when she needed emergency medical help. >> the family says the plane was over los angeles when oswell got sick and could have landed in albuquerque. american released a statement saying in part we take the safety of our passengers very seriously. a new government study finds that the number of children diagnosed with autism is now on the rise. researchers say about 1 in 59 children are affected. that's up from the previous numbers of 1 in 68. one doctor says she's stunned by the speed of the increase. they believe the spike is partially due to improved awareness and better diagnosing of minority children. the study says white children

are diagnosed with autism more often than black or hispanic children. but that gap has closed dramatically lately. to sports now and a new class of nfl first round draft picks are getting ready for life in the pros. the heisman trophy-winning quarterback baker mayfield of oklahoma was the first pick going to the cleveland browns. mayfield, however, did not attend the draft. he was at home with his family. >> oh. all right then. let's go to the giants then who took saquon barkley, a running back from penn state. pretty excited response from the fans. then it was the jets' turn. they took quarterback sam darnold of usc. >> yeah, but maybe the most emotional moment of the night was when ryan shazier of the steelers walked onstage to announce his team's pick. shazier is recovering from a major spinal injury that he suffered last season. you can see it was a struggle for him to make it there and then the smile broke out as he made it to that podium. >> definitely, the biggest

shoulder and no backups. a good check of the golden gate bridge, southbound moving just find. the northbound side heading to sausalito, we have road work scheduled until 6:00 this morning. no delays on the northbound side. next update in just a couple minutes. >> now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> breaking news this morning from the korean peninsula, history being made. north korean leader kim jong-un and south korean president shook hands at the demilitarized zone and stepped back across the border to do it again. it's such a big deal. the koreas have often brought the world to the brink of nuclear war over the past 60 years. leaders from both countries are engaged in talks to denuclearize the korean peninsula. this morning the south korean president vowing there will be no war between the two countries.

we've learned the south korean president will travel to the north this fall. the meeting will lay the groundwork for kim's planned summit with president trump which could also come within weeks. this meeting very important that happened this morning. back to you. >> thank you so much, jessica. fire crews still on scene of a deadly fire in the south bay. >> matt keller live in san jose this morning. matt. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. some san jose firefighters are here making sure there are no flairups at this home. so much damage down to the structure. this was a major fire. two alarms were called to hermitage street in north san jose at 4:45 in the afternoon. when the second engine arrived at the scene, the smoke was so thick, they couldn't see the first engine that was already here. neighbors saw a man running out of the burning home screaming that his niece was still inside. >> the whole time we were all there, we never saw him come back out.

>> the 4-year-old girl was later found safe and with a family member. the man was found dead by flights after they searched the home. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you, matt. another two-alarm fire burned in san jose at almost the same time as the mobile home fire. this started in at that time tick of a day care center on burke hall lane. day care workers noticed the fire while everyone was out for recess. it took firefighters about an hour to put out the flames and nobody got hurt. >> 4:30, if you're joining us, let's get a quick update on weather and traffic where you live. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. >> you can see the cloud cover out there. not dropping anything in the form of drizzle or sprinkles. most of the day is going to be pretty dry. there is a slight chance of slight sprinkles this morning with these clouds.
