good evening. thank you for joining us. we begin with breaking news. they're the symbols of a thawing relationship. three american prisoners held in north korea are now free and back on u.s. soil. and tonight they received a warm welcome home. an historic moment. three americans formerly held as prisoners in north korea now free. the president and first lady greeting them inside the plane before stepping outside for the world to see. a celebratory moment for the united states. >> they are really three incredible people. and the fact that we were able to get them out so soon was really a tribute to a lot of things, including a certain process that's taking place right now. and that process is very

important. so we will see what happens. we have a meeting scheduled in a very short period of time. you'll be hearing about it soon. we have the location set. and we will see if we can do something that people did not think was going to happen for many, many years. and a lot of bad things could have happened in between. so i just want to say this is a special night. >> reporter: the former prisoners of north korea releasing their first statement, saying, "we would like to express our deep appreciation to the united states government, president trump, secretary pompeo, and the people of the united states for bringing us home." the three former prisoners are korean-american. two of them detained last year. the third in prison since 2015. the americans were released after secretary of state mike pompeo met with kim jong un for 90 minutes in north korea to discuss plans for his upcoming summit with president trump. shortly after a north korean official came to pompeo's hotel to inform him the three have been granted amnesty but saying

it was a hard decision. the men boarded pompeo's plane, taking off at 8:42 p.m. local time. less than an hour after being released from custody. after a stop in japan then they headed to the u.s. the son of one of the detainees, tony kim, anticipating this moment, speaking with abc news in april. >> i think our family tries to take it day by day, try to stay positive. you know, we try to focus on maybe today he's going to be released. >> reporter: the detainees' release comes on the heels of the historic april meeting with the leaders of north and south korea, when they agreed to formally end the korean war and denuclearize the peninsula. denuclearization an issue on the table for president trump's upcoming summit with kim jong un. the location of that meeting still unknown. >> we'll have much more on the north korea situation on "gma" in the morning. but we turn now to the volcanic eruption in hawaii. we take you into the danger zone, where mass evacuations are still under way and homes being

melted by waves of lava. abc's marci gonzalez is on the ground with families whose nightmare has come true. >> reporter: it is a torrent of molten rock devouring everything in its path. part of the tropical paradise of hawaii's big island torn open. geysers of lava and ash spewing into the air. all from kilauea, one of six active volcanoes in hawaii. in some places lava reaching as high as 330 feet, higher than the statue of liberty's torch. people saying the sound was akin to a jet engine's roar. >> it was thunderous. it was just like whoo. >> the level of lava coming out of that fissure is bad. the volume of lava is bad. this whole thing is a bad situation. >> reporter: the lava reaching temperatures of nearly 2,000 degrees fahrenheit. so hot it can melt gold.

take a look at this time lapse video of a mustang bursting into flames as it's consumed. >> it's the lava from here going underground through here to the neighborhoods. >> that's right. >> reporter: that molten rock traveling underground and erupting through the earth. spewing out 20 mild away on the neighborhood of leilani estates. nearly 2,000 residents of this and one other community evacuated. >> i started to panic and just grabbing pictures. my mom's wedding gown. just baby photos. important things. >> reporter: we met woody keahai nelson at this roadblock hoping to go back in to pick up what he left when a friend showed him this video. >> memories of being in my back yard. it's hard. >> reporter: that giant wall of lava creeping through that yard closing in on his childhood

home. >> shock and the memories kind of hit me hard seeing photos of me and my brother in my back yard. now it's covered in ten feet of lava. >> holy [ bleep ]. >> reporter: this nightmare for this island began last week. >> holy [ bleep ]. >> reporter: earthquakes rattling the big island. and as the first cracks in the earth opened plumes of ash and smoke rose into the air. >> it was roaring sky high. it was incredible. it was fuming. it was roaring. it was thundering. rocks were flying out of the ground. >> reporter: those 15 open fissures exposing fiery magma overtaking neighborhood streets causing a week of mayhem. over the weekend people like chris klepps waited for hours in their vehicles. >> you've been out here all night long? >> i got out here about 3:00. and just sat and waited. >> what are you waiting for?

>> to see if i can get in. >> reporter: only to learn he isn't allowed back in. >> where the new fissures opened up it's right on the corner. i think it's heading toward us. we kind of gave up hope. >> reporter: today the situation on the ground in leilani estates is still volatile. authorities allowing some evacuees back in for a few hours at a time to gather their belongings. >> it doesn't seem real. >> reporter: raylene lairham and her son evacuated last week. >> it's almost like you can feel the lava flowing under you. >> reporter: one of authorities' concerns, the dangerously high levels of sulfur dioxide fumes in the community. the national guard is monitoring the toxic fumes. >> we're already well over what could be considered safe. >> reporter: pleading with residents to stay away. >> like choking on rotten eggs. it's really thick. it makes your eyes water, your throat hurts, everything hurts. your lungs literally ache. so you've got to just run. >> reporter: in all 36 structures, most of them homes, have been destroyed. more than 100 acres consumed by

the lava, and no one knows when it's going to end. >> could continue to flow for several weeks, several months, several days. several years. we don't know. the worry level is high right now. >> reporter: worry but a level of acceptance. locals saying this land belongs to the goddess of fire and volcanoes, pele. >> reporter: kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes, spewing lava since 1983. it's part of what drew 2 million tourists last year to hawaii volcanoes national park. >> wow. so yeah, just for some perspective, we are here on the edge of kilauea volcano. >> reporter: and that volcanic activity erupting outside of the park has been historically devastating. in 1990 the town of kalapana left buried under 50 feet of lava. in 1960 nearly the same in the town of kapoho. and today an explosion as rocks in the volcano's other crater crashed into the lava lake

perfect! make room for the judge! what's your dream? at ikea, we help you live it. make the dream yours. gifs are rapidly changing the way young people communicate. these are short video clips that are used online in place of complex thoughts or emotions. they're inherently one note, and now some experts worry they could be painting african-americans as caricatures instead of people. here's my "nightline" co-anchor dan harris. >> reporter: they're used in almost everything we do. gifs are a cultural obsession. >> there are thousands of ways to express yourself in three frames or less. most of us have seen the more famous gifs like this one, sometimes called white guy blinking.

or this one, called crying michael jordan. but some critics are concerned that communicating in short form leads us to stereotype and generalize entire swaths of the population. it's seen by some people as a form of cultural appropriation. this "new york times" video examined how gifs and memes can become a sort of digital blackface. >> women of color in particular are called on really frequently to express emotions for us. >> reporter: writer laura michele jackson says people outsource their emotions to gifs, in particular gifs of women of color such as oprah or the "real housewives of atlanta." >> your sass, your nonchalance, your fury, your delight. the internet likes things that are exaggerated. so when you already have a group of people that are stereotyped for being over the top, you know, you mate that with the internet and it just -- it goes viral all the time. >> reporter: she wrote about this in an article for "teen vogue," urging users to be cognizant of what we share and how we share.

have the best types and most representative gifs across all types of interests. >> after this racist meme found its way onto the platform the company had to make changes. >> how did that happen? >> that was a bug in our moderation filters. when we were alerted to that piece of content we took it down immediately, within minutes. and then we did an entire review of our entire moderation system. >> people can't get into your system if they're putting out racially charged -- >> no. >> the first gif was created 30 years ago and the first gif to go viral was the dancing baby. now there are millions of them. part of the reason, experts say, for the explosion in popularity in gifs is human impatient. scientists say the average human attention span for any one thing is 12 seconds. i mean, i never use them. does that mean i'm helplessly culturally illiterate? >> 55-year-old moms. it's pretty much universal now. i think being 46 isn't an excuse. >> what's the role?
