i'll have more details in the next report. natasha 680 between scott creek and durham road in the fremont area, we had overnight road work, looks like that's wrapping up on time. that backup is starting to thin out very quickly. next traffic update coming up at 6:10. could the dna search that led to the man accused of being the golden state killer finally lead police to the notorious zodiac killer. >> abc 7's amy hollyfield live in san francisco. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. another example police are using non-traditional techniques to try to crack old cases. in this case police are using these letters, the zodiac killer sent them to newspapers. according to "the sacramento bee," investigators sent these let ters to a private dna database to try to create a genetic profile that could lead them to the killer. this sounds very similar to the techniques used to track the

golden state killer. those investigators turned to a genetic dna database. the zodiac killed five people from 1968 to 1969. he claims he killed more. turning to public genealogy sites opens up a new world for police who have traditionally only been able to test dna against databases with samples from convicted criminals. investigators from san francisco to vo say they're still working the case. they think the zodiac killer is probably dead. they're hoping to get the dna results back and start working on the profile within the next few weeks. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. this morning the suspect in the golden state killer case is expected back in court. 72-year-old joseph deangelo appeared briefly for a hearing yesterday. retired auburn police chief nick willet wonders if he could have

helped catch him more than 30 years ago. he fired him in 1969 for stealing dog repellant and a hammer. he was told that deangelo went to his house one night to kill him but couldn't find his bedroom. >> a short time after he had been fired, i woke up one morning, my 4-year-old daughter was laying alongside the bed. she said dad, last night there was someone looking in my bedroom window with a flashlight. >> did you think that could have been joseph deangelo outside your home? >> no, i have did not. >> investigators say they used dna to identify deangelo as the killer responsible for at least a dozen murders and 50 rapes. yesterday his defense attorney asked the court to stop prosecutors from taking any additional dna from him. a decision on the motion is expected at today's hearing. "20/20" is devoting to t t week's episode to deangelo.

it airs tomorrow night at 10:00 followed by abc 7 news at 11:00. from our live desk, we're watching a situation in oakland overnight. this is video of a huge police presence in the oakland hills area. it's at grizzly peak boulevard and fish ranch road. you can see there were a lot of police there overnight. several units responding to the scene. witnesses say they think there may have been someone barricaded in an rv. that remains unclear. we've reached out to oakland police to get better information. there may still be a search going on. i'll let you know if yes get any updates during our newscast. happening today, a teenage driver accused of hitting a police officer in san francisco is scheduled to enter a plea in court. >> 18-year-old melissa an droe vich is charged with felony hit-and-run and driving without a license. she hit an officer in the tender loin two weeks ago. she left the scene and was arrested in the richmond

district a short time later. the officer has been released from the hospital. we want to help hayward police find this guide dog. wilton disappeared yesterday morning. the 5-year-old black male lab was seen in castro valley near redwood road near proctor elementary school. if you have any fin foe, call hayward police. the military cargo plane that crashed in georgia was on its final flight. nine members of the puerto rico national guard died in the accident yesterday. the plane was on its way to be retired in arizona when it crashed on a highway near the airport in savannah. it flew humanitarian missions after a hurricane hit puerto rico last year. a salvage operation off din dough march beach turned into a rescue. >> sky 7 was overhead yesterday afternoon as a crew tried to salvage a boat that had run aground over the weekend. the two workers connected a line from the dug boat to the boat.

18 miles an how on 84 if you want to use that. if that doesn't make sense from you, coming from a little further to the west of that crash, you can take foothill to sunol boulevard for an alternate. you'll see delays. we'll look at drive times coming up next. santa cruz officials have issued water restrictions in case a drought is on the way. it means no landscape watering between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and no washing down hard or paved surfaces like sidewalks and driveways. although the city's main reservoir is full. santa cruz's largest water source which is the san lorenzo river is experiencing lower-than-normal levels and expected to dwindle in the coming months. the men arrested at a philadelphia starbucks have settled with the city for a dollar. that's not the whole story.

programs that support young entrepreneurs. starbucks has made a commitment to change company policy. >> the most important thing is the foundation, the fact we have a seat at the table to work on reforms to be included in racial bias moving forward and hopefully other companies will follow. >> you can see the entire interview with robin roberts at 7:00 a.m. on gma. we want to warn you again about eating romaine lettuce. the first death reported in the erks coli outbreak and it happened here in california. health officials have not released anymore details about the death, but we do know at least 121 people got sick in 25 states. at least 52 have been hospitalized including 14 with kidney failure. that's an unusually high number of hospitalizations. the bad lettuce was traced back to yuma, arizona. that's where 90% of the lettuce in the winter is produced.

hours and hours of debate. in the end fremont schools will be teaching this new sex ed curriculum, just not to all students. here are the details on the vote. the board voted 3-2 to adopt a new sex ed curriculum for 7th to 9th grade, but voted 3-2 against for adopting it for 4th through 6th grade. hundreds of parents showed up last night to speak out. >> is this the right way to teach sixth grade kids about sexual activity? of course not. >> it's up to you whether or not you would like to have that instruction come from your household with your values or whether or not you would like to have the help of the school district. >> reporter: the curriculum is called three rs, rights, respect, responsibility. the district superintendent said seven years ago they decided to start teaching puberty and health education in fourth grade even though mows school districts don't start until middle school. since they did that, they would be required to teach things such as gender identity and sexual orientation to be compliant with

state law. the board's vote this morning means no sex education will be taught until seventh grade. parents still have the choice to opt out. live in fremont, matt keller, abc 7 news. breaking news, iran's foreign minister says iran will not renegotiate or add on to its nuclear deal with the u.s. and other powers. the foreign minister said demands by president trump to change the nuclear deal with tehran is unacceptable. he made those comments on youtube this morning. he spoke in english and said the u.s. constantly violated the nuclear deal by, quote, bullying others to prevent businesses to return to iran. this does come as the deadline set by the u.s. to fix the deal is getting closer and closer. president trump said he want to fix the terrible flaws in the deal by may 12th. that's less than ten days away. federal officials released a detailed report and new video

you have to see about a very close call at sfo in july. >> this video from the national transportation and safety board shows an air canada flight may have come ags close as ten feet from hitting a philippines airlines jet, seconds away from triggering what would have been one of the worst aviation disassters in history. it was last suchl her when the air canada crew received permission to land on a runway. instead the jet flew right towards a taxiway. air canada's landing lights illuminating a jet on the taxiway. >> where is this guy going? he's on the taxiway. >> looks like you were lined up for charlie there. >> air canada flew directly over us. >> the air canada flight aborted the landing after being ordered to go around. the ntsb still has not issued its final report. getting a look at video showing a uc berkeley student escaping an armed robber. the victim fought off her

attacker while she tried to get inside a dorm building. it happened early sunday morning at channing way and college avenue. the man appeared to have a gun in his left hand. the woman finally got away from that man. if you recognize him, campus police want to hear from you. >> a photographer is searching for stolen memories after someone broke into his truck in oakland. the photographer says the thief took wedding photos and photography equipment after smashing his truck's window. it happened last sunday on skyline boulevard. he said he just wants the camera's memory card back, no questions asked, so he can give a couple their wedding photos he took earlier on the same day of the theft. deputies need your help to find two suspects in sonoma. two robbers stormed a home on pris rose court in unincorporated santa rosa. one man came through the front door and the other through the back. at least one of them pulled out a handgun. they tied up a man who was inside. the robbers stole an

undetermined amount of marijuana and left in a newer model gray van. b.a.r.t. says it's trying to clean up one of its san francisco stations after a video shows rampant drug use. that video you see here went viral. >> it was taken by a b.a.r.t. commuter. you may have seen something like this. it shows drug addicts shooting up as commuters walk through. others slumped over and unconscious, some in pools of vomit. b.a.r.t. says this was taken early in the morning when civic center station just opened and that's when officers are on a shift change. >> the addicts obviously learned the patterns of our officers. we're making changes to those shift patterns, the shift changes and we're in the going to publicize those, suffice it to say we have made changes to close that window. >> b.a.r.t. has hired nearly two dozen new cleaners and plan to bring in more jan terse and community service officers to patrol downtown san francisco stations. what do you think of b.a.r.t.'s effort to fight these

issues? share your thoughts with us and use #dearbart when you post on social media. now to a possible bombshell admission involving president trump. former new york city mayor rudy giuliani told fox news the president reimbursed his attorney for the $130,000 paid to person star stormy daniels. giuliani is a recent addition to the president's legal team. he said the payment was shortly before the 2016 election. the white house and the president have repeatedly denied the affair. this morning on gma, abc news chief legal analyst dan abrams says giuliani's admission proves that robert mueller already knows about this. >> they know in particular after the raid of michael cohen that mueller knows exactly what happened with that payment. they also know that mueller knows why donald trump fired james comey. they talked to a lot of people who were there at the time. i think at this point they're saying let's get this out there.
