it's been a while. >> call her, mike. >> i will, absolutely. talk all the time, yeah. that's the problem when they live in atlanta. here's a look at our winds. notice they're a lot calmer than yesterday. 12 at fairfield. so, the sea breeze is out there, but it's really going to relax a little bit and almost evaporate as we head into the afternoon hours. here's a look at sutro tower and my planner, low to mid-50s, about the same as yesterday morning, but you'll notice the difference by noon. even the coast 60, low tomid-70 to 80 bay and inland by 4:00, 62 at the coast. and check out the temperatures in the evening hours, mid-to-upper 70s at 7:00. i hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy that. if not, we'll do it again tomorrow. i'll show you that coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. what are you watching, alexis? not much at this early hour, mike. and it is friday, so we have lighter volumes, at least typically. and we have road work in the castro valley area, eastbound 580 between groveway and palo verde. we had a backup a few minutes ago approaching that, but it

looks like that's thinned out and should be totally done by 6:00 a.m. so a few other mornings this week we had about a mile and a half to two miles of backup. it's friday. not as many folks on the road today, so that's not as bad. bay bridge toll plaza, a stack-up in the cash lanes on the left-hand side, but no delays with fastrak and carpooling. and metering lights on usually around 5:20, so we'll keep an eye on that. we'll look at drive times next. now, a live desk update from "abc7 mornings." >> want to show you what's happening in sunnyvale. looks like a big search is happening there. it started overnight about 11:00 p.m. after a violent incident near a 7-eleven. we don't have a lot of details right now, but we do see officers there with flashlights looking in the area of spinossa and templetn drive. there appears to be two different scenes, one at a 7-eleven and another in a nearby neighborhood. we have calls in right now. we have called sunnyvale dps and we'll update you as soon as we get any new information

throughout this newscast. >> thank you, jessica. manta san jose tweeted out this tongue in cheek picture yay and it gave us pause. why would it be so busy at the airport today? >> matt keller is live at the airport getting answers on this vague social media post. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. more, more, more, here at the san jose airport. we have more traffic, we have more airlines, we have more flights, we have more people, and that means longer lines here. tsa opened up early this morning here in terminal "b." that was at 3:45 a.m. here's why. >> we at the airport here are experiencing record passenger traffic due to all the growth with airlines and an increased opportunity to travel for both business and leisure, an incredible economy right now. >> reporter: now, this morning, they're expecting to break another record for the number of passengers to pass through san jose's airport, 24,000 people.

combined with the addition of new airlines and flights, summer travel season kicking off, some colleges letting out and mother's day weekend and you have a recipe for a busy weekend. passengers are noticing a difference. >> between 8:00 and 9:00, it's insane. it is absolutely insane the amount of people that are going through here and then trying to get out of here, trying to get a car or a taxi or an uber, it gets -- it's nuts. >> reporter: seven new airlines have started service here since 2014 and added 25 new routes. the airport is now recommending that you arrive two hours before your flight leaves. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc7 news. >> all right, matt, thank you. an update on progress now. this is one of seven debris dump sites in four counties, all of them dedicated to cleaning up from the north bay fires. crews have been working for seven months and now most of the work is finished. fema and the california office of emergency services says that this was the biggest clearing project since the 1906 erthquake. the "press democrat" reports the

cleanup will be done by the end of the month. >> i think everybody sort of underestimated the size, scope, and scale of the magnitude. >> the state and federal government spent $1.3 billion with a "b," removing 2.2 million tons of debris. >> pleasanton police want you to take a close look at this surveillance video. they're trying to identify a suspect who broke into a car outside food and beverage liquor store on stone ridge drive. this happened monday night. police say the suspect cased the store and car beforehand, then returned wearing a hoodie and a mask. the cop who accused san francisco police of harassment is out of a job. sources tell abc7 news the department fired that officer. the dismissal comes the same week we learned this officer faces serious questions about his credibility. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has more on this latest development. >> get off our property right now. >> reporter: we were not able to talk with the former san

francisco police officer who lives in pleasanton, but a neighbor said an unmarked police car and patrol units were at the house wednesday. sources tell us police came to the house to retrieve the officer's badge and service weapon. san francisco police will only confirm the officer has left the department. the officer is of afghan descent and is muslim. in april, he filed a complaint accusing the department of racial and religious harassment. >> i've been labeled as a rat, singled out by my colleagues. >> reporter: earlier this week, abc7 news learned in 2013, the officer was the subject of a napa police all points bulletin. police alerted other agencies that he told a woman on a dating website he was a high-level cia agent and that he was involved in the killing of osama bin laden. abc7 news also learned before he joined sfpd, he was kicked out of the oakland police academy for "untruthfulness." the officer's attorney told us his client "passed a lie detector test and a background check" when he was admitted to san francisco's academy.

in pleasanton, katie marzullo, abc7 news. 5:06 now. santa clara city councilman dominic caserta is facing sexual harassment and misconduct allegations. now officials are urging any other victims to contact police. he is also a civics teacher at santa clara high school. records surfaced on monday indicating students accused him of unwanted hugging and making inappropriate comments, and those complaints go back to 2002. he denies the allegations. he is running for a seat on the santa clara county board of supervisors. the city council's expected to address the allegations at next week's meeting. less than a month until the june primary, and the mayor's race in san francisco is taking an odd turn. >> yeah, yesterday, mark leno and jane kim rolled out a new campaign strategy, asking their supporters to vote for them as their first and second choices. this move could jeopardize london breat london's chances of winning. ranked voteings allows people to

pick the first three candidates. >> i am proud to be with state senator mark leno to take advantage of the rank choice voting system and encourage our supporters to vote for both of us. >> i'm presenting my case to voters, and i'm hoping that they make a good decision to put me in the mayor's office. >> polls right now showing nearly one-third of san franciscoans are still undecided with leno and breed in a virtual tie. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's start with current conditions. dress for temperatures in the upper 40s in castro valley and san leandro, 48 and 49. how about low 50s everywhere, until richmond and el sobrante at 53 and alameda at 54. oakland at 51 degrees. we have the same temperature in albany. look at novato, san carlos, fremont, pleasanton and livermore in the 50s. some 60s around antioch and brentwood. and right now napa and pacifica, because of the lack of clouds, in the upper 40s. all right, here's a look at the san mateo bridge. as far as our activity planner,

we've got mostly sunny conditions at the coast, in fact, the most sunshine we'll have moving forward will be today. out and about, dress for warmer conditions. so dress cooler. and then you can see with our bay, it's going to be gusty and choppy once again. let's talk about san francisco, where temperatures today will be warmer than average. look at this. we start at 56 at 8:00. we're 63 at noon, but then we hit the mid-to-upper 60s from 1:00 all the way through 8:00 in the evening. all right, across the bay, let's go back over there and show you a whole lot of 70s. we start at 56 at 8:00. at 10:00, we're at 64. then look at the low to mid-70s from noon all the way through 8:00. it's going to be a great day to be outside. just watch out for that strong sunshine. your microclimate forecast coming up, and a cooler mother's day the way it looks reichert now. here's alexis. good morning, mike. we have one new issue in oakland, although i don't think it's going to turn into much here. southbound 880 just before 23rd avenue, we have a solo vehicle crash reported, off on the right

shoulder. so, very minor issue here if you are leaving oakland and heading south. of course, 580 is wide open this morning, too, if you'd like to use that instead. drive times looking great, too. southbound 101 santa rosa to petaluma 14 minutes. westbound 580 castro valley to the maze 13, and highway 101680 to 85 in the green at 12 minutes. 5:10 now. prosecutors from four california counties are meeting today to talk about trying the accused golden state killer in one location for all 12 killings. santa barbara county's district attorney filed four murder charges against the suspect, joseph deangelo, yesterday. he already faced charges for two murders in sacramento county, and all the cases date back to the '70s and '80s. deangelo remains in jail in sacramento. police believe he committed at least 12 murders and more than 50 rapes. a 15-year-old student was air-lifted to a trauma center in the east bay after he got hit in the head by a shot put. east contra costa firefighters were called in to heritage high

school in brentwood around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. they found the teen near the school's track and treated him for a possible head or neck injury before being flown to walnut creek. no word on his condition. we are learning new details about what happened days after the deadly tesla crash in mountain view. >> we're now hearing from the contractor after the transportation official said three miles of wrong track were installed on the central subway project. that contractor is telling a different story. >> we talked about the massive proj that violent crime went up 18% in san francisco. in la, mayor antonio villaraigosa put more police on the streets and cut violent crime in half. california's police chiefs trust antonio for governor.

yeah, let's talk about the winds right now at 5:14. that's the time right now, but the time you want to keep in the back of your mind, 7:00 this evening. that's when the wind advisory begins. and look at the winds ramp up, 25 to 35 miles per hour, even gusts up to 55 in our hills above 1,000 feet. by 5:00 in the morning, we're back down to 20 to 25-mile-per-hour winds. and into the afternoon hours, much calmer conditions, but watch out. it's going to be a noisy night. reggie? new details involving the deadly tesla crash in mountain view nearly two months ago. according to "the mercury news," the car's high-voltage lithium-ion battery reignited while sitting in a tow yard. the revelation was included in a safety memo written last month by mountain view fire chief juan diaz. he says he issued the memo to protect firefighters in the department when dealing with future electric vehicle fires. 38-year-old walter wong died

after his model x hit a safety barrier on highway 101. we have exclusive i-team reports about this tesla crash on abc7news.com. and in today's "gma first look," the ntsb looking into another deadly crash involving a tesla. >> investigators are focusing their attention on the car's battery. here's diane macedo. >> in the first look, the ntsb is investigating a high-speed crash, a tesla model "s" consumed by fire. two high school seniors were killed, a third sent to the hospital. >> and no one would help, and that just crushed me. >> reporter: federal investigators and regulators are focused on what caused the battery-powered tesla to burst into flames after crashing into a concrete barrier. lithium-ion batteries can hold a lot of fire, but a short or breach can lead to a thermal runaway. we've seen it in phones, e-cigarettes, hoverboards, but cars contain thousands of batteries. >> the lithium battery is not intrinsically safe. >> reporter: tesla tells us in a statement, "serious high-speed collisions can result in a fire," but adds, "tesla data

shows a gas car in the united states is five times more likely to experience a fire." and we'll have more on the investigation coming up at 7:00 a.m. with your "gma first look." i'm diane macedo, abc news, new york. it's 5:16. new details on a big mix-up with a central subway project in san francisco. the city is blaming the contractor, tuitta perrinie, for installing the wrong steel. "the examiner" reports the contractor says it's in full compliance. yesterday we told you crews may need to replace miles of track, further delaying the opening in chinatown. the city says the contractor is at fault, buying and installing standard-strength steel instead of high-strength steel. >> we'll likely hear it on the committee i chair at government audit and oversight committee. we have to get a hold of these runaway contracts. >> the contractor stalls or does anything that is not specified within the contract, it's up to them to replace that. >> the contractor says the agreement with the city did not

call for high-strength steel on that portion of the track. e-mails obtained by "the examiner" show sfmta knew what kind of steel the contractor planned to buy back in 2015. it's 5:17 now. the alleged kingpin of robocalls just got hit with a record $120 million fine. adrian abramovich is accused of making nearly 100 million robocalls offering fake travel deals. the fcc commissioner applauds the fine but says going after one person is like, quote, emptying the ocean with a teaspoon. tech crunch says there were 3.4 billion robocalls last month alone. canada is starting to roll out technology next year designed to prevent robocalls. that same technology was actually recommended to the fcc more than a year ago. still no plans to roll out that technology here in the u.s. this morning we're getting an inside look at new homes that are built with smart technology. >> so, yesterday we told you the country's largest homebuilder, lennar, will incorporate amazon's alexa as a standard

get that black eye? good story. all right, let's talk about what's going on. you don't want to be inside cleaning this weekend, no. you want to be outside enjoying the wonderful weather and get something nice for mom to do sunday when it's going to be even milder than today, where it's going to be a little warm in some spots. here's a look at the golden gate bridge. notice no marine layer whatsoever. sunny, warmer than average today, even san francisco and the coast, just a little bit. and tonight, milder with gusty conditions in our hills. and it will be mild for mom. then much cooler next week. look at the storm track, well up to the north and then shifting into the rockies. that's an area of high pressure and that's the reason why we're going to be warm today and tomorrow. daly city 63, sunset 65. everybody else around san francisco, low to mid-70s with mission at 75, balboa park at 70 today, like downtown. oakland, 76. that's still pretty mild. look at those temperatures, mainly in the mid-to-upper 70s with the warmest spots at 77 degrees. same thing on the peninsula. we have mid-to-upper 70s.

over on the coast, half moon bay about 65, pacifica 63. that's pretty comfortable, especially if you're sitting in total sunshine. sunscreen a must today. uv index is high. 78. just the beginning of warmer temperatures in the south bay to 80 in los gatos and morgan hill. up in the north bay, low to mid-70s until sausalito. warmest also, low to mid-80s, almost comfortable in concord today at 80 degrees. let's do it again tomorrow after temperatures tonight in the 50s and 60s. you'll notice the difference when you step outside. all right, for sunday, we drop it back, more comfortable 50s, 60s and 70s. it just keeps getting cooler all the way through thursday. hope you have a good one! here's alexis. all right, good morning, mike. one more new minor issue in the oakland area. it is the harrison on-ramp to eastbound 580, solo vehicle crash. somehow, that vehicle ended up facing the wrong way and that went up the embankment. middle lanes of 580 are blocked and i'm not seeing any delays in the area.

san mateo bridge looking pretty light, although westbound is filling in. no major slowdowns as you head from hayward into the foster city area. and mass transit off to a great start, too. ace 1 and 3 out on time today and once again, those gps issues have been resolved. so once again, that website for ace is accurate. now, 44 b.a.r.t. trains and service, no delays there and no delays for san francisco based ferry. >> thank you. the project at the pier shipyard is officially under way. abc7 news were at the groundbreaking of the developments ten years in the making. it is at the foot of pore terrero hill and the dog patch neighborhood. the development will include up to 2,100 residential units, 30% affordable. there will also be park space for artists and more. supervisor malia cohen says that it builds on a connection to a piece of the waterfront that's never been accessible. >> beyond access, this project will deliver about $750 million of public benefit to our san

francisco city. $750 million. >> the project will take more than ten years to complete. we've all heard of robocalls, but lately, political campaigns have been doing something else. reggie, you know this well. they are texting you. >> i got a couple this week, yeah. >> i know. >> they're using the number you gave the state when you registered to vote. it's just like political phone banking, but instead of a call, you get a text. it started during the last presidential campaign. i was surprised when i got a text from rose. rose is with gavin newsom's campaign for governor. by the way, rose is a real person, not a bot. the law requires every text to have a live volunteer on the other end. >> a trainer volunteers to have conversations authentically. and of course, if folks want to unscribe or ask to be removed, we do that immediately. >> do they, though? because in my case, rose didn't respond to my request. the newsom campaign says supervisors look over the texts and they'll make sure it's done. so i guess i just have to trust

12-hour day planner. low to mid-50s this morning. step outside, feels about the same as yesterday. you'll notice the change once you leave the office at around noon or wherever you are inside. 60 at the coast, but 70 to 73 bay and inland. then 62 at the coast, definitely warmer, brighter, and it's 76 to 82, above-average temperatures at 4:00. the breezes kick in this evening and keep our temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s through at least 7:00. hope you enjoy it! here's alexis. >> good morning, mike. we have the bay bridge metering lights on now, so that occurred just a few minutes ago, about 5:27 this morning. just a few minutes later than monday through thursday. we are enjoying a little lighter traffic here on this friday morning, but the backup's starting to build into the maze, if you are not using the carpool lanes. also, pretty heavy out of the central valley, westbound 580 tracy to dublin, 53 minutes. southbound 680 dublin to mission boulevard in the green at 15 and northbound 85101 to cupertino looking good, in the green at 15 minutes. >> thank you, alexis. happening today, a judge considers if the ghost ship defendants should be let out of

jail. >> both are being held before their trial. their attorney will argue that the law's on their side to let them go home. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live for us in oakland. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hi, good morning, natasha. yeah, that court order came down in january, and it says judges should loosen up on tough bails, especially for defendants who can't afford them, and instead, consider alternatives like electronic monitoring. well, that order will be tested today in the high-profile case of derek ick almena and max har. their attorneys argue they are not a threat to society and should be released on bail. they are charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for all of the people who were killed in the ghost ship fire, that warehouse fire that happened about a year and a half ago in oakland. well, their attorneys argue that was a situational crime that they are accused of, that they are not a danger to the public. well, prosecutors are worried that they will run away and

never show up for court again, so they want them to stay in jail. that motion will be heard today. their trial is set for july. their attorneys argue they will be able to better prepare for their trial if they are out of jail, they are able to fight the case better than if they were inside. reporting live in oakland, amy hollyfie hollyfield, abc7 news. now, a live desk update from "abc7 mornings." >> the emergency in hawaii continues. in fact, it's getting so bad, the state's governor has now asked the president to declare the state a major disaster. kilauea continues to spew lava. and overnight, new cracks actually developed. right now there's still major concern about cracks on highway 130. that would be the main, one of the main roads on the island. and also new this morning, most of hawaii volcano national park closed indefinitely. scientists do think that kilauea could have a major eruption at any moment.

it could be a steam and ash explosion so that if this thing erupts with all that steam, what the concern is, is that huge boulders couldbly thousand -- fly thousands of feet away and put a lot of the island in danger, not just the areas where fissures have opened up, reggie. >> right. i mean, currently, it's not a hugely populated area where the ash is, but that could definitely change. thank you so much, jessica. chp is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash on interstate 580 in san leandro. a man was hit just west of the 150th avenue on-ramp at about 10:00 last night. the victim rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. several people called 911 to report a pedestrian was down in the far right lane of the free. investigators do not have a description of the driver or the vehicle. well, court fines and fees can certainly add up, trapping low-income people in debt. that's why san francisco's supervisors are considering a

proposal to end fees associated with probation and electronic monitoring. according to "the examiner," the ordinance would cost the city about $1.2 million in lost revenue a year. supporters, though, say the benefits far outweigh the cost. they say it will help people who have served time for a crime move forward in life. the proposal passed in committee yesterday. the full board will vote at a later date. a 16-year-old sophomore says it took just a matter of minutes for him to hack into the grading system at ygnacio valley high school in concord. david rotaro was arrested on wednesday morning right after he left his home for school. he says he created a phishing e-mail a couple of weeks ago and sent it out to school staff. the teen says all he needed was one username and password. rotaro says he changed the grades of 10 to 15 classmates. he says he raised the grades of his friends and dropped the grades of the people that he doesn't like. he never actually got around to changing his own grades. >> i kind of want to give awa

facing backlash for an insensitive comment she reportedly made about senator john mccain. "the hill" reports it happened during a closed-door meeting yesterday after mccain said he opposed the president's nominee for cia director. according to an unnamed source, press aide kelly sadler said, "it doesn't matter, he's dying anyway." as you probably know, mccain is battling brain cancer and underwent surgery last month. well, when cindy mccain heard about this, she tweeted at sadler yesterday, saying "may i remind you, my husband has a family, seven children, and five grandchildren." their daughter, meghan mccain, will address the comment today on "the view." you can watch that here on abc7 at 10:00 a.m. 5:37 now. happening today, governor brown will release a revised budget plan that includes $96 million more to fight the threat of wildfires. and part of that money will double the land that california protects through controlled burns and tree thinning to 500,000 acres. brown also wants to reach out to more land owners to get them to

"robin" is written by "the new york times" reporter david itzkoff, telling of the months leading up to williams' suicide, from depression to declining health. the actor took his own life four years ago at his home in tiburon. months earlier, he had been diagnosed with parkinson's disease. a warning if you use smart assistants like siri or alexa, hackers could take control of your smart device and you won't even know it. uc berkeley researchers have found that apple's siri, amazon's alexa, and google's assistant can be hacked by commands hidden in music or even through spoken words. researchers have been able to dial phone numbers and open websites using this hack. they say the technology could be used to unlock your doors, to wire money, or to buy stuff

online, simply with music playing on a radio or through your device. amazon, google, and apple say they're taking steps to make their systems more secure. well, if you rent, you could soon have more protection from being evicted. would require landlords to accept rent payments from a third party. non-profits sometimes step in to pay the rent of people who are struggling financially. you may not know that right now, landlords can refuse to accept a payment from people who are not the tenant. >> what we've seen is an upt in evictions where landlords are not accepting those rents and evicting the tenant, when they could actually just be taking the rent from some third party. >> well some real estate groups are critical of the bill. they fear it could force landlords to accept partial payments instead of the full amount due. there could be a secret, more productive meeting, and it's coffee, according to research by uc davis. the study found people who had coffee before a meeting rated both their performance and the group's performance more positively than people who

and let's talk temperatures, especially this afternoon. hi, everybody. here's a look from san jose at 280 at 17. you can see the sun's getting an early start. it's going to push our temperatures 4 to 11 degrees warmer than yesterday as we get near summer levels from 70 in san francisco to 85 in san ramon. now breaking news from the abc7 live desk. >> breaking news just in from redwood city. and look at this, a car ended up inside of a house. you can see there that it's gone pretty far inside. this is a live look from sky 7. they just arrived on scene. this is on farm hill boulevard.

studies that show that people who regularly weigh themselves are better at maintaining their weight, but again, it's not just about that number on the scale. you guys know as former athletes, muscle is a dense tissue, and you can be very healthy, very fit, and see that number on the scale go up. >> many medical experts say the scale is a useful tool initially to evaluate health on a weekly or monthly schedule, but day to day can be more stressful than it is helpful. >> i can totally see that, especially when you start gaining muscle. you can totally get derailed by seeing that number go up on the scale, even if your pants fit better. starbucks opening its bathrooms to anyone who needs them, not just customers. this decision, of course, follows a recent incident in philadelphia where two african-american men were arrested at a starbucks. they had asked to use the bathroom but were turned away because they were not paying customers. they later took a table without ordering anything, and then the manager called police and officers arrested them for trespassing. that incident led to intense public backlash. starbucks has since promised to train its employees about racial bias.
