and i believe medicare must be empowered to negotiate the price of drugs. california values senator dianne feinstein a medical emergency in the air becoming a real issue on the ground at san jose's largest hospital this morning. medical transport personnel sickened at valley medical center after air lifting a patient exposed to some chemicals. thanks for joining us. everyone exposed and the helicopter landing pad at valley medical center decontaminated. abc7 news reporter matt keller live at the hospital with the latest. matt? >> reporter: unusual night, unusual morning here at valley medical center. ambulances diverted for about an hour overnight and the helicopter shut down for

decontamination with the emergency department stayed open the entire time. an unusual scene in san jose overnight. two flight crew members from the medical helicopter and two emergency department staff being decontaminated in a parking lot. >> we are a 24/7 emergency department and well equipped. >> reporter: firefighters say they were called to a production facility late last night. a worker had chemicals splashed on him and decontaminated and put on a medical helicopter to san jose and during the flight crew members reported respiratory issues and itchy faces. when they landed, they were patients, as well. they started the decontamination protocol. firefighters didn't know the exact chemicals original patient was exposed to but narrowed it down to two acids and two bases that could have mixed together. >> it was stuff for d econ of

soap and water and did that with personnel and get the patients cleaned up. >> reporter: they say the four medical workers decontaminated, evaluated by doctors and appeared to be okay. they will continue to be monitored. >> decontamination is one of those thing that is we regularly train our emergency department staff on and they're well prepared to handle these kinds of situations. >> reporter: we contacted the original patient's employer for an update on the condition and yet to hear back. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc7 news. >> thank you. three american citizens detained for years in north korea are on their way home to the u.s. right now. their release by north korea seen on the world stage as the latest sign that the country may be on the brink of historic diplomatic relations with the u.s. and south korea. abc's maggie ruely has detailed. >> reporter: three americans are now on the way home from north korea. this morning, the president

tweeting the news and confirming that all three men on board are in good health. yesterday, the president revealing that secretary of state pompeo heading to north korea for a second time to negotiate the release and make plans for a future meeting between the president and north korean leader kim jong-un. >> in preparation for my upcoming meeting with kim jong-un plans are being made, relationships are building. >> reporter: this morning, the president also confirming that his own meeting with kim now has a date and place. as we wait for that historic face to face meeting, the world's watching the arrival of those three men on u.s. soil, all korean american, two were teaching in pyongyang. >> it is hard for the family. soon he will be a grandfather. we'd like to share that moment with him. >> reporter: seized by the north korean government between 2015 and 2017 accused of various crimes against the state. each was sentenced to years of hard labor and brutal north

korean prison camps. the president tweeting the former three detainees to land in washington an will be there to greet them. the family of one of the men tony kim released a statement thanking president trump and the other that is worked to bring him home. they also ask for prayers for the people of north korea and for the release of other prisoners still being held. abc news, new york. grief counselors and psychologists on hand at an east bay high school where a student was found dead in the swimming pool yesterday. amy hollyfield shows us a memorial for the 15-year-old boy is growing. >> reporter: basketball shoes now line the gate outside the swimming pool at san ramon alley high school. the basketball team left them as a tribute to the teammate ben curry found dead at the bottom of the school's pool yesterday. the gate is a memorial to the 15-year-old and as students arrived for class today they stopped by to remember him and

console each other. >> it's been definitely a very eerie silence i suppose you could describe it as. there's just been a really kind of mourning tone. >> reporter: the school district activated the crisis team and brought in a full contingent of counselors and support staff. >> we will have teachers address students so they know there's support available and it's a different day for the students and staff and we're here to support them. >> reporter: they have advised teachers to encourage kids the talk to someone and on the lookout for students struggling. >> last year my cousin knew him pretty well. and he was kind of silent in the car ride up and sad. >> reporter: as teenagers arrived with flowers and added to the memorial students said it's obvious how much they care about each other. >> i think it's a little gray mood today. but i think it'll definitely bring us closer together as a school. >> reporter: police have not

defender jeff adachi claiming someone sketched an isis flag on the locker with the message go back. meantime, the oakland police department has confirmed that the officer was dismissed from the oakland police academy. for the third day in a row hospital employees with the university of california hitting the picket lines. the california nurse's association technical employees joined the picket line yesterday. they want higher wages and an end to outsourcing a. spokesperson said that the strim will not change its financial situation adding that the salary and benefit demands are excessive. this is expected to be the last of the short temporary strike. a wild scene just outside of the caldacut tunnel. a car was disabled. another driver stopped to help. a tow truck came along. that's when things got crazy. one of the drivers got into an

altercation with the tow truck driver. someone in one of the vehicles pulled out a gun and fired twice into the air. no one was hit. the chp stopped traffic in the tunnel. everything cleared up around 4:00 a.m. but, boy, trying to get through before that, you were caught in the backup. new developments this morning in the search for a new l.a. police chief. william scott is one of three finalists for the job according to the l.a. times. the mayor has said he'll interview them and then do a second round of interviews with some members of the city council there and other two are lapd veteran commanders. scott was a deputy commander before coming to san francisco two years ago. the mayor said he expects to choose a new chief by the end of the month. happening today, state regulators are expected to give solar power a big boost. the state energy commission is set to vote on rules of solar

boeing will lose billions. the treasury department said licenses to sell in iran will be revoked. in iran, lawmakers burned a paper u.s. flag as well as a symbolic copy of the iran deal. iran's parliament speaker later told assembly that president trump, quote, does not have the mental capacity to deal with issues. and new developments in the stormy daniels saga. her lawyer now claims to have documents showing a company with ties to a russian billionaire gave money to a fund maintained by president trump's long time personal lawyer michael cohen, supposedly the same fund to spay $130,000 to daniels in hush money. michael avenatti released documents showing columbus nova transferred half million dollars into the account of cohen. he claims columbus nova has ties to a company controlled by a russian oligarch.

abc news has not independently verified the documents. >> if he is taking money from a foreign national, that could pose a significant legal problem for him. >> they're saying he had nothing to do with cohen. new this morning, the confirmation hearing began for the president's nominee for cia chief. senators wanted to know from gina haspel what she would do if president trump ordered her to waterboard a detainee. she said she doesn't believe the president would do that but she would not under any circumstances restore an interrogation program at the cia. haspel was this charge of a secret cia center after 9/11 in which terror suspects were brutally interrogated. nbc says there's no culture of harassment in its news division. that conclusion was made following an internal investigation that began at matt lauer was fired. he was let go in november after

stronger sea breeze that's going to touch all of our neighborhoods and bring just about all of us a cooler day. in fact, see the clouds, they had some mist to them. we had measurable drizzle above 1,000 feet in many areas of the bay and not many of us live that high. so we didn't have to deal with it much and crossing the golden gate or the coast you had it. a lot of 60s out there until you get to the coast and san francisco. upper 50s right now. this is the way it looks right now. a lot of sunshine out there. mostly sunny, breezy and cooler. not as humid nor or as cloudy tonight and cooler than this morning and a warming trend into mom's weekend and maybe not what we thought yesterday. a look at the bay and a breezy one today. west winds up to about 35 miles per hour. you can see out over the coast it's going to be a brisk day, also. let's see what it does to the temperatures. upper 60s to low 70s through

most of the south bay. mid-70s morgan hill and gilroy. san mateo about 66. look at the temperatures at the coast. only upper 50s today. low to mid-60s in petaluma 69 and then low to mid-70s. mid-60s to near 70 along the east bay shore and if you're moving to the inland neighborhoods low to mid-70s in most neighborhoods. a day game at the coliseum. 62, warming to 65. just dropped my clicker there. haven't done that in a couple of months. we have temperature that is will be below average but breezy conditions under a mostly sunny sky. very strong sunshine. be careful there. a look at sfo where the fcc reporting delays about 54 minutes. call ahead. you can see that we have seasonal and breezy conditions at 4:00. 57 at the coast.
