as of me. they walked off the job in this morning, including those at ucsf. officials say the walkout forced the cancellation of 1200 appointments and more than 300 surgeries. union leaders say they called the strike after one year of stalled contract talks. >> they want to raise health care premiums, raise the retirement age. but most importantly, they want to outsource more jobs. >> thursday, we'll welcome everybody back. i think the people have to do what they have to do. hopefully, everybody will get back to the bargaining table. >> uct hired outside support to keep the facility open overt next three days. they represent 25,000 employees, including statewide. including custodians, lab technicians and nurse aides. >> while there were no problems at ucsf. there was trouble for strikers outside ucla. three people suffered injuries

when they were hit by an suv as they blocked the street near west wood plaza and la kont avenue. you can see one man holding on to the hood of the vehicle. the driver was arrested. there is fallout from the uc walkout. california senator camilla harris will not be the commencement speaker at this saturday's graduation ceremony at uc berkeley. harris was booked for months to deliver a commencement address at cal. but her office says she's canceled the engagement saying she won't attend because of the speaker boycott called by the striking unions. harris' office released a statement saying she wishes them success for the future. they are bright young leaders and our country is counting on them. >> you've heard some suspects are slick enough to slip away from police. a home invasion robbery suspect was slick from hiding in a barrel filled with restaurant grease. abc 7 news reporter david lieu has details of a most unusual

officer-involved shooting. >> there was a home invasion robbery in downtown san jose. they confronted young suspects. one 17 and one 18 years old. the 18-year-old identified as ezekiel flores was spotted by an officer getting out of this 55-gallon barrel behind a restaurant next door. it was filled with grease from grilling beef and chicken all day. he ordered him to drop the gun. >> the suspect looked at the officer, did not drop the gun. at this point the officer discharged his weapon at the suspect. the officer lost sight of the suspect behind a large catering truck. >> the 21-year veteran appears to have shot at least four times. four bullet holes went through this fence. a cardboard menu board behind the mexican kitchen.

drunk driver slammed into his car on 880 in hayward. >> i appreciate memorials such as this. this will outlive all of this. it will outlive us by capturing and recreating and conveying the memory of those men and women who have served us to the ultimate price. >> those officers' names will be permanently added in bronze to the memorial monument along with the names of 1600 others killed in the line of duty. a former sheriff's deputy accused of having sex with inmates appeared in court again today. patrick moorsman pleaded not guilty to four felony counts of unlawful sex acts with two inmates. authorities say the incidents took place in a jail cell at the west county tea tension facility in richmond during his shift on march 31st. moorsman is facing a possible maximum sentence of five years in state prison.

with another court appearance set for tomorrow, new details are coming out about 49er linebacker rueben foster's case. he's facing domestic violence as well as other charges for the february incident, though his accuser recently recanted her story. the sacramento bee went through the police report and said he did smash the woman's cell phone which happend on one other occasion. a friend of foster was staying at the house and said he didn't see any argument or fight. officers did find two guns inside which led to a felony charge for foster. they reported a strong smell of marijuana also. police arrested three men suspected of shoplifting power tools from a home depot after a short pursuit. you can see where the chase ended. right there off of i-680 and stone valley road. the suspect's car crashed there off highway 680 about four miles from the site on crow canyon road.

26-year-old gaines and hooper and 31-year-old williams ran from the vehicle, but officers quickly apprehended them. all three face grand theft and conspiracy charges. california's primary is officially on june 5th. but you can cast your ballots starting today. there is a slight change this year. everyone registered to vote will receive a vote bay mail ballot this year. people can vote in person at a voting center. those are replacing the traditional polling centers. you must register by may 21st in a couple of weeks. mail-in ballots have to be postmarked on or before election day. they must be received by june 8th in order to be accepted. now, you can meet the candidates in some of the biggest races this june. you can find them by going to abc7news.com and choosing the politics section. located at 27th and north
