accused of being just your average pups. and get the story behind this bear hitting the drive-through for ice cream. and good morning on this thursday. let's get straight to the big breaking news from overnight. three americans held captive in north korea have now completed their journey home. >> they arrived at 3:00 a.m. eastern time at joint base andrews near washington, d.c. and president trump and the first lady were there to greet them. >> now, one of the men told reporters they were very, very happy and said being home is like a dream. abc's kenneth moton watched it all unfold from washington, and he joins us now. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. yes, incredible images in the early morning hours here in washington. president trump so excited to meet and welcome these ex-prisoners, he actually boarded their plane when it landed at joint base andrews. overnight the highly anticipated moment.

three korean-americans detained in north korea back in the u.s. welcomed by president trump. >> it was a very important thing to all of us to be able to get these three great people out. >> reporter: the ex-prisoners throwing up peace signs, a patriotic homecoming for the men who appear to be in good health. kim dong-chul sentenced to hard labor in north korea in 2015. kim hak-song and kim sang-duk last year. [ speaking a foreign language ] >> translator: yes, we were treated in many different ways. for me i had to do a lot of labor, but when i got sick, i was also treated by them. >> reporter: the release symbolic and a victory for president trump ahead of his planned summit with dictator kim jong-un. >> he was nice in letting them go before the meeting. i mean, frankly, we didn't think this was going to happen. >> reporter: secretary of state mike pompeo escorted the men to the u.s. he was in the north working out the details for the president's meeting with kim. a location and time now set.

one reported location singapore has been floated by president trump. the president focused on the goal of the historic summit, a denuclearized korean peninsula. >> my proudest achievement will be -- this is a part of it, but will be when we denuclearize that entire peninsula. this is what people have been waiting for for a long time. >> reporter: there's a trust factor at play when it comes to dealing with north korea but president trump says he believes president kim jong-un is ready to bring his country into the real world. the ex-prisoners are being evaluated and treated at walter reed medical center. diane and kendis. >> yeah, and they're greeted by their family members there, as well. kenneth, thank you. now to that new warning in hawaii. scientists say the kilauea volcano could soon launch molten boulders into the air weighing up to ten tons. an explosion near the summit caused a rockbed to crash into the lava lake below. you can see it form that

ash plume, actually the largest ash plume in kilauea in nearly a century. scientists say the conditions are similar to those in 1924 when an eruption sent ash and dust shooting into the air for 17 days. they say this time kilauea could launch boulders into the air and smaller rocks for several miles. and we're getting a closer look at some of the homes that were in the path of the eruption. some residents in the leilani estates may never be able to return. this is what their neighborhood looks like now, burned out by homes surrounded by mounds of rock. there's concern now that more communities could look like this soon. police are going door to door to evacuate residents near two volcanic vents. no sign of how far that lava will spread or when it will stop. another big concern is a power plant near the volcano. authorities are trying to move 50,000 gallons of gas stored at the plant. so far nearly 40 homes and buildings have been destroyed since the volcano started spewing lava last week. back to washington and the president's longtime personal lawyer, michael cohen, says a memo accusing him of receiving millions of dollars from various corporations is blatantly inaccurate.

but the drug company novartis and at&t both acknowledge that investigators from the special counsel robert mueller's office have questioned them about the payments. novartis says it shelled out more than a million dollars to cohen with promised access to the new administration. and two democratic senators are now calling for an investigation into those payments saying they could have been used to influence the president. senator john mccain is calling on his colleagues to vote against confirming gina haspel as the next director of the cia. mccain says he's disturbed by haspel's testimony on capitol hill wednesday. he says haspel failed to give a good explanation about her role overseeing the use of torture on terror suspects after 9/11. >> do you believe that the previous interrogation techniques were immoral? >> senator, i believe that cia officers to whom you refer -- >> please answer yes or no. >> senator, what i believe sitting here today is that i support the higher moral standard we have decided to hold ourselves -- >> can you please answer the

question? >> senator, i think i've answered the question. >> no, you have not. >> haspel did insist that she would not reinstate torture policies even if the president issued an order. as for senator mccain, he is not expected to vote on her nomination because he is undergoing treatment for brain cancer. overseas a major escalation of violence in the middle east overnight. israel is striking back after accusing iran of firing 20 rockets into the golan heights. now, israel intercepted some of the missiles and reported no casualties on its side. overnight the israelis struck dozens of iranian targets in syria and vowed not to allow iran to establish itself in that war-torn country. and inside iran itself, these scenes. citizens burning american flags as well as pictures of the president of the united states. it was part of the angry reaction following president trump's withdrawal from the nuclear deal. now, president trump warned iran not to restart its nuclear program saying it would face very severe consequences. time now for a look at your weather on this thursday morning. storms that have been pounding

the upper midwest produced at least one funnel cloud northwest of milwaukee. it damaged a few buildings and tore apart some trees. the heavy wind also triggered some power outages. the national weather service says it will announce today whether you can actually call that one officially a tornado. but looking at today's high temp, it'll be in the 80s from d.c. to miami. 60s here in new york. you're looking at triple digits in arizona, 105 in phoenix. pretty high, new mexico, too. 92 in albuquerque. well, coming up, why 30,000 people could soon be evicted from their nursing homes in one state. also ahead, houston, we have a problem. the men in space suits accused of posing as nasa employees. and the missing iron man costume worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. where did it go?

tens of thousands of people in louisiana could soon be getting eviction notices from their nursing homes. state lawmakers approved a budget eliminating four medicaid programs and those cuts mean 37,000 people who use medicaid to pay for their nursing home will no longer be eligible for benefits. the state's health secretary got emotional when talking about the cuts. >> we've really tried to underscore that these are real people. these are -- and we've told the stories, and it's just inaction so, unfortunately, we have to act, and it's not easy. this is not something we want to do. >> lawmakers have until july to find the money or the eviction

notices will go out. in the meantime, churches and social service organizations are being notified that some of those people will have nowhere else to go. federal investigators are looking into another deadly crash involving a tesla, this one in south florida. police say speed was likely the cause of that crash that killed two high school students. the car they were driving there had a lithium ion battery that burst into flames on impact. the ntsb says it wants to investigate how emergency crews responded to the fire. the battery in a car that crashed in california, by the way, reportedly reignited as well several times. a botched air drop has cost one soldier his army career. a general court-martial found sergeant john skipper intentionally destroyed three humvees. they crashed to the ground in germany two years ago. you can hear the sounds of an onlooker. now, skipper purposely cut the parachute cords holding the vehicles. each of them cost about $200,000. and a father and son

are now being accused of posing as astronauts to defraud a businessman. as punishment police in india paraded the men in space suits in front of cameras. they're accused of selling a piece of copper to that businessman for more than $200,000 then allegedly telling him that he could sell it to nasa for a profit. nice outfits. >> yeah. and sears is teaming up with amazon in a whole new way. if you buy your tires on amazon, you'll soon be able to get them installed at sears auto centers. it's the latest way the struggle retailer is trying to stay relevant to online shoppers. it's already selling two of its brands, kenmore and diehard, on amazon. so a pizza delivery by jetblue airlines that we talked about this week, well, this one ran into a little bit of a problem. the same one that passengers usually do. it was delayed in los angeles by what the airline called technical difficulties. the delay forced the cancellation of a pizza party celebrating the airline's pie in the sky promotion.

pilots of southwest airlines who landed their plane safely after one engine exploded midflight. >> yeah, they made that emergency landing in philadelphia with nearly 150 people on board. during the flight a piece of the engine broke a window partially sucking out a passenger, a mother of two from albuquerque who died from her injuries. the pilots spoke exclusively to abc's martha raddatz. >> tammie jo, describe to me the moment when you heard that bang, what kind of bang, what went through your mind. >> it was rather radical, and it yawed, and then it began its own descent, and darren was -- handled it beautifully in not trying to force the aircraft to stay on altitude. >> we were passing through about 32,000 feet when we had a large bang and a rapid decompression. >> my first thoughts were actually how, here we go, just

because it seemed like a flashback to some of the navy flying that we had done, but really darren just was very easy to communicate with, and we had to use hand signals because it was loud, and there was -- it was just hard to communicate for a lot of different reasons. >> martha's full exclusive interview airs tomorrow night on abc's "20/20." yale university is facing some new controversy after a white student called police on a black graduate student who was napping in her dorm's common room. now, the white student claimed she thought the other student was an intruder, but some students say this is not an isolated incident. the school says it will hold listening sessions to address student concerns. and emergency crews and dive teams in orlando, florida, will resume their search for a teenager who may have been attacked by an alligator. witnesses say they saw a boy swimming in the pond when he suddenly screamed that something bit him and then went under the water. police say so far they haven't been able to identify that boy.

a service dog company is accused of deceiving its customers into thinking they were buying a dog that could save their lives. more than 50 people are now part of a class action lawsuit filed in virginia. they say the company charged $25,000 for service animals but they were really just untrained puppies. giovanna flores says she bought a dog to help warn her when her son goes into diabetic shock. >> she's just not service dog material. she's a pet, and we do love her very much, but she's not -- if you compare her to another service dog that was properly trained, there's really no comparison. you would be like that's just a pet. that's just a dog. >> so, the company named in the lawsuit denies trying to mislead or defraud customers. the fda has announced a shortage in the life-saving epipen, but it's expected to be short term. the auto injectors millions of people use and rely on with

would be able to get these three terrific people during the meeting and bring them home after the meeting, and he was nice in letting them go before the meeting. frankly, we didn't think this was going to happen. and it did. >> the summit between president trump and kim expected to happen in june. the three men were scheduled to travel to walter reed for a medical evaluation and that's where they should be at this hour. >> a reason to celebrate. new details this morning on the golden state killer case. in the next few days prosecutors from four california counties are expected to discuss where suspect deangelo will stand trial. law enforcement officials will decide whether he'll be prosecuted in multiple trials in various counties, or if the case against him will be consolidateed into a single trial. so far he's been charged with eight murders in
