district. wabc's toni yates can barely keep a straight face during this one. >> reporter: we talked to a lot of people today, and it has a lot of people saying what the heck and why? the school started monitoring that track and field area and quickly nabbed a suspect. he is still being paid while he takes administrative leave from his role as superintendent of kenilworth schools. he lives a few miles from holmdel high school where police have been trying to figure out who had been relieving themselves at and near the football field and track. they announced on the facebook page that they caught the culprit in the act. he was identified as tramaglini, who is 42 years old. the school district announced his paid leave on its page, assuring faculty, staff and

good morning. good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following on this friday on "world news now." hawaii's kilauea spewing red hot lava into neighborhoods. a massive fire at a chemical plant in louisiana has forced evacuation of residents within a mile. the plant is owned by a company that provides products to the oil and gas industry. it's unclear what sparked the explosion that caused that fire. and the first lady, melania trump, is set to unveil her policy initiatives as first lady on monday. her spokeswoman says the focus will be on the well-being of children, including social media health and addiction. and 20 horses are expected to start tomorrow's kentucky

>> the latest quake registered a 5.0. a scientist explains why that is important. >> all of the earthquakes occurring in hawaii over the last few days were tracking this underground progression of magma. it picks up quite a bit as it ascends to the surface. the fountain of lava, something that we're used to seeing in hawaii, unfortunately, we're not used to seeing in residential areas. they're like bulldozers. they don't stop for anything in their paths. houses, agriculture, roads, power lines, so forth, are going to be consumed by this flow and destroyed. i really fear for the people in the puna district. a hurricane hit that corner of the island and later that year the highway was almost cut.

they've really been through a lot down there. >> as a precaution, emergency officials have warned residents to be prepared for a possible evacuation. at least they had a heads up on that. they also closed the area to visitors and ordered private tour companies to stop taking people into the region. >> we're going to continue to keep an eye on that for later this morning on "america this morning." now to the president's fixer and new levels of scrutiny that he's facing from investigators. >> we already knew about the fbi raid on cohen. now we learn they were keeping track of his phone calls. kyra phillips has the latest. >> reporter: sources tell abc news that in the days leading up to that raid of the home, office and hotel room of president trump's personal attorney, federal investigators were

tracking michael cohen's phone calls. it's called pen register. investigators could see who he was calling and who was calling him all in real time, but they were not wire tapping, not listening to any conversations. all part of a criminal investigation, in part, looking at possible secret deals made during the campaign to protect donald trump. >> why do you think they raided your office and hotel room? >> reporter: it's unclear how long before the raids investigators started tracking cohen's phone calls. but sources tell abc news cohen and the president spoke just days after the raids, meaning that phone call could be on investigators' radar. court filings already reveal prosecutors used warrants to search cohen's e-mails covertly as part of their months long vision into possible criminal conduct. the president has railed against those raids. >> it's a disgraceful situation. >> reporter: declaring attorney-client privilege is

dead. the white house wouldn't say if cohen is still the president's attorney. >> i'm not aware of specific places where he's representing the president. >> reporter: clearly there is mounting pressure on michael cohen. his personal finances and relationship with the president coming under intense scrutiny. and sources close to cohen vow that he will not flip on his most famous client. kyra phillips, abc news, washington. rudy giuliani says there's a 50/50 chance that mueller will try to compel trump to testify before the grand jury in the russia investigation. now we learned earlier this week that mueller has already raised the prospect of a subpoena if the president refused to sit for an interview. and the top spokeswoman for scott pruitt is leaving the agency.

liz bowman tells us her departure was a personal decision and has nothing to do with ongoing investigations of pruitt. she's the fourth aide to leave his side. and a miami police officer is suspended with pay this morning because of what happened during the arrest of a suspect. that officer is seen on video, appearing to kick the suspect in the head. victor oquendo has details. >> reporter: it's what happened at the end of this arrest that has people in outrage. down and being handcuffed, watch this miami police officer come running into frame kicking david swaso in the head. >> you didn't have to do all that, buddy. >> reporter: neighbors watching in shock while officers led him away. >> don't resist him, babe. >> reporter: this woman who wants to remain anonymous filming it all. >> the police officer comes running at him and hits him like a football. >> reporter: he was spotted in a stolen car.

when police tried to pull him over he led them on a chase, eventually crashing and taking off running. this video posted on facebook and within hours miami pd taking swift action. saying the video depicts a clear violation of policy. the officer has been relieved of duty, suspended pending investigation. prosecutors opened their own investigation into the officer's actions. victor oquendo, abc news, miami. and another 70 people from that migrant caravan have crossed into the u.s. caravan organizers say that brings the total number who have turned themselves in to authorities to 158. but seeking asylum is a process that could take years. and most of these families will spend months in detention facilities before any decisions are made. and the ceo of nike has assembled its entire staff at headquarters for an apology.

the cockpit and told the pilot. the flight was operated by one of united's regional providers. united is investigating. the airline has apologized and compensated the passengers. the flight land safely. the flight attendant was met by police. the suspected golden state killer has lost his bid to stop the collection of more of his dna. prosecutors wanted more fingerprints from him and photos of his body as they continue their investigation. joseph deangelo is suspected in at least a dozen murders and more than 50 rapes between 1976 and 1986. so far he has not entered a plea. for the folks out there who have a twitter account, you may want to change your password. >> twitter is warning all of its users about a potential glitch that exposed a substantial number of passwords. the internal investigation shows no indication of actual breach or misuse by anyone. it's not clear that any

you can kind of see the eruption there on that road. >> you can really see it there. >> as that car was turning around. the eruption comes hours after an earthquake measuring 5.0 rocked the area. one of hundreds reported all week long. we spoke to a scientist who specializes in volcanos. >> it began in the subdivision, which is an area in the lower puna district. and that is being completely evacuated because of the danger of this eruption. it's not currently a threat to life, because lava flows are relatively easy to get away from. however, you can't stop these flows. so certainly property and infrastructure are in danger. these lava flows are like bulldozers. they don't really stop for anything in their paths. so houses, agriculture, roads,

power lines and so forth are going to be consumed by this flow and destroyed. >> that video is just incredible. kilauea's been active since 1983. the last time lava threatened this area was in 2014, not a long time ago. >> roughly 200,000 people live on that particular island. even though it's called the big island. but this has been -- look at that one. i guess we're not taking that road. hopefully they've taken that off the gps for now. hope folks are staying safe out there in hawaii. >> yes, please. we're going to continue now with more breaking news from southern louisiana, a massive inferno at a chemical plant. thick black smoke for miles rising into the sky. and residents living within a mile of the plant have been evacuated. officials say the fire started after containers holding flammable chemicals just exploded. it's unclear why those containers blew up. the plant is operated by a

company that provides products and services to the oil and gas industry. and we turn now to the russia investigation and the combative new approach from president trump's revamped legal team. >> rudy giuliani tells abc news there's a 50/50 shot the president would be subpoenaed. and he says he's preparing for that fight. giuliani argues his revelation that the president reimbursed the hush money paid to stormy daniels shields him from campaign finance violations. here's jonathan karl. >> reporter: for the first time, president trump acknowledged he reimbursed his lawyer, michael cohen, for the $130,000 payoff to porn star stormy daniels. last month, the president flatly denied knowing anything about the hush money. >> did you know about the $130,000 payment to stormy daniels? >> reporter: cohen claimed he paid daniels out of his own pocket. what we didn't know until now, president trump paid him back out of a personal account.

the president's new lawyer, rudy giuliani, broke that news on fox, seeming to surprise even sean hannity, as he argued the payment didn't violate campaign finance law. >> that money was not campaign money. sorry, i'm giving you a fact now that you don't know. it's not campaign money. no campaign finance violation. >> so they funneled it through the law firm. >> funneled it through the law firm and the president repaid it. >> oh. i didn't know he did. >> yeah. >> reporter: stormy daniels signed the hush agreement just 11 days before the election. but giuliani insisted the payment had nothing to do with the campaign. >> it wasn't for the campaign. it was to save their marriage as much as their reputation. >> reporter: still, minutes later he suggested the hush agreement was about the campaign after all. >> imagine if that came out on october 15th, 2016 in the middle of the last debate with hillary clinton. >> so to make it go away -- >> cohen didn't even ask.

in the meantime, abc news has learned federal investigators were tracking michael cohen's phone calls. sources say they did not listen in on any conversations, but they could see cohen and who he was calling and who was calling him. even before the fbi raided his office and homes and it's part of a criminal investigation, also looking into possible secret deals to protect trump during the campaign. the white house is not saying if cohen is still the president's attorney. the chaplain of the house of representatives has been reinstated after sending a scathing letter to the speaker. father conroy said he was also told maybe it was time they had a chaplain that wasn't catholic. despite letting conroy keep his job, ryan said his decision was based on doing what was best for the house.

one person is dead after a shooting at a nashville mall. police in riot gear locked down that mall and set up a perimeter as shoppers ran for cover. the tim later died at the hospital. and in northern california, an elderly man allegedly shot two people inside an apartment complex then ran from the scene, prompting an evacuation. police say witnesses spotted him running into an apartment where they later found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. one victim died at the hospital, the other in intensive care. it's not clear if the gunman knew the victims. if you have a twitter account, you might want to change your password right now. twitter is warning all 330 million of its users to change their passwords after a glitch exposed a substantial number of passwords internally, several months, actually.

district. wabc's toni yates can barely keep a straight face during this one. >> reporter: we talked to a lot of people today, and it has a lot of people saying what the heck and why? the school started monitoring that track and field area and quickly nabbed a suspect. he is still being paid while he takes administrative leave from his role as superintendent of kenilworth schools. he lives a few miles from holmdel high school where police have been trying to figure out who had been relieving themselves at and near the football field and track. they announced on the facebook page that they caught the culprit in the act. he was identified as tramaglini, who is 42 years old. the school district announced his paid leave on its page,
