the northbound side. starting to see volume fill in. south of there we have an issue around tully road. vehicles blocking the slow lane and reports of chp that the vehicle is on fire. not sure how serious that is. they are rolling the fire department to the scene. we'll keep an eye on that. drive times coming up next at 5:10. developing news now, the man accused of being the golden state killer is scheduled to appear in court today. >> the 72-year-old is going to be arraigned on two counts of murder. authorities say the break in the case came when dna evidence from crime scenes matched genetic information from one of his relatives who used a genealogy website. deangelo is suspected of at least ten more murders and upwards of 50 rapes from 1976 to 1986. >> it is likely the suspected killer would still be on the run had it not been for a man that

hunted him every day for a decade. >> investigator paul hull says he was obsessed with the case. amy hollyfield live at the con contra costa d.a.'s office. >> reporter: this investigator spent nearly 20 years in this office working on this case. there are a few people who know this case as paul holes. he says this case took over his life. he said when he read the case files he knew this man needed to be caught. he says he is 100% sure joseph deangelo is the east area rapist and golden state killer. holes describes how he felt after he saw deangelo after the arrest. >> i absolutely needed to see him and to see him sit in an interview room utterly defeated, that was a very good feeling. >> so here is how he found him. they had dna, but it didn't

match any known criminals. holes went to a genealogy site called jed match and checked the lineage going back generations. he checked if anyone at any point had moved to california at the time of the crimes, joseph deangelo fit those boxes. last week investigators got his dna from some stuff he had thrown away and they had a match. holes doesn't work here anymore. he retired just almost a month before this arrest, but he's retired knowing he cracked the biggest case of his career ch live in martinez, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> what a story. thank you so much. one of deangelo's former co-workers says he's surprised by the allegations. investigators believe deangelo might be the visalia ransacker from the mid '70s. >> absolutely no indication that he had a problem, you know. kno.

>> deangelo's former co-worker also described him as being, quote, strange and said he didn't fit it in with exeter's closely it in group of officers. >> detectives found deangelo through familial dna. kate larsen spoke to a dna expert who said the public should think long and hard before completing an at-home dna testing kid. >> when you provide them with a sample, they have all your dna. >> the san francisco based defense attorney who specializes in dna cases. she says people should be cautious. 23andme and ancestry.com have become popular selling millions of dna >> the genealogy website led to his arrest. she sees parallels between

website, abc7news.com. download the news app to learn the latest developments. breaking news this morning, a historic summit halfway across the world this morning on the korean peninsula. look at this moment. north korean leader kim jong-un and south korean president moon jae-in shaking hands at the demilitarized zone and stepped back across the border and did it again. it's a very big deal. the koreans have often brought the world to the brink of nuclear war over the past 60 years. leaders of both countries are en dajed in talks to denuclearize the korean peninsula, and the meeting will lay the groundwork for kim's planned summit with president trump. in fact, our president has been tweeting about the meeting overnight. this morning he sent out several tweets. this is one of the latest ones saying korean war to end. the united states and all its great people should be very proud of what's now taking place in korea. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. attorneys for bill cosby

plan to appeal the jury's guilty verdict in his sexual assault retrial. he remains free for now but the judge ordered him to surrender his passport. he was found guilty on three counts of aggravated indecent assau assault. he screamed profanity at a prosecutor who asked the judge to revoke his bail. he will be sentenced within the next 90 days. the case involved a temple university employee who claims cosby drugged and molested her at his home in 2004. more help could be on the way for thousands of people who lost their homes in the north bay fires last fall. a state senate committee approved two measures to help underinsured fire victims. the future of the legislation could face an uphill battle. the insurance industry is fighting the two bills arguing there may be unintended consequences including triggering higher rates for all consumers. if approved, the measure would apply retroactively to those who filed claims in the october fires totaling about $10 billion

in insurance claims. this morning demolition crews will be back on the job in concord, taking down an unfinished apartment building that burned earlier this week. 250 residents of a nearby building are still evacuated and don't know when they will return. yet firefighters were still putting out hot spots in a blaze that cost about $55 million in damage. happening today, golden gate bridge officials are expected to choose the architectural design for the span's toll gan tri project. three designs are being considered for the new toll collection equipment. the district engineer and advisory committee chair has recommended scheme c which has an open truss structure. it would go up south of the current toll booths. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. temperatures in the low to mid 50s in the inland east bay neighborhoods. cooler in mount die ab blow at

a couple of chances of rain coming at us this weekend. they're very, very light. most of us don't receive any. those of us that do, less than .1 inch of rain. university of california taking tuition hikes off the agenda at next month's board of governors meeting. students are not in the clear yet. officials and students at the ten campus system will keep pushing for more funding until the budget is passed in june.

uc may consider a modest tuition increase for the 2018-2019 academic years. southwest airlines says bookings have been down since a fatal accident on one of the planes headed to dallas. it was the first passenger fatality in southwest's history and the first fatality on a u.s. airline in nine years. southwest attributes the drop in bookings to the decision to pull all advising since the accident. in today's gma first look, the family of a south carolina woman is suing american airlines. >> they claim the flight crew didn't take action that could have saved her life. here is abc news reporter david curly. >> reporter: in this morning's "first look," her husband's military assignment ending in hawaii, a photo the day before they headed home. three hours into the flight, brittany oz well was having trouble breathing and passed out. >> the flight should have been diverted and landed.

>> brittany regained consciousness but then worsened, a blood clot in her lungs leading to her death. the family is suing american airlines claiming that medical equipment, a defibrillator and blood pressure cuff did not work. more importantly they argue the jet, which passed over los angeles when she became ill, could have diverted to albuquerque, new mexico, rather than another 90 minutes in the air to dallas. the family says a doctor on board asked the crew three times to divert. and we'll tell you what flight attendants say is their responsibility in the air coming u at 7:00 a.m. with your gma "first look," david curly, abc news, washington. the white house confirms that president trump will visit london on july 13th. but london's mayor and several conservative groups are urging him to stay away from london because of the risk of major protests, crime and disorder they say. the mayor tweeted, if he comes to london, president trump will experience an open and diverse

the scene. keeping a close eye on that situation. in the meantime, the bay bridge commute is filling in. 5:25 is when the metering lights flipped on. we're friday light in most areas. developing news this morning chlgts the 72-year-old man suspected of being the golden state killer is scheduled that appear in court for the first time today. >> she's on suicide watch, scheduled to be arraigned on two counts of murder. suspect pd of at least ten more murders and 50 rapes from '76 to '86. investigators used a genealogy website from a relative. police searched his home and also the murder weapon as well as trinkets the golden state killer may have stolen from his victims. his sister still lives in the central valley community exeter where he was a police officer for a few years. a reporter from our abc

stories. more local news now. fire crews are on scene of a deadly fire in the south bay. abc's matt keller live in san jose. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. firefighters have swapped crews out here at the scene. you can see this home is destroyed. they also have tape up here so vehicles cannot go through and people are not supposed to be walking through here. what a horrible scene that happened yesterday. this was a major fire. two alarms called to hermitage street in north san jose at 4:45 in the afternoon. when the second engine arrived on scene, the smoke was so thick they couldn't see the first engine that was already here. neighbors saw a man running out of the burning home screaming that his niece was inside. >> the firefighter went in and the 23-year-old followed suit. the whole time we were there, we never saw him come back out. >> the 4-year-old girl was later found safe and with a family

member. the man was found dead by firefighters after they searched the home. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. live in san jose, matt keller, nbc news. another two-alarm fire burned in san jose at almost the same time. this started in at that time tick of a day care sker. day care workers noticed the fire while everyone was out for recess. 15 children and seven adults were moved to a nearby parking lot. it took firefighters about an hour to put out the flames. nobody got hurt. now to international news making history. the korean peninsula overnight we saw leaders vowing to get rid of nuclear weapons. look here at this stunning moment where north korean leader kim jong-un and south korean president moon jay in shook hands at the demilitarized zone. they stepped back, did it again. leaders from both countries right now are engaged in talks

to denuclearize the korean peninsula. concrete plans not laid out quite yet. the entire world is watching. the koreas have nearly brought the world to nuclear war over the past 60 years. korean leaders have agreed to hold reunions of war-separated families. this meeting overnight with lay the groundwork for kim's summit with president trump which could come in just a few vehicles. the president has been tweeting this morning, praising this handshake. back to you. a big shakeup this morning at one of the silicon valley's biggest charitable foundations. ceo emmett carson of the silicon valley community foundation has been placed on paid administrative leave after allegations that he permitted a toktsic work culture. his second in command resigned following sexual harassment claims. a woman who quit the foundation three years ago after saying she was bullied believes carson should step down. >> as ceo, he was responsible for setting the tone and the

pace of everything, and that environment ended up becoming incredibly toxic. >> charitable gifts have come from big names like facebook's mark zuckerberg. the foundation awarded $1.3 billion to non-profit organizations last year. former nbc news anchor tom brokaw is denying a sexual misconduct claim. former nbc news excess spon dent and fox news anchor linda vester said bro kau twice tried to forcibly kiss her and made inappropriate overtures attempting to have an affair. in a statement the 78-year-old said he met her twice to give her career advice and made no romantic overtures. pg&e facing a nearly $100 million fine. this is the latest fallout from the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion. the puc says pg&e engaged in improper communications. they were previously fined $1.6

the sunshine comes out. hit the low 60s around 4:00 to 53 at about 8:00. here is a qic look. i tweaked the chances of rain for the weekend. we don't have much today. we have a 30% coverage saturday and sunday. give you an hour by hour look at that so you can take a look at when it may get to your neighborhood. so far this morning, we had an issue in the kald dot. that's not good, even on the reverse commute sfwl yes, on the eastbound side. someone probably going a little too fast and flipped over inside the tunnel. that's where our sig alert is this morning. fortunate it is on the lighter side of traffic this time of day. they did just open up one lane in bore number one. we had bore one fully closed. now you're able to use one lane to get by. the other bore is still open, westbound side is not impacted. i'm not seeing any delays yet. it's early enough and on the countercommute side, hopefully they can get this cleared before it turns into a significant
