terry moran has the latest. >> reporter: this is really good news. we just received word that plane, has now landed in tokyo, those three american citizens onboard. they're now free men. this is good news. the suspense and the agony are over for the families for those three american citizens arrested, detained in north korea, by the government of kim jong-un. good news for prospect for success for that all-important summit being planned in june for president trump and kim jong-un. whether this is some kind of kin call employ by kim jong-un or good will gesture this is a huge success for donald trump. this morning, president trump personally tweeting out the good news. i'm pleased to inform you that secretary of state mike pompeo is in the air and on his way back from north korea with the 3

wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. they seem to be in good health. the president adding moments later, secretary pompeo and his "guests" will be landing at andrews air nors base at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. all three korean-american linked to religious institutions. a korean businessman and christian missionary, arrested in 2015 and sentenced to ten years hard labor for subversion. kim was arrested in 2017 for committing hostile acts. and kim hak-song, 55, a teacher at the same university detained in summer of 2017. it's u.s. secretary of state pompeo who's meeting with kim jong-un before the upcoming

trump/kim jong-un summit. for years, going back to the rule of kim's father, north korea has engaged in hostile diplomacy. releasing them in bargaining chips in standoff over its nuclear program. quite a scene at 2:00 in the morning with president trump greeting these hostages, these american citizens returning home at joint base andrews. it's worth remembering, this is a very different homecoming than otto warmbier had, he came home savagely beaten. his family has filed suit against north korea. with the release of these men the last obstacle really remaining between open talks between to president trump and kim jong-un, it has been removed. a sticking point obviously in any negotiations and now it seems that this was all part of kim jong-un's plan, first when

he take s control, race to ballistic capability and get from under these economic sanctions. the intesweetener to release th hostages. robin and michael. >> all right, terry. michael president trump making the announcement, tweeting about the release. let's go to our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega in washington with the latest. >> reporter: the president is the one who actually broke this news with those tweets and within the last few minutes we received an official statement from the white house. i want to read you what they're saying. their words are interesting. quote, president trump appreciates leader kim jong-un's action to release these american citizens and views this as a positive gesture of goodwill. the white house thanking kim jong-un for this. again, the president is saying

that these three americans appear to be in good health, they walked on to this airplane that's now in japan without any assistance. the reaction in washington is down right kel bcelebratory. as terry just said, this comes ahead of that summit that the white house is now working with north korea to plan but all of this, on top of the other big international head line, the president pulling out of the iran deal angering some of our closest allies in europe. overnight iranian lawmakers burning a paper american flag after president trump declared the u.s. is pulling out of that iranian nuclear deal. >> this was a horrible one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made. >> reporter: around the world the outrage was immediate. former president obama who negotiated the deal coming off the sidelines with a scathing

public statement calling president trump's announcement, so misguided, a serious mistake and warning the united states could eventually be left with a losing choice between a nuclear-armed iran or another war in the middle east, and he added this dig saying, he hopes americans support strong, principled, fact-based and unifying leadership. with the stroke of a pen president trump unraveling his predecessor's signature foreign policy achievement. >> the united states no longer makes empty threats. when i make promises i keep them. >> reporter: declaring he is reimposing tough sanctions, not just on iran, but also on foreign companies doing business there, including our european allies. and he issued this threat. >> if the regime continues its nuclear aspirations, it will have bigger problems than it has ever had before. >> reporter: the move causing a major split with britain, france and germany.

those close allies banding together and in a show of force saying, the deal makes the world a safer place, and that they have regret and concern about the american withdrawal. vowing to stay in the deal. this as iran -- [ speaking a foreign language ] >> reporter: -- is now suggesting it could be free to restart its nuclear program. all not all international outrage. . the fallout on this one is just the beginning. it's the exact opposite reaction to the news of these three american detainees coming home. president trump will be there at 2:00 in the morning when they land. >> cecilia, thank you.

let's go to our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas with more. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. stormy daniels' attorney is saying follow the money and claiming that michael cohen received hundreds of thousands of dollars from a company tied to a russian billionaire with links to putin. >> it's a stormy day. >> reporter: this morning, attorney michael avenatti waging a public campaign against donald trump alleging a connection between an ally of vladimir putin and michael cohen, president trump's former personal attorney. avenatti releasing a document that his firm prepared claiming that a company called columbus nova transferred $500,000 in installments to a bank account maintained by cohen. the american owned firm has ties to a company controlled by russian oligarch viktor vekselberg. >> mr. vekselberg has had long, very large investments in russia, in the energy sector and he is there for very close, and beholding to the government.

>> reporter: according to avenatti, columbus nova made a series of eight payments to a holding company established by cohen known as essential consuls. he used that for a hush agreement with storm before the 2016 election. "the new york times" reported earlier this year that special counsel robert mueller's team has interviewed vekselberg. but an attorney with columbus nova said last night that the company's ownership is entirely american, that vekselberg had nothing to do with business with cohen. according to avenatti's memo, unconfirmed by abc news, essential consultants received a total of $4.4 million including wire transfers from a number of major corporations doing business inside the united states. among them, at&t which wired cohen payments totaling $200,000. last night, at&t, which has a major merger with time warner pending, is being challenged by the justice department, did not

dispute the transaction saying essential consultants is one of the several firms we enfajed in 2017 to provide insights into understanding the new administration. they did no legal or lobbying work for us and the contract ended in december 2017. cohen whose home and offices have been recently raided by the fbi has not been charged with any crime. both he and his attorney did not respond to abc news' request for comment on avenatti's claims. throughout mueller's investigation they have maintained that cohen has done nothing improper. it's unclear exactly how avenatti got access to those banking records but he's maintaining that they are authentic and deserving of investigation by prosecutors. george. okay, pierre, let's start there with michael avenatti. he joins us right now. >> morning. >> there's been some speculation your records that the documents you produced were based on suspicious activity reports at the treasury department. is that how you got them?

>> i won't get into how we got the information. what i will say is we stand behind it 100% as of this morning, "the new york times" has confirmed the accuracy of what we released. nbc has confirmed the accuracy of what we released and i think there's been one or two other independent news organizations that independently referred or confirmed what we released in the report. we stand behind that 100%. there is no question it's accurate and let me just say this to the extent it's not accurate, michael cohen and the president can clear this up this morning very easily. michael cohen should release the bank statements from this account, this single account from october of '16 until april of this year, so he can disclose to the american people what money was received or not received. >> i'll tell you what has been confirmed though. at&t has confirmed the payments and novartis has confirmed the payments and columbia nova has confirmed the payments -- what is illegal about that? michael cohen, an attorney for the president, close to the president sets up a firm in

washington, d.c., gives strategic consulting advice. what's wrong with that? >> wait a minute, we don't know what advice he was giving. here's what we do know. each company has given a different reason for retaining michael cohen. real estate, business consulting, health care consulting, the list goes on and on. michael cohen -- >> okay, but nothing wrong with any of that. >> no, there may, in fact, be something wrong -- >> what would that be? >> for the following reason. he is not a registered lobbyist. he hasn't made disclosures related to that activity. >> at&t he wasn't -- they didn't hire him to lobby. >> what did they hire him for then? it's unclear. clearly it's unclear. in fact, the more you dig, the more stories we hear from these companies. here's the other problem. if he is taking money from a foreign national, that could pose a significant legal problem for him as it relates to taking dollars from overseas companies, et cetera. so we don't know where this ends but it doesn't spell right, george. >> you said could right there. what we heard there from vekselberg and from columbus nova is that he did not have anything to do with the hiring of michael cohen. this was not his money.

>> all right, well -- >> any evidence to the contrary? >> yeah, we have significant evidence to the contrary. let me say this, we have not released all the evidence that we have. i think any claim by columbus they have no ties to nova -- >> no ties to the hiring of michael cohen. >> well, no, but they also tried to claim last night they had no ties to renovo and are a completely separate company unaffiliated. we know that's untrue. i think are 45 s.e.c. filings where they are linked. george, look. something doesn't smell right, and if it's aboveboard and there is no improper conduct, michael cohen should release the bank the bank records for for the american people to see. if we're wrong, we're wrong, but, george, we're not wrong. >> and in your first tweet you raised the possibility these were reimbursement for the stormy daniels payment. that's speculation, correct? >> no, i don't think it's speculation. i think there's a substantial basis for assuming that to be the case. >> but what is that? what's the evidence here? >> i'll tell you the substantial basis among other things.

first of all, you have the payment to stormy daniels on october 27th of 2016. to the best of our knowledge there was very little if any income that came into that account before the first nova payment or deposit in january of 2017. >> yeah, but the -- here's the counter possibility. the intervening event is the election of president trump. michael cohen sees a business opportunity there that could easily have nothing to do with the stormy daniels payment. >> let them disclose the records, george. i mean, they have the records in their possession. if there is nothing to hide, why do they continue to hide this information, hide the involvement? i mean, look. the president ran on this campaign of draining the swamp, that lobbyists won't be involved, special interests won't be involved, et cetera. now, you have the right hand of the president, right hand of mr. trump in january of 2017 all of a sudden starts taking all this money from all these multinational corporations for god knows what and the american people deserve to know what it was for. >> but right now you can't say

what it was for and you have no evidence of a crime? >> well, it's not our job to prosecute michael cohen or mr. trump. we have been about a search for the truth. that's what we're going to continue to do. >> michael avenatti, thanks very much. >> thank you. >> michael. >> thank you, george. now to new concerns about that volcano emergency in hawaii. two more cracks opening up spewing lava and those toxic fumes spreading. abc's kayna whitworth is in hawaii's big island and some are opening up on major highways. >> reporter: yeah, michael, that's right. they're only getting wider. it was a really scary day for residents yesterday because many of them were allowed back in to gather belongs, and that's when two new cracks in the earth opened up, spewing lava. sending some people running from the area. so right now we have a total of 14 fissures destroying nearly 40 homes. we lost another one last night. they are under almost more than 140 acres of lava. and that's -- those are incredible numbers here.

it's also creating new air quality concerns because each time a new fissure opens up it sends that sulfur dioxide into the air, and right now it looks like the activity is marching west, and that's what's creating those new cracks in major highways, michael. >> and kayna, we're looking at those images and it makes you wonder how will they ever be able to clean up after all of this? >> reporter: i know, michael. it's really interesting. so in some cases, i actually saw lava rock piled about 40 feet high in those neighborhoods so in that case they would actually have to blast the lava rock away and then bull doze it but some experts told me a lot of times it's actually easier for them to just pave new roads right over that lava rock. these lava flows really become a permanent fixture of this island, michael. >> thank you so much, kayna. wow, you never think about that. >> long road ahead of them. now to ginger with flooding and evacuations in montana and severe weather for the midwest, ginger. >> yes. mandatory evacuations in parts

this morning, a cold case turned red hot. investigators in michigan tipped off that this may be the burial site of up to six young girls some missing for almost four decades. one of those girl, kimberly king who vanished in 1979. the 12-year-old last seen in her best friend's backyard. >> kim actually like hopped the back fence and didn't go home and then i just went in my house. so the next morning i was expecting her to be back at my house. >> reporter: police think king and the other five girls were killed by this man, arthur ream, the child predator is already in jail for the 1986 kidnap and murder of 13-year-old cindy zarzycki. this video shows ream pointing police to the location of her remains. >> all she had to do was go up north avenue, and it's right there. >> reporter: ream giving the detectives details in this chilling interrogation video. >> was she wearing a purse?

>> yeah. >> reporter: zarzycki found in these woods ten years ago but the site not fully searched. this empty open field once hiding in the woods. so in the '80s, this was woods. >> all woods, farmland. there was nothing out here back then. >> reporter: police say kellie brownlee and kim larrow who disappeared in the 1980s, could also be found there. >> hopefully bring closure. >> reporter: kimberly's sister connie will never stop looking. >> it's the most important thing until we find her. it will always be the most important thing in my life. >> reporter: now investigators have interviewed arthur ream several times since this case was re-opened. they have said he failed a polygraph test but they have not said what the specifics of that test were, robin. >> all right, eva, thank you so much. michael. >> thank you.

now to that panic on the tarmac smoke filling the cabin of a delta plane in denver last night causing them to scramble out the emergency exit and david kerley has the story. good morning to you, david. >> reporter: good morning, michael. that plane just landed from detroit. it was heading to the gate when suddenly the passengers see and smell something inside the jetliner. this was the terrifying scene moments after the delta flight touched down in denver suddenly smoke in the cabin. passengers screaming as that smoke moves through the jetliner. >> flight attendants, evacuate. >> reporter: right there on the taxiway the evacuation order for the 146 passengers. >> everyone kind of looked around and the flight attendant said there's smoke. >> reporter: the emergency slides deploy at the doors and passengers jump. at the exits over the wings passenger getting out and huddling on the wings. rachel naftel posting these pictures, tweeting these, feeling faint and sick, scariest

we have those stunning new allegations about president trump's formal personal lawyer michael cohen about receiving $500,000 in payments from a firm linked to a russian billionaire. pierre thomas is back with more on that. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. that's right. stormy daniels' attorney says if you follow the money, you'll find hundreds of thousands of dollars flowing to michael cohen from a company with ties to a russian billionaire. avenatti releasing a document that his firm prepared claiming that a company called columbus nova transferred $500,000 in installments into a bank account maintained by cohen. that company is tied to russian oligarch viktor vekselberg. avenatti told you just a little while ago, george, this all does not pass the smell test. >> something doesn't smell right. and if it's aboveboard and there's no improper conduct, michael cohen should release the bank statements and the bank records for the american people to see and if we're wrong, we're wrong. but, george, we're not wrong. >> reporter: an attorney with columbus nova said last night the company's ownership is entirely american and that the russian billionaire had nothing

to do with the hiring of cohen. cohen whose office and home were recently raided by the fbi has not been charged with any crime. he and his attorney did not respond to our requests on avenatti's claims, but have maintained that cohen has done nothing wrong, george. >> okay, pierre thomas, thanks very much. michael. now to that breaking news for our viewers in the west. president trump announcing those three american detainees have been released from north korea, on their way back to the u.s. with secretary of state pompeo. terry moran has been tracking all the latest. >> reporter: this is a diplom diplomatic triumph for president trump. it's moment of joy and relief for those families for those three american citizens arrested and detained for years by north korea, now freed. secretary of state pompeo after meeting with kim jong-un brought those americans on board his airplane. they're en route to the united states.

president trump tweeting, secretary of state pompeo and his guests will be landing at andrews air force base. at 2:00 a.m. this is not just good news for these men and president trump but for success at that upcoming summit in june. army specialist brooks lindsay got a pass to return to the great state of mississippi to return for the birth of their child. but haley experienced complications, had to give birth right away and brooks immediately tried to catch a plane. it was delayed, so that's when facetime came to the rescue. and the expressions on his face, priceless. he got to watch his little boy be born and haley said the flight delay was actually a blessing. if he was on the plane he never would have seen that special moment. when he got there and seeing him hold his little daughter, millie, he said, she was perfect. and everybody was cheering.

you know, after our story aired tuesday we heard a lot from parents saying even with filters they're still having trouble with inappropriate content adding, now i'm the bad mom? youtube now says parents can use a restricted mode setting but when we tried it out for ourselves, the results were shocking. >> the best thing ever. >> reporter: youtube says more than a billion users watch more than a billion videos every day. >> youtube is the most popular online destination for children under 13. >> reporter: these kids ages 10 to 13 say they watch hours of youtube every day. do you think youtube does enough to restrict inappropriate material? >> no. >> how come? >> well, like whenever it says verify age, you just have to sign into an e-mail. >> reporter: on youtube's main site the terms of service say it's not intended for children under the age of 13. >> hi, i'm murray from "sesame street." >> reporter: yet, that site has channels like "sesame street," and "peppa pig."

>> youtube wants kids on youtube and for them to say anything else is completely disingenuous. >> reporter: "gma" examined two tools that parents can use to filter content for kids on their main site. >> is it wrong for a kid to be doing this? >> reporter: we created an account for a 14-year-old so age restricted content would be screened out and turned out restricted mode to filter out potentially mature content. even with these restrictions, we found sexual content interlaced with videos of people playing their own customized versions of popular children's games. "minecraft" and "roblox." we showed the results. we're watching -- >> in restricted mode. >> reporter: as we watch we see youtube referring us to more videos on the sidebar. >> "minecraft" xxx. >> the algorithm is saying you want to see more and more of these things. >> reporter: youtube told us protecting families is our priority. we created the youtube kids app to offer parents a safer

alternative for their children but on youtube kids, "gma" found a supermario logan video. >> all righty, kids, it's time for -- >> goofy the dragon. >> reporter: it's a puppet talking about drugs and using a gun. >> if you were peeking in, what would you see your child watching? that one is particularly deceptive to parents. >> reporter: the video was upfor weeks before youtube took it down. youtube would say, well, people should just flag bad content and we'll filter it out. >> if a 4-year-old has already seen a really disturbing video, then that is too late. >> reporter: youtube says it has since created more parental controls on youtube kids so only videos screened by human moderators can be viewed. parents have to turn them on themselves. and we found they do appear to work. now, most of the videos we found were either taken down or placed behind filters but youtube has left several of the "minecraft" and "roblox" videos without age restrictions. those are the ones manipulated
