claims and might contradict the president. abc's serena marshall has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: kendis, diane, good morning. giuliani is a recent addition to the president's team and while he said mr. trump didn't likely know the specifics, he does know that the general terms of their agreement including taking care of things like this. a shocking admission from the president's own lawyer. >> they funneled it through a law firm, and the president repaid it. >> reporter: on fox news the president's longtime supporter and new defense lawyer rudy giuliani claimed that mr. trump repaid his former lawyer michael cohen for the $130,000 payment to porn star stormy daniels. made as part of a nondiclosure agreement stemming from her alleged decade old affair. >> he didn't know about the specifics of it as far as i know but he did know about the general arrangement that michael would take care of things like this. >> reporter: that claim seems to contradict the president's own statement. >> did you know about the $130,000 payment to stormy daniels? >> no. no. >> reporter: and in march from the white house -- >> there was no knowledge of any payments from the president, and he's denied all these allegations. >> reporter: cohen previously said in a statement he facilitated the payment made

with a personal home equity line and neither the trump campaign nor the trump organization were involved. giuliani claimed the payment was perfectly legal. >> it's not campaign money. no campaign finance violation. >> reporter: stormy daniels' lawyer, however, disagrees calling mr. trump's participation in the payment a felony and says there must be serious consequences for his conduct and his lies and deception to the american people. the white house hasn't yet responded for requests for comments, but the big legal question is, was it made for personal reasons which would not constitute a crime or was it used to help get mr. trump elected which could be considered an illegal campaign contribution? kendis, diane. >> and the president was up tweeting, however, serena not about this. thank you. >> no. all of this coincides with another shake-up in the president's legal team. he's now hired bill clinton's impeachment lawyer, emmet flood, to replace white house lawyer ty cobb who announced his retirement yesterday. cobb has urged the president to cooperate with mueller and answer his questions.

analysts say flood could take a more confrontational stance. meanwhile, a former trump campaign aide was questioned for hours by mueller's team on wednesday. michael caputo told abc's pierre thomas it is clear mueller remains focused on whether the campaign colluded with russia. >> i'm hoping this ends soon, l have more digging to do. >> did they give you any sense that they have anything? >> i believe that they -- they think they're on to something. what that is, i don't know, but they're not messing around. they're talking about the timing of some things that happened at the campaign and at the convention. i think they're completely focused on collusion with russia. >> as to whether president trump will sit down for an interview with mueller, his negotiator, rudy giuliani, says they'd be willing to but only for a narrow set of questions and only for two to three hours max. three americans detained in north korea may be heading home soon. sources say talks are under way now to secure their release. a south korean activist reports the three men were recently

moved to a hotel near the capital city of pyongyang. as president trump prepares for an upcoming meeting with kim jong-un, he is hinting they could be released. he tweeted last night, stay tuned. investigators are trying to determine what caused the crash of a military cargo plane in georgia killing nine people on board. video shows the c-130 which belonged to the puerto rico national guard falling from the sky exploding on a highway barely missing cars and a gas station. the plane had just taken off from the airport in savannah and despite being more than 60 years old, it recently had maintenance work done. >> because a four-engineer plane dropped out of the sky in a bright blue sunny day, they're going to be looking at mechanical problems. this is a real mystery that something so reliable could have had such a catastrophic ending. >> yeah, the timing was also a tragedy. the plane was on its final flight heading to arizona to be taken out of service. it flew missions across the caribbean during last year's hurricane season.

eight police officers in connecticut are recovering after a barn exploded behind a house where officials say a man was holding his wife hostage. the officers all suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and the woman reportedly escaped before the blast. the explosion rattled nearby homes and the fire knocked out power to parts of the neighborhood there in north haven. there's still no word on the fate of that suspect. to the big island now of hawaii and a school closed today amid growing fears of a possible eruption from the kilauea volcano. now, nearby residents are being told to stay on alert after hundreds of small earthquakes rattled the area. those quakes could be a sign that an eruption is imminent. another round of severe weather is expected today in several states. on the radar a line of storms is stretching from south texas to the great lakes. the storms have already spawned tornadoes in kansas, oklahoma and nebraska. and in chicago, security cameras captured high winds ripping a roof off a home.

several cars were also damaged from hail and falling trees. and now it's time for a closer look at your forecast this thursday. good morning. watching out for damaging wind, hail, tornadoes and flash flooding from dallas to kansas city, peoria over towards st. louis and little rock. this is going to continue to be a problem for the great lakes region and detroit as well as severe storms throughout western portions of new york and then we'll have much warmer weather along the east coast with scattered showers throughout the ohio valley region and then by the weekend another round of storms throughout the lower mississippi valley region and throughout the north central part of the country. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. authorities say they have uncovered a plot to attack a shopping mall in texas. coming up, the jailhouse interview with the teenage suspect. also ahead, another scare on a southwest flight. what the airline is saying about this rare window crack. and quite a mystery, how did

we're back with a glowing world record. you're looking at nearly 1,400 drones that lit up the sky in one china city -- chinese city breaking the record for the most unmanned aerial vehicles flying together, but they were kind of out of sync and failed to spell out the date, which was the actual plan. >> still looks cool. >> still looks cool. all right, here at home, the faa is looking into another scary incident on board a southwest airlines flight. a window cracked on a boeing 737 during a trip from chicago to newark forcing the plan to land in cleveland. southwest says the plane was

inspected just last month. boeing 737s have been flying for 50 years. this is the only -- the 27th time something like this has happened. but it comes just two weeks after an engine exploded on a southwest jet breaking a window. that incident killed a passenger. a teenager in dallas is accused of planning a mass shooting at a local mall. authorities claim he was inspired by isis. now police say 17-year-old matin azizi-yarand was stalking out the mall -- staking out the mall and its security for weeks. he's also accused of spending more than a thousand dollars on weapons and tactical gear for the attack and trying to recruit others to join him. well, during a jailhouse interview, he denied the charges. a frightening scene in london. watch this. you can see the flames there exploded in the middle of a jewish festival injuring dozens of people. the fire erupted after a rabbi started a bonfire. witnesses say smartphones were tossed into the bonfire as traditionally part of the event, by the way, and it may have triggered that explosion.

mandalay bay hotel searching the wrong floor, the wrong room. >> police, police, police. >> reporter: trying to desperately find the gunman mercilessly shooting into the crowd of concertgoers below killing 58 innocent people injuring hundreds of others warning people in the casino oblivious to the danger. >> there's a shooter. you guys need to leave. >> reporter: you see sweat dripping down one officer's face as members of the las vegas metropolitan police department strike team finally take their positions outside of stephen paddock's room blowing down the door. >> breach, breach, breach. >> reporter: inside the suite on the 32nd floor finding those high-powered rifles, thousands of rounds of ammunition and the deadliest mass shooter in u.s. history dead after turning one of those guns on himself. police were ordered by a judge to release the videos. these are just the first three hours with thousands of hours more still set to be released. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles.

and the cdc has confirmed the first death in that nationwide e. coli outbreak involving romaine lettuce. that death happened in california, but the outbreak has been traced to romaine from yuma, arizona. it produces 90% of the nation's winter lettuce. so far at least 121 cases have been reported in these 25 states. nearly half those people have been hospitalized with kidney failure. lawmakers in iowa have approved the most strict abortion bill in the country. the so-called heartbeat bill blocks most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is typically six weeks into the pregnancy. now, critics point out that at six weeks most women don't even know they're pregnant as yet. the governor has not said whether she plans to sign the bill. cheerleaders from one nfl team are making some shocking allegations about their treatment during a photo shoot. five cheerleaders from the wall washington redskins spoke to "the new york times" saying

the team, quote, pimped us out to a trip to costa rica in 2013. they say they were required to be topless or only wear body paint in front of guests. those guests were mostly sponsors of the team or suite holders at the stadium. the cheerleaders say some of them were even forced to serve as personal escorts during a visit to a nightclub. >> when they went on this trip, they expected it to be a photo shoot. they didn't realize that they were going to be ordered to entertain some male sponsors of the team. i think the phrase they often use is some of the men were getting handsy. >> in a statement the redskins say each cheerleader is contractually protected to ensure a safe and constructive environment. this is just the latest allegation, though, from nfl cheerleaders in recent months. two former cheerleaders for other teams have filed discrimination complaints describing a hostile work environment. now to the diamonds on the baseball diamond. a costly slide into second base for a major leaguer. yoenis cespedes hit a double last night, but when he slid

the dublin pleasanton area, you could see an emergency response there. the richmond side of the richmond-san rafael bridge, whopping one vehicle heading in that direction. a controversial sex ed proposal kept the fremont board meeting going into the early morning. >> matt keller with more on what was decided. >> reporter: i just got an upside from the fremont unified school district. they sent me an e-mail. the board voted 3-2 to adopt the new sex ed curriculum for seventh to ninth graders, but voted against it 3-2 to adopt it for fourth through sixth graders. this came after hours and hours of hundreds of parents speaking out. >> it is masked as safe and healthy. it is dangerous. >> i implore you not to deny access to this critically important sexual health content

to the students who want and need it. >> it's called the three rs, right, respect and responsibility. seven years ago they decided to start teaching puberty and health education starting in fourth grade. since they did that, they would be required to teach certain things like gender identity and sexual orientation to be compliant with state law. the board's vote this morning means no sex education will be taught until seventh grade here in fremont. parents still have the choice to opt out. live in fremont, matt keller, abc 7 news. abc news is reporting right now that talks are under way regarding the release of three american citizens detained in north korea. i'm watching the story closely for you from our live desk. one of those detainees is a 62-year-old am, kim dong chu detained on spying charges three years ago.
