it collided with the ambulance heading south on hesperian. there were a total of five people involved in the crash. four people inside the ambulance and one person inside the audi. officials have confirmed at least one fatality. a 74-year-old woman who was initially being transported in the ambulance due to a medical emergency did not survive her injuries in the crash. now, that is new information just into the newsroom this afternoon. back here live at the scene, no word on the conditions of the other four people hurt in the collision. they were taken to eden medical center in castro valley. this intersection will be closed for a while. no word yet on the estimated time of reopening. but we'll continue to gather more details and bring them to you on air and online at abc7news.com. for now, we're live in san lorenzo, i'm chris nguyen, abc 7

news. chris, thanks very much. two san francisco employees taken to the hospital after pepper spray went off inside a building at the facility. the fire department says it was an accidental discharge on the assembly line about noon. seven others treated for symptoms at the scene. tens of thousands of uc health care workers are on strike. the strike began today and goes through wednesday. at stake, wages, as well as job security. >> care for thousands of patients has been affected by the strike. >> lyanne melendez is live. lyanne? >> reporter: right now we're having a little bit of a dinner break, if you will. but ucsf did have an update about 30 minutes ago. they had a good day, they say. remember, they had to cancel thousands of procedures and appointments so they say they hired a lot more people than

what they actually needed and sent some people home. tomorrow will be a little bit more challenging because the nurses union will join the strike. more than 12,000 procedures and appointments at ucsf medical center alone had to be canceled and rescheduled because of this three-day strike by the american federation of local 3299, they are the kus towedians, security guards and cooks and anyone for patient who is not a doctor or a nurse. >> this is about a powerful message that workers stand against inequality and against outsourcing, period. >> he knows about outsourcing. before landing a staff position with ucsf, he was an independent contractor at the medical center. >> the pay wage is a lot -- it's a lot different. so it's like, you know, you could go from making minimum wage and then now you can go to making 20-something an hour.

>> the union claims the most vulnerable are people of color and women. >> i see ucsf contractors who come in and they're still on medi-cal. they're gedding food stamps and welfare. that's not right, they're doing the same work that permanent employees are doing. they should be compensated and have the same pension and benefits. >> the union refused to talk about salary negotiations. but uc did. saying the union wants raises of nearly 20% over three years. the hospital has offered 3% a year over four years. the union has a patient protection task force at the hospital so not all union workers are on the picket lines. ucsf has also hired outside support for these next three days. >> we are available for emergency surgeries. there are a couple today. we have a river transplant going on as we speak. >> reporter: because the nurses will be on strike tomorrow to show their support, the hospital

this continues to be a unique case. the first known incident of a fire burning so hot that it contaminates plastic pipes beneath. street. water agencies across the country are looking to see how santa rosa will be handling this problem. in fountain grove, those who survived take nothing for granted anymore. not even drinking water. he has it delivered. >> once a week or if we have to special request sometimes. >> water flows through the faucet. but they still can't drink it. among 350 lots where heat from the fires contaminated pipes with benzene when the water agency reported the problem last march, they estimated that five miles of pipe needed replacing at a cost of $40 million. it would delay reconstruction of homes by two years. or maybe not. >> what we found is a solution to allow customers who are going to rebuild, again, see that they

will have a water supply at occupancy. >> they would do so by providing every home with a filtration system like he had purchased but not yet installed. >> to i trust it? i'm not going to use it. but i will always have my doubt, regardless. >> in recent weeks, testing showed that benzene levels have dropped somewhat. they will no doubt have to replace some but maybe not all five miles. >> i just had that put in. >> he likes the idea of the it filtration system. he wants it installed sooner than later he's trying to save this prize winning yard. >> if i have to wait four or five months to have water, this stuff -- my lawnnd and stuff isn't going to survive. i want to expedite that. >> rudy should find out tomorrow if the city will approve his request to put that filtration system in early. but compared to what we reported here six weeks ago, a major

three people in custody after a police chase that ended in a crash in alamo. the suspects are accused of stealing power tools from a home depot. the chase reached speeds of up to 100 miles an hour until the suspects crashed. the suspects ran but were all found and taken into custody. the senior ball ended on a sour note in pleasant hill. police say the students returned to college park high school early saturday morning to find their cars were broken into. 37 in all. the ball was held off campus. police are not saying what was stolen. anyone with information is asked to call the pleasant hill police department. customer satisfaction with b.a.r.t. has been at a low. >> we want to know what you think b.a.r.t. should focus on. modernizing facilities, crime and safety. what about clen i necessary? >> go to our website and vote. you can see the results in real time. the board of directors will

after training with sacramento area inmates for months. >> the national park ranger service has contacted us and was interested in getting some horses so they could use them for patrol, which is pretty historic because that's never been done that we know of. >> drifter and sand man arrived in early april. the two mustangs trained for two months in the wild horse training program. >> there's 70,000 -- >> joseph mize ner says they get them from the bureau of la management, he trains them al g alongside the inmates to sell them to law enforcement officers. >> put basic training, foundation, walk, trot, lope, pick up their feet. load them on to the trailer. that's done with inmates that never touched a horse in their life. >> despite breaking away from the inmates, the training continues at the park. rangers use the horses to regulate traffic and conduct rescue operations so they have to get them used to the park's busy atmosphere. >> getting them out, getting exposure and getting them near
