the golden state killer suspect makes a surprise court appearance this morning in sacramento. this as the defense team fights to keep some evidence from coming to light in his case. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. new developments in the case against joseph deangelo. the 72-year-old man accused in the spree of relationships and murders across california decided to show up in court this morning. jessica castro with details on a new motion filed by defense lawyers. >> reporter: joseph james deangelo jr. was back in a courtroom today in a surprise appearance. it was very quick. the whole thing lasting only a minute or so. deangelo was once again wheeled in in his wheelchair. much like we saw him the other day. this time, the judge did not

allow news cameras inside the courtroom. so the video you're seeing here is from the previous proceedings. meanwhile, today the proceedings took place because the defense team has filed a motion to suppress evidence obtained by search warrants executed in this case. and that's because as deangelo's arrest is making international headlines, attorneys for the "los angeles times" and several other news outlets are suing for court records related to his arrest. and questions remain about how investigators tracked down the ex-cop and linked him to a crime spree across california in the 1970s and '80s. the judge today decided that he needs some more time to look over these motions and more time to really make a decision. deangelo jr. was not scheduled to appear again unt but the appearance was added at the defense team's request to make sure the evidence doesn't come to light. we expect deangelo will be there

again tomorrow. breaking news from ohio. a southwest plane flying from chicago to newark was forced to make an emergency landing in cleveland after one of its windows cracked. take a look. these are photos taken by a passenger on board the plane. you see the cracked window there. southwest flight 957 made the landing earlier this morning. no reports of any injuries. this landing comes two weeks after an engine on another southwest flight exploded, blowing out a window on that flight. a woman was partially sucked out of the window and was killed. also breaking now, five people are dead after a military plane crashed in savannah, georgia. the number was confirmed by abc news minutes ago. the c-130 belonged to the puerto rican air national guard. the plane went down about 2.5 hours ago during a training mission. investigators are looking into what caused the crash. a bizarre story involving three sfo employees.

two employees had a baby and were engaged to be married. a third employee wanted to date one of them. this morning, san mateo county prosecutors say that third employee killed his romantic rival to get him out of the way. kevin pressad is accused of killing the man in the driveway of his daley city home last week. investigators say pressad wanted to date the man's fiancee so desperately that he shot him. >> like bang, bang, i hear them. i heard it -- somebody shoot me. i'm just scared. >> i saw my son with blood in his mouth. i saw a hole -- i said, what happened, what happened? i unup-- run upstarts, call 911. >> donovan rivera is accused of being the getaway driver. both will be in court next week.

may bay area high school students are walking out of class to support the second amendment, the right to bear arms. the map shows some of the schools where the protests are planned. montgomery high in santa rose acollege park high in pleasant hill, downtown college prep in san jose, and california high school in san ramon. that's where we find amy hollyfield. a different student walkout than the ones we've seen recently. >> reporter: about 75 students walked out of california high school in san ramon this morning. not an unusual sight especially in the bay area, but some parents were still shocked they heard why they were walking out. >> wait, what? >> reporter: yes. >> no, i didn't know this. i'm kind of shocked. i don't know what to say. >> reporter: these students are walking out in support of the second amendment. the right to bear arms. this comes a month after students across the country

staged walkouts to take a stance against gun violence. >> the kids that have been walking out and represented in the media from the parkland, like parkland firefighte-- park survivors, they don't represent our whole demographic. >> reporter: walkouts like this called stand for the 2nd are happening in at least 40 states. the organizer for ramon saw the event on social media a week ago and decided to host one here. administrators heard about it this morning and quickly got the word out to teachers and police. >> we're here and ready, and again, our role is to ensure that they're able to express their freedom of speech as well as to make sure they're safe. >> reporter: the walkout was peaceful and short, only 16 minutes. a few adults from the neighborhood came by to show their support for the message and to counter all the talk about gun control. >> they want to start imposing more and more regulations. at least in my opinion, i feel that the more regulations, the more bans that go in place, it's just a slippery slope. once you start banning one

thing, there's no reason to not ban the other thing. >> reporter: administrators say they don't take a stance on these issues. they're just here to make sure the students are safe. and it was a safe protest and a short one after 16 minutes, after giving a few speeches, singing the national anthem. they headed back to class. >> thank you. breaking news from washington, d.c., this morning. in the last hour, we've learned white house lawyer ty cobb is leaving his position. cobb was among the original members of president trump's legal team, helping him in the ongoing russia investigation. the white house says cobb had been discussing retirement. we will leave his -- he will leave i had position at the end of the month they say. cobb's departure comes amid new developments in the russia investigation. abc news confirms special counsel robert mueller is warning president trump's lawyers if the president refused to be interviewed he may be subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury. president trump is still calling

the investigation a, quote, witch hunt, months of negotiations between the special counsel and the president have stalled until rudy giuliani joined the president's legal team. >> i can guarantee you this -- when mueller is finished, no matter whatever he does, not going to have a stitch of evidence that he colluded with the russians. that's a disgrace. the case should be over. >> this morning the white house is not commenting on the state of negotiations. yesterday the president called a list of about 50 questions mueller has for him a disgraceful leak when that list came out. the president's defense team had helped to create the list. happening now, the second and final day of facebook's developers conference in san jose. this morning, chief technology officer mark shrapford took the stage at the convention center for the keynote. he laid out the company's ten-year vision for the developers, focusing on three elements -- artificial intelligence, connectivity, virtual reality, and augmented

new this morning, a big change coming to the boy scouts of america. years after some of the local chapters began admitting girls, the national organization is dropping the word "boys" from its flagship program. abc7's matt keller is live with what this means for your scout and why it's controversial on both sides of the issue. matt? >> reporter: the boys and girl scouts have seen numbers drop in the recent years. with the boy scouts accepting girls and changing their name, there's a question about the impact of both organizations. the boy scous of america are changing the name of their flagship program. for 108 years, it has been known as the boy scouts. girls will soon be welcomed in. so today the organization announced a new name -- scouts bsa, and a new ad campaign called scout me in. in a press release today, the boy scouts of america said, "cub scouts is a lot of fun, and now it's available to all kids. that's why we love "scout me in" -- because it speaks to girls

and boys and tells them this is for you, we want you to join." the parent organization will still be caused the boy scouts of america. the cub scouts' title remains for the program for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade. starting in february, the program for 11 to 17-year-olds will be open to girls and will be called scouts bsa. the recent changes to the boy scouts has caused friction with the girl scouts. in response to the name change, the girl scouts of northern california emphasized their organization fulfills a need the boy scouts is not equipped to. they released a statement to abc7 news touting their programs like camping, robotics and entrepreneurship. it says with time-honored, data-backed insight into the needs and interests of girls, girl scouts of the usa empowers 1.8 million girls to lead, learn, and thrive." lisa levenburg is a mother to a girl scout cadet. >> what they offer is unique to the boy scouts. i don't think it will be a

long-term detriment to the girl scouts at all. >> reporter: the boy scouts of america say the cub scouts are already accepting girls. they say so far 3,000 have joined. reporting live, matt keller, abc7 news. >> thank you. a manhunts underway for -- man hunt underway for a registered sex offender who led police on a chase from hollywood to bakersfield. 46-year-old steven hook is a domestic violence suspect from oregon. he drove an r.v. up interstate 5 yesterday afternoon, leading officers on a chase for several hours. a 3-year-old boy and 11-month-old girl were in the vehicle with him. police say hook eventually ditched the r.v., and the children who are safe this morning. now he's wanted for child abduction and weapons violations. senator dianne feinstein says she's changed her stance and is no longer opposed to legalized marijuana. feinstein told mcclatchy's d.c. bureau her position changed after having conversations with constituents, especially those with younger children who have

benefited from medical marijuana. feinstein says she is open to considering federal protection for state legalized marijuana. feinstein's change in heart comes as she faces a primary challenge from state senator kevin deleon. a recent pole by the public policy institute of -- poll by the public policy institute of california shows feinstein in the lead by 26 points. today the san francisco department of environment is officially launching a new campaign to make sure you know how o properly get rid of batteries. recycling companies say batteries that were not properly thrown out have started fires at their facilities. so what do you do with them? if you live in a single-family home in san francisco, put your batteries in a sealed, clear plastic bag, and place them on top of your black bin on collection day. if you live in an apartment building, look for an orange battery recycling bucket. a florida teen is personally thanking apple ceo tim cook after her apple watch saved her life, she says. deanna rectenwald said she was
