how is that chp officer doing? >> right now, he is alert and conscious and was transported and is going to be checked out. he obviously had road rash from the collision. we are hoping that he will be all right. >> reporter: take us back to initially what started this is this. >> that motorcycle officer made a stop. and he contacted the driver and through talking to the driver, for some reason, the driver decided to leave the scene. as the driver was fleeing the scene, managed to drag the officer down the roadway. driving him about a good 750-1000 feet. and coming to arrest on the right shoulder where you can see the vehicle. that officer was able to get up on his feet and then we had other officers there immediately detained the driver and several passengers in the vehicle and

the driver is now in custody. >> reporter: what do we know about this driver? >> female. we don't know a whole lot right now as far as why she did what she did and hoping to find that out. >> reporter: any other people injured in the other vehicles. >> everybody was able to talk to us. >> reporter: you got a lot of officers out here taking evidence, how long do you think you are going to have these lanes shut down? >> at least several hours from now. two far right lanes shut down while we diagram the scene. picking up evidence on the roadway. once it is done, we hope to have a complete opening up the lanes. >> reporter: thank you. a live look of officers processing the scene. that is the female driver's

him into a courtroom. he looked frail and elderly and spoke in a small voice that we all strained to hear. he is officially charged with two counts of murdering a sacramento couple in 1978. and suspected of ten more murders and 50 rapes. the crimes spanned hopes in getting a look at the suspect. >> he is an horrific man and needed to be caught. >> not that we believed that we were in danger, you know at all times, but it felt like people could finally put that to rest. >> reporter: de angelo is represented by attorney diane h howard with the county public

defender's office. >> we have the law that suggests that he is innocent until proven guilty. i feel he is already tried in the press here. >> reporter: eric thomas, abc7 news. >> investigators used information from genetic websites a year ago and misidentified an elderly oregon man. that man shares a rare genetic marker with the killer. but officials say they have now arrested the right man. dna led to his arrest and new concerns for genealogical sites and the people who subscribe to them. melanie woodrow explains.
