good luck to you both. making news in america this morning, volcano emergency. evacuations overnight on the big island of hawaii after a powerful earthquake. the kilauea volcano erupting. lava flowing through streets toward homes. >> these lava flows, they're like bulldozers. they don't really stop for anything in their path. >> the new images coming in. the showdown between president trump and special counsel robert mueller takes a new combative turn. this morning the odds of mueller hitting trump with a subpoena and the new scathing editorial from "the wall street journal" blasting the president's public deceptions. a nasa science competition sabotaged. three high school girls advance to the finals. >> we always say, you know, we're the new generation of "hidden figures."
4:01 am
>> only to be targeted by hackers because of their race. the outcry and who is coming to their side now. those stories, plus, parents demand answers after their son is hypnotized at a post-prom party falling to the floor. caught on camera, a man's wild attempt to escape from this courthouse jumping the railing. and the buzz about one very distracted driver with 3,000 bees on the loose inside his truck. a good friday morning. hawaii's governor has declared an emergency and the national guard is now carrying out mandatory evacuations near the erupting kilauea volcano. >> yeah, the volcano is spewing red hot lava as far as 150 feet into the air. it's also flowing through dense forest land and finally onto residential streets.
4:02 am
>> emergency officials going door to door evacuating residents. some say even experts can't predict the exact time of a coming eruption or how long it could last. >> we could hear the lava exploding right from the house, and so, you know, is the house going to still be there when we go back over there? it might be. the lava is flowing downhill. we're uphill, but, you know, it's going to be changing the scenery for sure. >> that's for sure. some nearly 200,000 people living on the big island there. now, the eruption comes after hundreds of earthquakes rocked the area for days. scientists say all that shaking is opening new cracks in the ground and could release additional lava that's buried underneath. >> fountains of lava are something that we're used to seeing in hawaii. unfortunately we're not used to seeing them in residential areas which is exactly where this is happening now. these lava flows, they're like bulldozers. they don't really stop for anything in their path, so houses, agriculture, roads, power lines and so forth are going to be consumed by this flow and destroyed. >> now, those who live nearby say the eruption is more than
4:03 am
just visual. they say the lava has a strong smell of sulfur, and the sound, one person compared it to putting rocks in a dryer and turning it on. >> all right. we'll have the very latest on that on "good morning america." but we're going to turn now to washington and the legal challenges facing the president now that he admits to paying the hush money to stormy daniels. >> as the president defends that move, we're also learning that federal investigators were keeping track of attorney michael cohen's phone calls. abc's serena marshall has the latest on that. serena, good morning. >> reporter: kendis and diane, good morning. and rudy giuliani is arguing that because the president's repayment to michael cohen came from his personal accounts after the election, no campaign finance laws were vie laid so instead he's preparing for a different legal fight. with the truth emerging on the payments to porn star stormy daniels, the president's new lawyer, rudy giuliani, told abc news overnight he believes this one is settled saying, i think the investigation with him largely fell apart with the loss of the campaign finance possible violation.
4:04 am
on fox news -- >> but it wasn't for the campaign. >> right. >> it was to save their marriage -- not their marriage as much as their reputation. >> reporter: but minutes later giuliani suggested it actually was about the campaign. >> imagine if that came out on october 15th, 2016 in the middle of the last debate with hillary clinton. >> reporter: the new admission of the payment came after months of denials by the white house. >> how are the american people to trust or believe what is said here and what is said by the president? >> we give the very best information that we have at the time. >> reporter: the often conservative leaning "wall street journal" in an editorial questions given the attempted cover-up, does trump want americans to believe him in a genuine crisis? meanwhile -- >> mr. cohen, why do you think they raided your office and hotel room? >> reporter: -- sources tell abc news that in the days leading up to the raid of the home, office and hotel room of president trump's personal attorney, michael cohen, who is also responsible for that
4:05 am
original payment to daniels, federal investigators were tracking his phone call, watching who he was calling and who was calling him at the same time but not listening to those conversations. former new york city mayor giuliani says the battle he is preparing for is a subpoena from the special counsel. he put the odds around 50%, but he says i've got to be prepared for that 50%. kendis and diane. >> that, indeed. serena marshall live for us from d.c. thanks, serena. one more note out of washington. the controversy on capitol hill where the chaplain of the house is back on the job this morning. he's been reinstated after sending a scathing letter to the house speaker, paul ryan. father patrick conroy says ryan's chief of staff, jonathan burks, told him maybe it's time we had a chaplain that wasn't catholic. now, he said the aide also complained about a prayer in which conroy warned about the impact of tax cuts. the release of three american prisoners in north korea could be imminent this morning. the men have reportedly been moved from a labor camp to a medical facility. the speculation comes as
4:06 am
tensions appear to be easing on the peninsula, but the parents of a former u.s. detainee are speaking out about what happened to their son and accusing north korea of using him as a political pawn. this morning, three families are hopeful that the last american hostages in north korea will be freed. >> there's good days. there's bad days, you know, but we try to focus on maybe is today is he going to be released? >> reporter: as president trump prepared to meet with kim jong-un, new lawyer, rudy giuliani, is fueling anticipation that the men could be released very soon. >> we got kim jong-un impressed enough to be releasing three prisoners today. >> reporter: president trump recently tweeted, the past administration has long been asking for three hostageses to be released from a north korean labor camp but to no avail. stay tuned. only one of the detainees taken under the obama administration, the other two u.s. citizens were detained after trump took office. the white house tried to clarify the president's statement. >> i think you can also look at otto warmbier, who was detained

during the previous administration as was one of the current detainees, and so that would reflect the president's comments that he made. >> reporter: it was just last year that a severely brain damaged 22-year-old otto warmbier died less than a week after arriving back home. his parents have filed a wrongful death lawsuit accusing north korea of torturing their son. the warmbiers spoke at the united nations last night vowing not to stay silent about what happened to their son despite the easing tensions on the korean peninsula. >> they used him as a political pawn for as long as they could, and when they could no longer -- when he was of no value to them, they essentially sent him home to our family in a body bag. >> the only thing we can do is rub their noses in this. it embarrasses them. they don't like the world to think that they aren't trying to be a member of the world. >> meanwhile in another sign of

easing tensions on the korean peninsula, "the new york times" reports president trump has requested options from the pentagon to reduce the number of u.s. troops in south korea. officials have not yet announced a date or location for the upcoming talks with kim jong-un. and back in this country, people living within a mile of a burning chemical plant in louisiana spent the night evacuated from their homes. you see that massive explosion there at the plant near lafayette. it was followed by a massive fire that sent some thick black smoke high into the sky. it's unclear what caused the blast. no injuries reported. time now to take a look at your weather for this friday morning. radar shows a line of storms hovering over the upper midwest and the great lakes, which forecasters say could bring damaging winds later today, and in the northeast cooler air is moving in, and thunderstorms are likely this evening. looking at today's high temperatures, it's still
