>> i'm kristen sze. the courtroom was packed with media and family members of deangelo's alleged victims. >> deangelo's attorney is complaining of problems with the case. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas reports from sacramento. >> is joseph james deangelo your true and correct legal name? >> yes. >> i'm sorry? >> yeah. >> yes. >> deangelo answered yes from his wheelchair in a weak voice almost kbb to hear. in court today a public defender was appointed to represent him. diane howard said the sheriffs department initially made it difficult to see her cltd even though she had a court order. >> he disrd rayed the court order. >> howard says there are thousands of pages of evidence to wade through and it could take months before they're ready for trial. deangelo is officially charged with two counts of murdering brian and katy in rancho cordova while walking their dog in 1978. he is suspected of ten more murders as the golden state killer and 50 rapes as the east

area rapist. it expand a decade and went unsolved 40 years. dine hill of rancho kor dova and daughter kelly came to the courthouse in hopes of getting a look at the suspect. >> he is a horrific man and needed to be caught. we didn't ever imagine that we would see this happen. >> but attorney howard is asking people not to rush to judgmen. >> we have the law that suggests that he is innocent. until they prove him guilty. >> joseph deangelo is scheduled to be back in court on may 14th. it's not known if he will enter a plea at that time. in sacramento, eric thomas, abc 7 news. now, new information we're just learning that investigators first misidentified an oregon man as a possible golden state killer suspect. through information from again etic websites. that's according to court records obtained by the associated press. in march of 2017 investigators in oregon convinced a judge to order a 73-year-old man to prove -- provide a dna sample.

they cited a rare again editic marker which the oregon man shared with the killer to get the judge to issue that order. >> the arrest of joseph deangelo is presenting new opportunities and new concerns for genology cites. and the people subscribing to them. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: for years investigators relied on criminal labs like in alameda county along with national law enforcement databases to run dna samples against when searching for suspects. now some investigators are turning to genology websites like ged match, the d.g.e. dechl machel database was had they said identified golden state killer joseph deangelo. when you register the following statements come up. although not approached by law enforcement it has always been g.e.d. match's policy to inform users the database could be used for other uses and it's important that g.e.d. match participants understand the possible uses of dna including

identification of relatives that have committed crimes or were victims of crimes. the alameda county sheriff's office crime lab is not involved in the golden state killer case but supervising dna criminalist rhonda roby described how the dna can be used to trace a suspect when the investigators don't know the suspect. >> we generate a dna profile from the evidence. >> in deangelo's case investigators turned to the genology websites and worked off family members with similar dna focusing on the right age, sex and right location. ultimately honing in on deangelo. roby says a biological parent would present a 50% match. >> if i have a sibling i'm sharing approximately 25% of my dna with the sibling. you go on to a cousin. you're going to share less dna but share a large percentage of it. >> ged match is telling customers if they're concerned about non-genelogical uses of dna she should remove dna

aid off of a wound that never quite healed. >> governor brown can either approve parole or reverse the decision. the family is asking the community to write letters urging him to reverse that decision. a young san jose woman rushed into a burning apartment building this morning to help an elderly woman escape the flames. the fire breck out around 8:30 this morning on topeka ave. firefighters say the flames were shooting out of the ground floor window upstairs united. both women were taken to the hospital. and this afternoon in san jose firefighters rescued six dogs in a fire on skotdy street. two dogs were resuscitated at the scene. another was taken to an animal hospital for treatment. the flames were put out quickly and all of the dogs are okay. but the home was severely damaged is now unhabitable. the red cross was called in to assist the family. the u.s. tennis association

has slapped a stiff penalty on the burlingame country club after investigating racism. abc 7 news reporter jonathon bloom found out the players quietly complained for years. >> you know something is wrong. >> and for alyssa that moment came during a tennis tournament at the club in hills bureau. she played there for too long. >> i experienced it as code for homephobiay. >> but this time she said a spectacular was korched. >> the man from jamaica asked where the bedroom was and told to go to the clubhouse. >> once there a staff member confronted him. >> said to him you need to leave. and he said i'm not doing anything here. and he said your kind does not belong here. >> then the club called hills bureau police who sent three officers to the parking lot.

male bohemian club are out on the picket line the sec day of work stoppage. the union says pay and union busting attempts by the management are at the core. an attorney representing the club says the union has been inflexible. he says workers have yet to make a specific proposal that would help move negotiations along. we now know that 25,000 union workers in u.c. system are walking off the job three days starting may 7ing. union says the walkout will affect 10 campusing with several clinics and research labs. the union claims it reached a impasse in contract negotiations after a year of bargaining. a state lawmakers today shelved a bill that would have banned children under the age of 12 from playing tackle football. sacramento assemblyman kevin o o mccarrot pulled the safe football act following criticism from the youth football community on petition drive against the bill collected

45,000 signatures. mccarrot and loerna gonzalez fletcher co-authored the bill to protect kids from concussions and brain injury. pop warner football officials say 100,000 kids play tackle football in california. walnut creek police are drawing attention to three car burglaries suspects who they're calling unfortunate criminals. donal irvin, jonathon pool and marcus comens are accuse ds of auto burglary and conspiracy. police call them unfortunate because the car they are accused of breaking into was that of a walnut creek officer. and the purse they stole had a gps tracker in it. officers arrested the trio minutes after the break in on wednesday. talking warriors klay thompson up for practice but all eyes on steph curry. >> and whether he will play against new orleans tomorrow. it may depend on how you define

the los angeles times reports that the epa is circulating a draft proposal that would freeze the strict mileage targets the obama administration worked out with california. that plan called for increasing the average fuel economy for passenger cars appear suvs to 55 mile per gallon by 2025. the formal proposal is expected in the coming weeks. if you are planning a trip to mirror woods do it soon. the entrance fee going up by 50%. aerktd to the media partner, the price to visit will climb to $15 per person come january 1st. and annual pass will increase from $40 to $45. you also have to pay that new $8 parking fee. the fee increase is part of a plan by the national park service to increase fees at all parks across the nation. today's asher day, san jose mayor sam liccardo planted a tree in kelly park this morning. asher day celebrates the roll of trees in our lives and promotes tree planning and care.

first observe as a formal holiday inn 1872 in nebraska. a gap between two of the east by's most heavily used bike and pedestrian pathways has been filled in. drone view 7 flew over the link between the richmond and other greenways. after years of planning and construction it opened to the public today. a new intersection went in allowing people to cross busy san pablo avenue safely. the pathway will allow people on footed and bike to travel from berkeley to point richmond on the greenways uninterrupted and unfettered. the warriors are definitely running the clock. both steph curry and head coach steve kerr say it's another day before a decision on whether he plays into foam's game one of the second round of of the playoffs. abc 7 news laura anthony and ied the practice. >> i'm getting there for sure. >> he is close but is he close enough? while steph curry

"7 on your side" michael finney has advice how to hire a good one plus ratings for plumbers throughout the bay area. those stories coming up at 6:00. finally tonight if you are excited about the avengers movie you'll love the exhibit at san francisco's cartoon art museum irps inned by the new film. >> you will. a top costumer and prop grader gives you a sneak peek. >> we took all the heroes from the new avengers infinity war movie and made preproductions of the pops and costumes. this is the infinity glove. did this with 3-d printing created 26 files for each part of the glove then put electronics in it to light up the jewels. it's identical to what's used in the film. you may have seen this for about 30 seconds in iron man ii, all made by hand.

over 300 parts in just the torso. a lot of people think it's steel. no. it's only made to look like that. if this was aultd metal it would literally weigh a ton. in the actual film, the costume was done in cgi. had to create a costume literally from scratch that would work in the real world. so i began with a sublimbation prin and created all the urethane pieces to put on that looked like metal. there is not one like this anywhere. people want to see the heroes. they want to see what they saw on the screen so that's what we bring. o. >> stunning stuff. how cool that. the cartoon art museum will add more costumes and props over the summer cool. >> that's right and the display thereby willie will be there until labor day. especially stunning in the films it's cgi they are puts going to
