hawaii, lava continues to keep people out of the their homes on the big island and leaves them unsure when they'll be able to return. eruptions are blasting lava into the leilani estates subdivision, damaging homes there. at least eight vents have opened up in the neighborhood, making it too dangerous to breathe. sin kilauea's eruption on thursday, several quakes have jolted the island, including a 6.9 magnitude friday afternoon. abc news reporter brian clark has the latist developments. >> reporter:s residents on the southern par i fatsing lava, strong earthquakes and toxic gas. >> we're now up to fissure number eight. the bottom line is we have additional outbreaks of lava.

>> reporter: 1800 people forced to evacuate. >> police came down our draftway and said we had to get out. >> reporter: several homes have been destroyed. >> just knowing that we're not going to have a house, the lava -- my we've is still in tears. >> reporter: the lava is not the only danger. >> we also have elevated levels of gas here. >> reporter: officials are so concerned about the dangerous air quality, they've set up road blocks to prevent people from getting too close. >> when the environment is safe, we will be able to admit them back into the area. >> reporter: the eruptions have been triggered by multiple earthquakes, including a 6.9 magnitude friday, the biggest in hawaii since 1975.

no one has been seriously injured. scientists say it's nearly impossible to predict how long an eruption will last, so residents are bracing for possible repeats of these natural disasters. brian clark, abc news, new york. a bay area family who just moved to hawaii from santa rosa, after surviving the wildfires is among those being forced to evacuate. they are among those who have had to leave their homes. the earthquakes have made it different to sleep and then nature showed its force, just 200 feet from their home. a fissure opened up spewing toxic gas and lava. >> it sounded like a jet engine on a freight train driving thrust just pane after pane of glass. this is so new and you don't know what to expect. >> at this point, it is a waiting game, and the family has no idea when they'll be able to

go home. the chp needs your help to find a driver who hit and killed a man in discovery bay. investigators looked for clues along highway 4 near bixler road yesterday morning. they believe the victim was killed sometime late friday night. it's believed the vehicle that hit hem was a 2002 to 2006 tundra pickup or sequoia suv. the contra costa county coroner's trying to identify the man who was killed. his tour will continue for bay area rapper g-easy, even after he was arrested and convicted following a fight in sweden. the judge quickly found the musician guilty on friday. tmz reports he was being belligerent before punching security guards. police say they found cocaine inside his pocket. he was released from custody after paying a $9,000 fine.

the record-setting rock climber rescued from the side of el capitan is rushing to get back home to the bay area. we have the details of his scary fall and the rescue. >> reporter: you're looking at a sky-high selfie, unlike any other. hans instagraming his own rescue from el capitan. >> this is the nose route. we were right about there. >> they were attempting a one-day ascent on thursday. >> hans has ascended various routes, 178 times. nobody has done more. he's done this route on the nose 110 if we're counting this one. >> but this time a nut slipped out of the rob, dropping him more than 20 feet. he hit his legs on a ledge during the fall. >> i knew because things were happening. i basically pulled out my phone,

ucsf says they have already rescheduled hundreds of appointments. if there's an emergency, patients will be sent to other hospitals. this walkout is supposed to last for three days, in a union effort to increase salaries. it affects the six medical centers the most, but all ten campuses could be impacted. more than 20 people on the peninsula have turned in guns they no longer want. yeer news was in redwood city when the san mateo county sheriff's office and other agencies hosted a gun buyback. congresswoman jackie speer, who was shot five times in 1978 while investigating the jonestown cult, spoke about her support for gun control. >> as a survivor of gun violence many decades ago, i can tell you that it is more profound than

a baby has died after being mauled by a dog. the 3-month-old was in critical condition when she was taken to the hospital, where she later died. officers took three dogs at the

at the sonoma county fairgrounds. first, the farm and last week once again a small fire sparked, bringing back horrible memories for students. we have their story. >> the fire started in one of these two, and burnt the tarp on the back. there was a whole other part that got brnt up rural the ag students know that thursday night's fire could have been worse, most of them rushed to the small barn in their pajamas. >> because of the tubbs fire, it was automatic an instant adrenaline rush. >> on october 9th, the tubbs fire destroyed the department's far and barns out on alba lane. no animals were lost then. thursday night, all were saved, too, but the fire brought all of

lasting tribute. a tree was planted in his memory. the st. mary's magnolia stands in a new median along fulton street. he died unexpectly of a heart attack in december. yesterday would have been his 66th birthday. former mayor willie brown reflected on the honor for his friend. the city does one troo he in memory of somebody december or in honor of somebody every year. there's no question this should be the year of ed lee, to do it on his birthday is quite a celebrations. friends of lee's family helped planned that tree. generations of graduates celebrated the 90th anniversary of a san francisco public high school. music filled the air at balance boo high school. it opened in 1928. a graduate who is almost as old

police in ohio are praising a grandpa's quick reflexes for helping them catch an armed man on the run. columbus police showed several videos, the grandfather with a cane tripped the suspect. he then dropped his gun. the grandpa only wants to be identified as bill. a pristine pasture in new zealand has turned into a science spectacle. a huge sinkhole opened revaling tens of thousands offees of geological history. it's about 600 feet long, 60 feet wide, 60 feet deep. scientists say it likely started as a small crack, and once the rainward seeped in, it grew exponentially. there one was an active volcano in the area.

low clouds, wow, what a beautiful sight. it looks like the low clouds will be with us for the next couple hours, the high clouds as well, but wee get more sun throughout the afternoon today than we had yesterday. they'll be going up and down. livermore 72, then a bump up tomorrow, then the numbers cool down a bithat strengthens our onshore flow, and then look what is happens. that backs off. we're talking about the warmest temperatures we have seen all season, not only in livermore, but around the entire bay area. now how still the wind is it's all due to a weak weather system, so this is influencing our weather throughout the day today. it did yesterday, not bringing

any rain, but allows for clouds and cooler numbers, so pretty advantage point here once again. also in mountain view, 53 in oakland, with 54 in san jose. pretty gray for you in emeryville, temperatures in the 60s with breezy winds ought times. 51 in santa rosa, 52 in novato. i talked about the winds in the upper elevations, over 25 miles an hour from the north bay, but as you get into the east bay, we're looking at least 20 to 30 miles an hour. if you can check out the color coding here, a bit of blue and yellow, also to the south there. that's where we have an indicator showing us their gusty winds. at the coast we'll see them up to 30 miles an hour. temperatures in the 60s but notice the cloud cover, coastal

. happening today, you can celebrate parks and public spaces, in the annual festival. it's in burlingame, teaching people the importance of parks, healthy activity and quality of life. there will be face painting a bounce house for kids, plus zumba and gymnastics celebrations. the festival is on park road between girl bomb and howard avenues. it runs from 9:00 until 1:00 this afternoon. snazzy weather for that, right?
