live where you live, this is abc 7 news. accused golden state killer on suicide watch today preparing for his first court appearance. this as we learn new information on the double murder nearly 40 years ago that led authorities to the suspect. thanks for joining us. we are learning dna from the murder scene in southern california of a husband and wife pointed the way that eventually led to joseph jason deangelo. the hearing begins shortly in sacramento, and jessica castro from abc mornings that has the charges and the investigation. jessica? >> reporter: that much anticipated court appearance happens in two and a half hours. at 1:30 this afternoon, in fact, in sacramento. it will be his first public appearance since being arrested

as the suspected golden state killer, and the 72-year-old arraigned on two counts of murder in sacramento, held without bond, and he's on suicide watch. new at this hour, we've been able to learn more about the tedious work that went into capturing him. they learned the task force looking for the golden state's killer had his dna sample from a murder in ventura in 1980. they were killed in their home in ventura, and their daughter now lives in santa cruz. prosecutors say that ventura county dna sample tracked down deangelo partially matching dna that a relative gave to a genealogy website and worked backwards using relative dna to find the suspect who was the right age, gender, and lived in the area, and eventually, they staked out his place and have current dna evidence from him, himself, linking him to the

murders and link the golden state killer to at least 12 murders and 50 rapes. authorities have promised to bling even more charges against him in the coming days. jessica, thank you. for the first time, the dna data base used to help identify the golden state killer is responding to the arrest of the suspected killer. they have a new statement on its website, says, in part, it is important that ged match participants understand the possible uses of their dna including identification of relatives that have committed crimes or were victims of crimes. that's a tiny dna analysis firm speaking for the first time today. now, if you'd like to learn more about the golden state killer, we have many resources on our website, we posted stories on abc 7 news the reporters did in the 1970s during the scary time he was terrorizing quiet bay area communities. go to our website and news app to watch the full stories.

new at 11:00, the house intelligence committee released a report this morning on russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. the gop led committee already released key findings saying there was no coordination between the trump administration and russia. the committee democrats say not enough witnesses were interviewed and not enough evidence gathered. a federal judge threw out a federal lawsuit brought by president trump's former campaign chair. he sought to challenge the authority of special counsel robert mueller, and he's pled not guilty after a federal grand jury indicted him for conspiracy against the u.s. kim jong un returned to north korea after the historic meeting with the south korean president. the two leaders shook hands this morning, and they agreed to denuclearize the peninsula, and later this year, formally end the war that's divided the two nations since the 1950s. he told moon, quote, i won't

interrupt your sleep anymore with early morning missile tests. world leaders are praising the deal, but some analysts say don't be too optimistic. >> it's hard to persuade anyone with a written document when you are dealing with north korea and the nuclear issue. there needs to be action. >> the meeting was considered groundwork for president trump's pending summit with kim jung un, a time and location still being worked out. crews try to finish repairing damaged power lines after a jeep crashed into a power pole last night. matt keller is live in with the latest, matt? >> reporter: people are stopping and turning around. pge is working hard at the scene with the poles up, working on getting the lines reconnected, but what a mess last night causing a lot of work for the crews. take a look at this picture. this is from a neighbor. you see what appears to be a jeep suv that crashed on san

jose road after 6:00 last night. the company said a total of three power poles were damaged, and the neighbor said the driver walk walked away, though. both lanes in the santa cruz mountains were blocked by the damage left behind from the crash. as a result, a detour was set up for people heading north and south. the market sits at the detour off so-cal san jose road. >> a lot of frustration and people trying to go down the road and having to turn back and not making it. >> reporter: pge says 4643 customers lost power, and all by 16 were restored last night. there is a possibility this road could be open at least for one lane in the near future, but pge crews are hard at work right now. reporting live in the santa cruz mountains, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> take a look at san jose fire investigators looking into what sparked a large two-alarm fire.

we flew over the scene yesterday afternoon. when the engines arrived at the scene, the smoke so thick they couldn't see an engine already there. neighbors saw a man running from the burning home screaming his niece was still inside. >> the firefighter went in and then the 23-year-old followed suit, and the whole time we were all there, we never saw him come back out. >> reporter: the 4-year-old girl was later found safe with the family member. firefighters found the man's body after a searching the home. pge faces $100 million in fines. the latest fallout from the pipeline explosion that killed eight people. the public utilities commission says pge engaged in improper back channel communications. ironically, with pu itself, and they previously fined them $1.6 billion for the explosion, and

they will not pass that cost of the fines on to customers. today is arbor day. san jose mayor planted a tree in kelly park this morning, and arbor day celebrates the role of trees in our life. it was first observed as a formal holiday in 1872 in nebraska. don't worry, on monday, if the towers of the golden gate - bridge, engineers are scheduled to inspect bridges' towers monday morning, strapped into ropes and pulleys. sky7 shows the scaffolding already in place ahead of monday's work to protect pedestrians. the district is looking at every rivet and seam to learn what needs to be done to keep the bridge strong. cyclists are asked to walk bikes around the towers. it's official. abba is back. the new songs that the swedish pop group is releasing after 35 years. dozens of people line up outside a bakery in berkley. the reason behind the rush for
