cosby trial reveals what sealed cosby's fate. a surfer breaks the world record. see how high he got scaling this massive wave. and for the birds. a college graduation ceremony comes under attack from pesky pelicans. good monday morning to you all. we begin with the caravan at the border. nearly 200 men, women and children are hoping to step foot on u.s. soil. >> the migrants are seeking asylum after fleeing central america even as president trump called on immigration officials to block their entry. at this hour they remain in limbo stuck at the country's busiest border crossing. abc's elizabeth hur is here with the very latest following the developments overnight. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: kendis and diane, good morning to you. yes, those migrants who made the journey say they are excited and nervous. nervous because all they can do now is wait with officials telling them there's no room.

a showdown at the border. marking the end of a month-long journey for these migrants from honduras, el salvador and guatemala reaching the u.s./mexico border sunday and now prepared to do whatever it takes to seek asylum in the u.s., some families even risking separation. >> we're fighting to, you know, for a better future. >> reporter: the group says they are fleeing turmoil back home including gang violence, lgbt persecution and other dangers. traveling through mexico to the san diego border, our country's busiest crossing. their arrival greeted by both supporters and protesters. >> if they really wanted asylum they would have claimed asylum in mexico. >> reporter: president trump also calling this caravan a threat to the u.s. >> are you watching that mess that's going on right now with the caravan coming up? our laws are so weak. >> reporter: tweeting he has instructed the secretary of homeland security to keep these

large caravans of people out of our country but american lawyers now on site offering free advice to these migrants are maintaining for so many returning home is not an option. >> what lays ahead is still less terrifying than what is behind them and what they have fled. >> reporter: well, at last check again according to u.s. authorities that busy crossing is already full and at capacity so for now they cannot take in any more asylum seekers. the migrants say it's okay, they'll wait at that border however long that may take. kendis and diane. >> all right, elizabeth hur live for us in studio, thanks, elizabeth. now we'll turn to the fallout over the annual white house correspondents' dinner. >> the comedian who unleashed on president trump and two of his top aides is facing growing criticism this morning accused of going too far in her personal attacks. and now the group that organizes the dinner has released a statement adding to the debate. this morning the annual black-tie celebration of the first amendment under fire.

>> trump is president, it's not ideal. >> reporter: most of the backlash from the white house correspondents' dinner aimed at michelle wolf, the comedian accused of crossing the line with personal shots at the president's team including the press secretary sarah sanders. >> i actually really like sarah. i think she's very resourceful like she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye. like maybe she's born with it. maybe it's lies. it's probably lies. >> reporter: wolf also roasted kellyanne conway. >> you guys got to stop putting kellyanne on your shows. all she does is lie. if you don't give her a platform, she has nowhere to lie. it's like that old saying, if a tree falls in the woods, how do we get kellyanne under that tree? i'm not suggesting she gets hurt, just stuck. stuck under a tree. >> reporter: this morning the

white house correspondents' association responded to the criticism saying wolf's rant doesn't reflect the group's effort. in a statement the association president says the event was meant to offer a unifying message about our common commitment to a vigorous and free press, not to divide people. unfortunately, the entertainer's monologue was not in the spirit of that mission. president trump also blasted wolf sunday night tweeting, the white house correspondents' dinner was a failure last year but this year was an embarrassment to everyone associated with it. the filthy comedian totally bombed, put the dinner to rest. start over. >> hello, michigan. hello, michigan. >> reporter: the president skipped the dinner for a second consecutive year, instead, he held a rally in michigan. >> by the way, is this better than that phony washington white house correspondents' dinner? is this more fun? >> reporter: former communications director anthony scaramucci says sanders is owed an apology. >> what happened was an atrocity.

>> reporter: and the former white house press secretary sean spicer called the event a disgrace to which wolf replied, thank you. wolf also said on twitter the jokes were not about sanders' appearance, only her despicable behavior in her words. many comedians are coming to wolf's defense including jimmy kimmel and kathy griffin. dr. ronny jackson will not be returning to the white house as the president's chief physician. he was replaced when he was nominated to be head of the veterans affairs department. now, jackson withdrew his nomination amid allegations of poor management at the white house medical unit. the website politico was first to report jackson will return to the unit but not as the chief doctor. turning our focus overseas and south korea's military says it will remove the loud speakers it used to blast propaganda into north korea for decades. it's the first concrete action following this weekend's historic summit. at that meeting the north korean leader kim jong-un promised to invite outsiders to watch as his country's nuclear test site is shut down.

speaking on abc's "this week," the secretary of state mike pompeo new on the job saying when it comes to whether to trust north korea's promises, the trump administration has its eyes wide open. >> we know the history. we're not going to take promises. we're not going to take words. we're going to look for actions and deeds. president trump has put economic pressure on the north koreans, and it appears to have given us this opening, this real opportunity for something that would be transformative for the world if we can achieve it. >> pompeo wrapped up his first overseas trip this morning in jordan. during previous stops in israel and saudi arabia, he called out iran claiming it was destabilizing the entire middle east. pompeo also said president trump will likely pull the u.s. out of the iran nuclear deal unless it's renegotiated. also from the middle east syria is reporting deadly overnight missile strikes. video shows a massive explosion which activists say killed more than two dozen mostly iranian fighters who backed the syrian regime.

the group says the attack app r appears to have been carried out by israel but that's not confirmed. strong winds and high temperatures fueling fast-moving wildfires in northern arizona. as many as 1,000 homes are threatened and some buildings have already been destroyed. evacuations have been ordered for several communities. about 8,000 acres have already burned so far. time now for a look at your weather on this monday morning. severe storms in western texas and new mexico pelted the region with large hail and winds up to 60 miles per hour. trees were stripped of their leaves but there are no reports of damage to buildings or any injuries. looking at today's temperatures the high in albuquerque will be 78 degrees. dallas, new orleans and miami will all reach 83. the high in minneapolis will also be 78. actually warmer than in los angeles. looking at the pacific northwest and the northeast we'll be

t-mobile and sprint have reached an agreement on a $26 billion merger. they say a merger would allow the companies to stay competitive with at&t and verizon while delivering faster 5g service and more jobs. but some analysts say it will mean higher prices in the long term with less competition and they warn many support jobs will be lost. the fate of the deal is now up to federal regulators who rejected a similar merger four years ago. gas prices are once again on the rise. aaa says drivers in nine states are now paying over $3 a gallon on average. prices at their highest level in more than three years because of the cost of oil and the looming summer driving season. striking teachers in arizona are forcing many schools across that state to close for a third day today. educators wearing red shirts will hold a red for ed rally at the capitol. joining them will be the president of a major teachers union, the arizona teachers and those in colorado are demanding more pay and school funding.

with them. >> reporter: for weeks there was speculation about the outcome but this morning we hear just what was going on inside the deliberation room during his retrial thanks to juror number 1, harrison snyder. when you entered the room for the first time, were you sure he was guilty? >> no. >> reporter: he says prior to the trial he didn't know much about cosby. >> i never watched "the cosby show" or anything, i'm a little too young for that. >> reporter: at his first trial last spring the jury deliberated for more than 52 hours but was unable to come to a unanimous decision on whether or not cosby drugged and sexually assaulted former temple university employee andrea constand. that was at his pennsylvania home in 2004. snyder describes the jury as being all on the same page when it came to arriving at that unanimous guilty verdict on all three counts. >> some have said i made the right decision and some people have said that they still think that he's innocent. and i just tell them, if you

were there, you would say the same thing. you would say that he's guilty. >> sitting here today, is there any doubt in your mind that you guys came to the right conclusion? >> no, i have no doubt at all. >> reporter: linsey davis, abc news. >> cosby faces up to 30 years in prison when he's sentenced this summer. his defense plans an appeal and you can look for more of that abc news exclusive on "gma" this morning. the suspected golden state serial killer is under suicide watch this morning as we learn more about his capture. police arrested 72-year-old joseph deangelo after entering old crime scene dna into the genealogy site ged match. authorities then traced him through his family tree. critics say the dna information was misused but a detective who worked the case say police used all tools available to them. >> so what do you say to those critics who argue this is an invasion of privacy? what you did in this case. >> what it is is acting as a witness just like when i go up

and knock on a door and say, hey, did you see somebody who looked like that. and he said, yeah, i saw him running down the street that way, that dna is doing the same thing. but i just don't have to talk to that person. >> in response, ged match said that it's important that customers understand the possible uses of their dna including the identification of relatives that have committed or were victims of crimes. a minnesota grandmother accused of killing her husband and another woman has been extradited to florida where a judge ordered her held without bail. police in texas released this surveillance video of lois riess as she was arrested at a restaurant earlier this month. riess was at the center of a nationwide manhunt and allegedly killed the woman to steal her identity. the man hailed as a hero for helping to save people during the waffle house shooting in nashville scored a double win on sunday. james shaw was honored by the nashville predators before and during the playoff game against winnipeg. nashville then ended up winning in double overtime.
