dead. his parents even signing the organ donation papers then the unthinkable. >> all right. and the so-called dine & dash dater strikes again luring yet another woman to an expensive dinner. good morning, everybody. we're going to start things off with that volcano emergency in hawaii. overnight we learned at least 30 homes have now been destroyed. >> we have some new images this morning that show the lava surrounding more buildings burning a destructive path through neighborhoods. at times the lava spewing hundreds of feet into the air while the volcano emits toxic gas. >> and now scientists are warning the eruption could carry on for weeks. this morning, the fiery line of lava on hawaii's big island shows no signs of slowing. new drone video shows the lava spewing from the ground near the kilauea volcano.

>> it's bad. it's -- the toxic gases is bad, but the level of lava that is coming out of that fissure is bad. the volume of lava is bad. i mean, this whole thing is a bad situation. >> reporter: some of the lava fountains are shooting as high as 230 feet in the air, and that lava is burning everything in its path including cars and dozens of homes. >> still a shock and the memories kind of hit me hard seeing these photos of me and my brother in my backyard and now it's covered in ten feet of lava. >> reporter: at least 1,800 people have been forced to evacuate from two neighborhoods. abc's marci gonzalez is there. >> reporter: the biggest concern is with the sulfur dioxide fumes pouring into the air from the eruptions. the toxic fumes in the smoke engulfing those neighborhoods. >> reporter: hundreds of small earthquakes are also jolting the area of after a magnitude 6.9 quake, the largest to hit hawaii in more than 40 years. scientists warn the event is far from over and say more

earthquakes and eruptions are likely. and locals on the big island are comparing what's happening now to a lava flow back in 1955. that eruption lasted 3 months and covered 4,000 acres in lava. to washington where president trump's nominee to head the cia will meet with senators today amid reports that she offered to withdraw her nomination because of her record on torture. gina haspel has spent 33 years at the agency, and after 9/11 she was in charge of a detention center in thailand where at least one al qaeda suspect was waterboarded. a white house statement last night called haspel highly qualified, and she's expected to face some tough questions during her confirmation hearing this wednesday. now to rudy giuliani who is having a tough time coming to president trump's defense as he struggles to explain the time line in the stormy daniels' payoff and acknowledges the possibility of payments to other women. he's also making it clear that the president has not ruled out

pleading the fifth in the russia investigation. abc's arlette saenz has the latest from d.c. for us. good morning, arlette. >> reporter: kendis and diane, good morning. president trump and rudy giuliani spent a few hours at the president's golf course yesterday. we don't know exactly what they discussed, but this all comes as giuliani is in full damage control mode over his own statements about the president and stormy daniels. another round of cleanup duty for president trump's attorney rudy giuliani. >> right now i'm at the point where i'm learning, and i can only -- i can't prove that. i can just say it's rumored. >> reporter: the damage control comes after he revealed mr. trump repaid his personal attorney for that $130,000 hush payment to adult film star stormy daniels despite the president denying he knew of the payment. >> did you know about the $130,000 payment to stormy daniels? >> no. >> reporter: appearing on "this week," giuliani said he's not actually aware of when the president learned about the payment to daniels. >> why did the president deny any knowledge of the payments

when, in fact, he admitted the payments? >> i don't know when the president learned about it. >> reporter: and giuliani raised the possibility that similar payments were made to other women. >> did michael cohen make payments to other women for the president? >> i have no knowledge of that. but i would think if it was necessary, yes. >> reporter: stormy daniels' attorney fired back. >> the president had effectively an extramarital affair slush fund that was administered by michael cohen and that he would just be expected to take care of these things. >> reporter: giuliani also took aim at the russia investigation days after president trump said he'd like to sit down with robert mueller. >> i would love to speak. i would love to go. nothing i want to do more because we did nothing wrong. >> reporter: but if the president is subpoenaed to testify, giuliani says he may not comply. >> will you comply? >> well, we don't have to. he's the president of the united states. >> reporter: if the president does sit down with special counsel robert mueller, giuliani did not rule out of the possibility that the president

may take the fifth and, of course, the president's attorneys right now are advising him not to sit down for an interview with mueller. diane and kendis. >> it's been an interesting couple of days, indeed. arlette saenz in d.c., thank you. five people have been killed in a series of crashes on interstate 80 in nebraska. police say one of the drivers may have been on his phone. in the most serious crash, three people not wearing their seat belts were killed after being thrown from their car, and in another crash, police say a tractor trailer driver was killed after slamming into another truck. they believe he may have been texting. a manhunt is under way in missouri after what police are calling a deadly case of road rage. they say a 24-year-old air national guardsman, cody harter, got into a fight with another driver along a highway near kansas city after arguing at a merge point. now, witnesses say the suspect stabbed harter, jumped back into his vehicle and took off. harter's family is now making an

several days, trenton was brain dead and barely breathing. his parents faced with a difficult decision, they signed the papers to donate his organs. >> kids needed organs that matched. it was unfair to keep bringing him back because it was just damaging his organs even more. >> reporter: but a day before doctors were set to pull the plug, trenton started coming back. >> i was walking down -- it was more like an open field, walking straight. there's no other explanation but god. >> reporter: slowly but surely trenton is making strides beyond what anyone expected. >> all right. >> he's a miracle, and he just amazes everybody. every day he does more and more. >> reporter: and despite all that, the young kid still has a great sense of humor. >> i said i could turn my head sideways and put salsa in there and eat chips and dips out of my head. >> but his recovery is not without a struggle. trenton has lost 50 pounds and

is suffering from seizures and nerve pain. the president of the university of florida is apologizing for how some students were treated at graduation. they were dancing on stage during the ceremony and then hurried along and pushed offstage by a school employee. he was accused of only shoving african-american graduates. the school president calls their treatment inappropriately aggressive. and a california man is demanding an apology after an off-duty officer accused him of stealing and pulled a gun on him. jose arreola had just paid $1.19 for a pack of mentos just before the officer walked into the store wearing street clothes. when he put the candy in his pocket, the officer drew his gun then ordered him to leave the mentos and get out. >> he looked at me and right away he thought, you know, i was a thief, i'm stealing it and nothing -- nothing i said convinced him. >> the clerk had to tell the

officer three times that arreola had paid for the candy. the police department says it's investigating. a notorious dine & dash suspect has struck again in southern california. paul gonzalez is accused of meeting at least four women for dates and then leaving them to pay the restaurant bill. now, during the most recent incident, a restaurant manager confronted gonzalez who immediately fled. the restaurant did not force the woman to pay that bill. >> swipe left, ladies. >> uh-huh. in the nba playoffs the cavaliers and celtics could both advance with wins tonight. meanwhile, the rockets are one win away from advancing after their 100-87 victory last night over the utah jazz. let's go to hockey now where the las vegas golden knights have advanced to the western final. they are only the third team to make it this far in the playoffs during their first season. not bad. >> and many thought that hockey would not survive in vegas. they're doing awesome. the bruins were eliminated from the playoffs after losing to the lightning, and brad marchand kept his tongue to himself. hallelujah.
