walk free. >> randy thompson was 15 years at the time at the time he and jae williams scabbed to death michael russell at a san jose home. now the fate is up to another judge because of proposition 57. >> abc 7 news reporter chris wynn is will live at the santa clara county juvenile center with the story. chris. >> reporter: ama and larry for the family of the victim this was the last place they wanted to be. eight years after the brutal murder, another hearing for one of the men already convicted. in 2009, randy thompson, 15, along with 16-year-old jae williams stabbed to death 15-year-old michael russell at his home in san jose. the three were friends as in and classmates. >> nine years ago this is where he was. and now we're back in this spot. something is wrong. >> thompson and williams admitted to worshipping the devil and wanting to kill just for the thrill of it. they were tried as adults in

separate trials and sentenced to 26 years to life in prison. but with the passage of proposition 57 in 2016, cases like these could return to the spotlight. angering those viewing it as a potential loop hole. approved by nearly a 2 to one margin it was to reduce the overcrowded prisons by spanning parole eligible for non-violent criminals. however the measure gave judges not prosecutors the power to decide whether to try certain juveniles as adults in court. thompson has yet to exhaust appeals so heically be loutd a transfer hearing. the law professor here can't imagine thompson being recommendsed but says these types of cases have to make their way through the courts on a circumstantial basis. >> the appeals run the course and from here on out proposition 57 has a clear procedure you recall mechanism for dealing with these cases into the future. >> today was a detention hearing

oakland. check out the flames. it started after 3:00 in the southbound direction near the fifth street on ramp. you can see the flames shooting out into the air. the chp says the vehicle was engulfed in flames. there is noward on whether anyone was hurt or even if anyone was inside the vehicle at the time that this happened. the suspected golden state killer appeared in a sacramento courtroom once again. the prosecution came away a small victor. this is as we hear from more victims. marshalsy gonzalez with the latest. >> reporter: accused serial killer joseph deangelo back in court a third time handcuffed in a wheelchair. this time the 72-year-old hearing a judge's ruling allowing prosecutors to collect additional dpa fingerprints and photographs of his body. something his attorneys tried to block. >> no comment at this point. >> deangelo believed to be the so-called golden state kill he accused of a dozen murders, 50 rapes and more than 100 burglaries in the the 70s and

devoting this week's episode to the golden state killer, the history of the suspect and why it took so long to make an arrest. 2020 aires tomorrow night at 10:00 followed by news at 11:00. the arrest in the golden state killer case is renewing efforts to solve other cold cases using the dpa technology. >> at the time top of the list is the custody yack killer who terrorized the bay area in the late 60s. kristen sze with more on that kristen. >> reporter: larry and ama the custody yack killer is claimed to have killed five people though claims to have killed more. this is a map of where it happened. san francisco, that's in the presidio heights neighborhood. lake berry he issa. blue rock springs in vallejo. and lastly in benesy and lake herpen road. that was all in the late 'siktsz. today vallejo police confirm they sent dpa of the custody yack killer to a private lab.

hoping to build a profile. that could be compared against those in public dna dbs and help investigators track him down using the family tree tracing that led them to the golden state killer suspect. vallejo police are working off of two envelopes. they contain some of the letters the custody yack killer sent to police and newspapers taunting them with mysterious skriefrs. the vallejo victims were a young couple. she died but he vifd. over the past half century the search for the serial killer resulted in books, movies, potential suspects and even confessions. but nothing has been conclusive. investigators say they haven't given up hoping new dpa technology will allow them to finally solve the puzzle that the custody yack killer was so fond of. >> thank you. i want to take you back out to the breaking news in marin county live pictures from sky 7. according to the marin county sheriffs department two people
