live where you live, this is abc 7 news. workers are performing a high wire act of sorts on the golden gate bridge right now. crews are beginning an important safety inspection on the span that could last several weeks. the bridge district told people not to be alarmed seeing workers dangling from ropes off the bridge's towers. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the golden gate with more on the projects and how drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians could be affected. >> reporter: it is something to see. bridge employees are not trained

for this. this is specialized work. there's 12 men, six on each tower to do the work. this is the first them they've done this, but it will not be the last. you might have to do a double take. it is hard to believe your eyes. yes, that is a man dangling from the bridge. officials asked that you please not linger. >> this is an interesting sight. it's not one that you see every day. we encourage you to go ahead, take a look, but keep moving. you don't want to be the cause of traffic congestion. >> reporter: it's hard not to stare. this is a historical moment. for the first time, there's a team inspecting every seam and rivet of the powtowers. men are strapped into ropes and pulleys and repelling down the tower. >> we are looking for rust and thinning seal, and we are able to really make sure what shape those towers are in. >> reporter: they inspected the bridge before from afar with binoculars. this was motivated by new federal regulations requiring areas known as fracture critical

be inspected at arm's length. >> the towers are not fracture critical. they are not covered under the legislation, but we decided to add it to the scope. it is really meticulous work that people are trained carefully in. it takes a little bit of courage. >> reporter: a live look at the courageous work going on. officials will use the information that they gather while nay are up there to decide where they need their painters and their iron workers to focus after they come down from there. they say they plan to do this inspection probably every two years. reporting live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. ruben foster left the courthouse this morning after the first appearance on a domestic violence charge. prosecutors asked for a delay, this after the linebacker's

former girlfriend recanted her claim that foster had injured her. abc 7 news reporter matt keller are live in san jose, matt? >> reporter: well, prosecutors formally dismissed a misdemeanor charge against reuben foster for ammunition in his home, but big news this morning here from the courtroom is that the district attorney's office now has new evidence in their hands. today was supposed to be a hearing for foster, but instead of entering a plea, the linebacker heard from prosecutoring something that could change the course of the case. >> the people ask for additional time to investigate newly discovered information that bears on this case ending with a just result. >> they are continuing to review the videotape provided to them, and i am willing to abide by that to put this manner over to

may 8th or 9. >> reporter: that was provided by the alleged victim's attorney. she did not talk to the media today, but in a at the same time last week she said foster's former girlfriend initially lied about the incident and suffered injuries as a result of a fight with another woman. they said foster's girlfriend was upset and said if he broke up with her, she'd, quote, trash his career. prosecutors explained why an alleged victim changing her story is not necessarily a deal breaker for domestic violence cases. >> sadly, too often, victims of domestic violence, for a host of reasons, choose not to cooperate with the process that holds their abuser accountable. notwithstanding that, if the evidence independent of a victim in a domestic violence case is compelling, it's the prosecution's duty to seek justice. >> reporter: the hearing is

scheduled for may 8th. the team stated they'll wait until the case ends before deciding anything on foster. abc 7 news, matt keller. >> thank you. a key member of the raiders is being eveinvestigated for a domestic violence case. the los angeles police are investigating an alleged incident involving the defensive tackle saying penn slapped his wife's buttocks and then allegedly poured a drink on her head and pulled her wrist. the retired investigator who spent decades searching for the golden gate killer says the suspect is putting on an act. he appeared in court friday, handcuffed to a wheelchair. as the judge read the charges and details of the crimes, but this morning, an investigator told "good morning america" he's not buying it.

>> he's a dangerous man. he's not the individual in arraignment. it's a spry 72-year-old physically capable. >> he said a week before he was arrested, he was seen riding a motorcycle at high speeds. the daughter of two people killed by the golden state killer does not want him to face capital punishment. they believe joseph murdersed jennifer carroll's father and stepmother in ventura county in 1980. if convicted, she said he should live. >> absolutely do not want the death penalty. it's a private room on a wing in san quinten. the man should not be allowed to rest and feel he's safe, but i want him unsafe as possible and worry about every other inmate who actually found these women. >> they did not enter a plea friday and due in court may 14th. police are investigating a homicide in a quiet residential

community. a man found yesterday with a gunshot wound on garfield avenues. neighbors did not hear any gunshots, and the victim was foun found on a bench under the bart tracks on a busy bike path where children play. they have not identified him yet. this is the third murder in 15 years in albany. more than 100 migrants, mostly women and children seeking asylum in the u.s. woke up on the other side of the border crossing today. the people in the caravan from central america have been told there's no room right now at that port of entry. >> reporter: a human rights struggle playing out on america's southern border. after more than a month on the road, so-called migrant caravan arrived at the crossing. >> we're fighting to, you know, for a better future.

>> reporter: the group of 150 trying to seek asylum legally remain stuck on the other side a small group camped at the terminal, and others are nearby. they have been following the procedure for years, but this time, they were told their entry is blocked. u.s. customs and boardrder protection turned them away because it was already at capacity. >> we can build a base in iraq in under a week, we can't process 200 refugees, i don't believe it. >> reporter: the migrants, women and children, are from honduras and guatemala, traveling through mexico by train or bus or on foot and are fleeing violence and persecution, but others question the need for asylum. >> if they wanted it, they would have claimed it in mexico. >> reporter: president trump called the group a threat to border security. >> if we have no border security, we have to close down the country because we need

bring guns or knives. the annual nra meeting comes two months after the deadly school shooting in parkland, florida, reigniting a national debate about gun laws in the u.s. a member of the jury that clint convicted cosby last week speaks publicly in an interview with abc news. he said he's convinced the jury made the right decision saying he did not know much about bill cosby, the allegations, or the me too movement. cosby was charged with drugging and sexual assaulting a woman at his home in 2004. snider says it was not an open and shut case, butcosby's own words convinced him of his guilt. >> i think it was his deposit n deposition, really, mr. cosby admitted to giving these quaaludes to young women in order to have sex with them. >> cosby is set to be sentenced within 90 days. he faces up to 30 years in prison. he's 80 years old.
