good good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." the u.s. started processing the first immigrants camped on the border, but 11 have been charged for illegally entering the u.s. porn star stormy daniels is suing the president for defamation. daniels says the president disparaged her in a tweet mocking her after a sketch of a man she says threatened her to keep quiet. it's getting painful at the pump, and expect things to get worse. analysts say we could be looking at the highest summer gas prices in four years, up 40 cents from last year. people are marking mayday, an internationally recognized day to celebrate laborers and

the working class. it is mayday. it's may 1st. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> our top story this half hour is that breaking news that some caravan migrants are now being processed. >> the group has been waiting at the border crossing for more than a day. organizers say the eight people being processed include three mothers, four children and a 18-year-old male. >> but the justice department is also accusing 11 other migrants of entering illegally and one has already been deported. maggie rulli has more. >> reporter: the standoff at the mexican border continues. more than 150 migrants from central america are camped out across the border from san diego asking for asylum. she left her country five years

ago, says her family of nine including her daughter in a wheelchair have been pursued by ms 13. she says if she goes back to el salvador, her family will be killed. her family is one of those in the so-called caravan, mostly women and children who made the 2,000 mile trek from southern mexico on buses, trains and on foot. when they finally arrived, customs and border patrol said that the crossing was already at capacity, warning them to get comfortable for a long wait. as they sit and wait, vice president mike pence in calexico, checking out progress on a barrier being built on the southern border. southern border. >> this is the beginning of keeping our promise to the american people that we're going to build a wall. >> reporter: a sentiment reinforced by president trump. >> you got to have a wall. and we need border security. >> reporter: crossing the border is only the beginning of the journey for these migrants. during last year's caravan, there were around 200 people. and only four were given some

form of asylum or relief. diane and kendis. >> >> it is a desperate effort for many of those migrants. president trump is suggesting that the demilitarized zone would be the ideal setting for the upcoming summit with the north korean dictator kim jong un. he says everyone wants do host the historic meeting but he prefers to meet at the peace house where kim just held talks with his south korean counterpart. the president said there will be a great celebration at the site if negotiations are successful. but many top aides are pushing for a neutral location like singapore. an epa whistle blower is an epa whistle blower is accusing pruitt of lying to congress. in an exclusive interview, the former top aide says he was fired for sounding the alarm about excessive spending at the agency. kyra phillips has more. >> reporter: he was part of donald trump's presidential campaign from the start. >> he's great. he's been with me right from the beginning. he's tough as hell, and he's great. >> reporter: kevin chimileski

then got a ticket to washington, eventually becoming deputy chief of staff. for epa administrator scott pruitt. but chimileski says what he saw there and what he said about it cost him his job. he described what a manager told him bluntly. >> administrator pruitt wants to fire you or put you in an office he doesn't have to see you again. >> reporter: he raised concerns early on, like the $43,000 for a secure phone booth and the plans he overheard to rent a private jet for $100,000 per month. i said you realize we can't do that. she said once again, this is what the administrator wanted me to look into. >> reporter: the deal never happened. he drew the line on first-class tickets to morocco. >> i refused to do it. i think that was the beginning of the retaliation. >> reporter: he says he was fired in february, months after first raising concerns over

unethical spending. the epa says he resigned. four days ago, pruitt was grilled by congress about allegations of retaliation upon anyone who defied him. >> i don't ever recall a conversation. when pruitt testified to congress recently, he said he was not aware of any employees being pushed out for raising red flags. was he just straight-out lying? >> bold face lying. >> reporter: more than 170 members of congress, including several republicans have called for pruitt to go. but he says he's here to stay. he also has the support ofhe pres and the whistleblower says despite his feelings about pruitt, he still backs president trump. kyra phillips, washington. more than 1,000 homes in northern arizona are threatened by a raging wildfire. the fast-moving blaze has burned more than 8600 acres and damaged or destroyed several buildings.

one resident who snuck back into past roadblocks says it looks like a war zone. an intense storm system is moving into kansas and nebraska after producing super cells like this one you can see over the texas panhandle. there were frequent lightning strikes but no reports of injuries or damage. and severe dust storms are blamed for pileups in nebraska on two consecutive days. both happened on interstate 80 near lincoln. one person died and more than a dozen others were injured. 11 vehicles were involved in yesterday's pileup, but nobody died there. there's no record of dust storms like these ever in this area. a co-founder of facebook is floating a new idea that facebook users are bound to like. >> it centers on the company actually cutting checks for account holders. brad mielke has the details. >> remember that idea that was floating around a few weeks back, that you could pay facebook for an ad-free

experience? forget that. a co-founder of facebook is saying tech companies should be paying you. chris hughes was a roommate of mark zuckerberg's, the original spokesman for the company. abc's rebecca jarvis sat down with him and gave me the low down. >> what he's proposing is a data tax on all these companies, not just facebook, google, amazon, twitter, any company that uses your information to make money, he says, should pay into a pot, and that pot should be distributed evenly among americans. >> people get a check in the mail? >> reporter: a $400 check is what he said. >> the question is where do you draw the line. your health insurance company knows a lot about you. your bank has a lot of this data. do they pay into this pot? there would be a lot of companies lobbying against it. so it would be an uphill climb. she also says, as consumers wise up, the model is bound to change. you can hear that entire conversation on the start here

the norovirus may be to blame after nearly 100 chicago students got sick after their prom. >> the event was held at the

shedd aquarium. about 500 students attended. more than 90 became ill, with some suffering from diarrhea and vomiting. many were too sick to return to school on monday. >> he's still very sick today. he has not gotten out of his room today. he has a fever, the chills, he's sweating. >> some students say they have been diagnosed with norovirus. it can spread through food and water. the school hasn't uncovered the cause. checking the catering service used at the prom. george powell has been ordered to stand trial for alleged sex offenses. he left court this morning amid tight security. he pled not guilty to several charges. he is the most senior official in the church to be charged for the sex scandal. a date for his trial is expected to be set tomorrow. and bill cosby has now been fitted with a gps ankle monitor. he's not allowed to leave his home after being found guilty of sexual assault.

>> one juror says cosby's own words convinced hi m cosby was guilty. abc's linsey davis was the first to talk to that juror. >> reporter: a stunning revelation that it may have been cosby's own words that sealed his fate. what was the evidence that made you sure beyond a reasonable doubt that he was guilty? >> i think it was his deposition, really. mr. cosby admitted to giving these quaaludes to women, young women, in order to have sex with them. >> reporter: for weeks, there was speculation about the outcome. but we hear just what was going on inside the deliberation room during bill cosby's retrial, thanks to juror number one, harrison snyder. >> reporter: but when you entered the room for the first time, were you sure that he was guilty? >> no. >> reporter: so what then made the difference for you once you started deliberating? >> hearing everyone's comments about certain pieces of evidence and going through the different counts. >> reporter: so you don't feel, even now, that it was an open and shut case? >> no.

>> reporter: the 22-year-old says prior to the trial he didn't know much about cosby and knew nothing about the allegations against him. at cosby's last trial last spring, the jury deliberated for more than 52 hours but was unable to come to a unanimous decision on whether he molested drugged and sexually assaulted andrea constand in 2004. when andrea was on the stand, did you believe her? >> yes. >> reporter: if you hadn't heard from the other five and you just had her word, would that have mattered to you? >> i don't think so. because in the deposition he stated that he gave these drugs to other women. i don't think it really necessarily mattered that these other five women were here. because he said it himself that he used drugs for other women. >> so you found it to be his words as being the most damning of all. >> yes. >> reporter: snyder describes the jury as all being on the

a 12 year old michigan boy is now a 12 year old michigan boy is now back at school after nearly drowning in a hotel pool. >> evan pappas was trapped under water for some eight minutes, but a man nearby jumped into action with a creative way to help evan until a rescue team could free him. >> our affiliate in scranton has more. >> reporter: shawn skurski is called a hero. back in march, skurski was pool side vacationing with his family when a nightmare became reality. >> i was in the hot tub. i hear a lady screaming for help. and i grabbed my son. ran over to see what the problem was, and i see there's two boys in the water i jumped in to start helping. >> reporter: the two boys

pictured were playing in a lazy river when one of them got his leg stuck in a pipe. trapped, the boy was unable to come up for air. >> i dove underwater and started breathing into his mouth. every time i came up, i took another breath, and when i went down i blew my oxygen into his mouth. and on the way up, tried to pull him out, and it just wasn't working. >> reporter: emergency responders estimate the boy was underwater for around eight minutes. if it wasn't for skurski giving him air, this may have turned tragic. >> i had no time to think at all. i saw two boys in the water, i jumped in the pool. it's part of our dna as first responders and corrections officers, that's just what we do. get the job done and think about it later. >> reporter: skurski works as a corrections officer at a state prison and says his experiences there helped him act quickly. he hopes to someday see the boy whose life he saved.

>> hopefully we can get together with the mother and child and we can reunite and come together. >> reporter: that boy who lives in michigan is okay now. earlier this month, the myrtle beach department of public safety flew skurski back to south carolina and gave him a life-saving award for his heroics. >> the boy, a piece of one of their goggles fell under a grate. they were able to move it out of the way not realizing there was a pipe underneath. that's what sucked his leg in. it eventually took four people to be able to free him, because they had to bend a bar that was trapping his leg, but they did get him out, and happy to say, he's back at school. but the family says they're now considering litigation against the resort. the resort put out its own statement saying these things are safe if you don't move the grates.

it comes after nbc news reported that kelly has repeatedly called president trump an idiot. in one meeting on immigration, kelly reported trashed the president saying he doesn't understand what daca is. he's an idiot. we have to save him from himself. nearly immediately, kelly fired back in a statement that says i spend more time with the president than anyone else and we have an incredibly candid relationship. he always knows where i stand, and he and i both know this story is total bs. he called it another attempt to smear people close to the president and distract from his successes. one aide backed the denial, telling abc news he never said that. kelly has come under fire for his handling of the ouster of former staff secretary rob porter, initially defending him as honorable amid allegations of domestic abuse. just last month, the president praised his chief of staff.
