a showdown at the border. marking the end of a month-long journey for these migrants from honduras, el salvador and guatemala reaching the u.s./mexico border sunday and now prepared to do whatever it takes to seek asylum in the u.s., some families even risking separation. >> we're fighting to, you know, for a better future. >> reporter: the group says they are fleeing turmoil back home including gang violence, lgbt persecution and other dangers. traveling through mexico to the san diego border, our country's busiest crossing. their arrival greeted by both supporters and protesters. >> if they really wanted asylum they would have claimed asylum in mexico. >> reporter: president trump also calling this caravan a threat to the u.s. >> are you watching that mess that's going on right now with the caravan coming up? our laws are so weak. >> reporter: tweeting he has instructed the secretary of homeland security to keep these

large caravans of people out of our country but american lawyers now on site offering free advice to these migrants are maintaining for so many returning home is not an option. >> what lays ahead is still less terrifying than what is behind them and what they have fled. >> reporter: well, at last check again according to u.s. authorities that busy crossing is already full and at capacity so for now they cannot take in any more asylum seekers. the migrants say it's okay, they'll wait at that border however long that may take. kendis and diane. >> all right, elizabeth hur live for us in studio, thanks, elizabeth. now we'll turn to the fallout over the annual white house correspondents' dinner. >> the comedian who unleashed on president trump and two of his top aides is facing growing criticism this morning accused of going too far in her personal attacks. and now the group that organizes the dinner has released a statement adding to the debate. this morning the annual black-tie celebration of the first amendment under fire.

white house correspondents' association responded to the criticism saying wolf's rant doesn't reflect the group's effort. in a statement the association president says the event was meant to offer a unifying message about our common commitment to a vigorous and free press, not to divide people. unfortunately, the entertainer's monologue was not in the spirit of that mission. president trump also blasted wolf sunday night tweeting, the white house correspondents' dinner was a failure last year but this year was an embarrassment to everyone associated with it. the filthy comedian totally bombed, put the dinner to rest. start over. >> hello, michigan. hello, michigan. >> reporter: the president skipped the dinner for a second consecutive year, instead, he held a rally in michigan. >> by the way, is this better than that phony washington white house correspondents' dinner? is this more fun? >> reporter: former communications director anthony scaramucci says sanders is owed an apology. >> what happened was an atrocity.

>> reporter: and the former white house press secretary sean spicer called the event a disgrace to which wolf replied, thank you. wolf also said on twitter the jokes were not about sanders' appearance, only her despicable behavior in her words. many comedians are coming to wolf's defense including jimmy kimmel and kathy griffin. dr. ronny jackson will not be returning to the white house as the president's chief physician. he was replaced when he was nominated to be head of the veterans affairs department. now, jackson withdrew his nomination amid allegations of poor management at the white house medical unit. the website politico was first to report jackson will return to the unit but not as the chief doctor. turning our focus overseas and south korea's military says it will remove the loud speakers it used to blast propaganda into north korea for decades. it's the first concrete action following this weekend's historic summit. at that meeting the north korean leader kim jong-un promised to invite outsiders to watch as his country's nuclear test site is shut down.

speaking on abc's "this week," the secretary of state mike pompeo new on the job saying when it comes to whether to trust north korea's promises, the trump administration has its eyes wide open. >> we know the history. we're not going to take promises. we're not going to take words. we're going to look for actions and deeds. president trump has put economic pressure on the north koreans, and it appears to have given us this opening, this real opportunity for something that would be transformative for the world if we can achieve it. >> pompeo wrapped up his first overseas trip this morning in jordan. during previous stops in israel and saudi arabia, he called out iran claiming it was destabilizing the entire middle east. pompeo also said president trump will likely pull the u.s. out of the iran nuclear deal unless it's renegotiated. also from the middle east syria is reporting deadly overnight missile strikes. video shows a massive explosion which activists say killed more than two dozen mostly iranian fighters who backed the syrian regime.
