for state superintendent who's done it before. less bureaucracy, more classroom funding. marshall tuck for state superintendent. marshall tuck. live where you live, this is abc 7 news. a car careens into a home this morning in the hills of redwood city as the homeowner slept. there's different accounts as to why this happened. thank you for joining us, more on that bizarre crash in a moment, but let's begin in southern california where sheriffs deputies say a 14-year-old opened fire on a high school campus. the shooting happened before school this morning at highland high school in palmdale in los angeles county. investigators say the vick ttims shot in the arm and is now in the hospital in stable condition.

they have taken a 14-year-old boy into custody, and they recovered a firearm as stunted students react. >> everybody heard it. so many people froze up, and i wanted to know where it was coming from because i already knew what was that sound. >> sheriff officials say it was triggered by a dispute between the suspect and victim, no longer a threat to the public, and minutes ago, the lockdown at the campus was lifted. now, just into the abc 7 newsroom, a judge made a decision on the motion to drop charges against the ghost ship warehouse suspects. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield was in the courtroom when the decision was made. >> reporter: the judge denied the most as not going to drop the charges. it took us awhile to get there with a lot of arguing going on back and forth, and no one was really surprised by the judge's decision. it was expected. everyone in the courtroom looking ahead to what's coming later today. let me tell you about what we

just went through. derek and his wife, micah alison, in court here. a spokesperson thought the judge was fair in the morning's decision. attorneys made lengthy arguments to drop the charges including the fact that the cause of the ghost ship fire was never found how could it be blamed on derek and max harris. that ghost ship warehouse went up in flames in oakland a year and a half ago during a concert. 36 people were killed. he and harris face 36 charges of involuntary manslaughter. they told the gallery he's not here to decide whether they are guilty, just probable cause. if there's enough to go to trial, he said there is, trial is set for july. next up today, though, is whether they should be released on bail, whether they should be allowed out of jail. the attorneys are arguing that it is harsh keeping them in jail, that they are not a threat

to society. they also believe they can better prepare for their upcoming trial if they are out of jail than if they are inside, so stay with abc 7 news. we expect more developments on this story today, and we'll get them to you, leslie brinkley, my colleague, is in the courtroom now listening for further developments. live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. a peninsula homeowner is unhurt and lived to tell about a frightening tale this morning when a car careened into his house while he slept. what investigators have to figure out was it mechanical failure or criminal behavior. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at the scene in redwood city, matt? >> reporter: no matter the cause, this house is damaged. you can see the path the car took through the yard, into the porch, and into the house. thankfully, no serious injuries. this crash into a house in redwood city is unusual, but the

homeowner knew it was a possibility. >> i wouldn't say it's surprising. >> reporter: sky map 7 shows this is on emerald hill road. the bmw went through the intersection into the yard before coming to a stop inside sam's house just before 5:15 this morning. >> he basically said that his brakes had gone out and he was losing control of the vehicle. >> reporter: sam woke up minutes before the crash. >> i was rolled over to cuddle with the new puppy, and, you know, heard a loud sound, and then all the sudden, the house shook. >> reporter: he checked to make sure the driver was okay, the 24-year-old got out of the car and started treatment on a cut to the hand. police arrived and gave the driver a sobriety test. witnesses say the driver was taken awe by the police. a b.i.d.ing inspector was called to the scene. >> yellow tagged us, meaning, you know, structural walls were damaged, so we can go in and out and grab things, but we can't occupy the residence until that's shored up. >> reporter: architects were

here yesterday discussing renovations. that timeline was moved up. >> this might just be the catalyst that catapults us into renovation. >> reporter: we reached out to the police to find out what charges, if any, the driver will face, and they have yet to return our call. live in redwood city, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. now look at the video from sky7. it shows crews rescuing a man from an overturned suv this morning just before 7:00. this is in oakland on highway 24 just west of the tunnel. no word on extent of injuries or why he lost control. three lanes, though, blocked at one point backing up traffic. minutes before that accident in oakland, sky7 shot this video of an incident on the upper deck of the richmond san rafael bridge. the driver swerved to avoid running over a tarp on the road, but he crashed, and his car is actually totalled now. no other injuries were reported.

new details on a big mixup with the central subway project in san francisco. the city is blaming the contractor for installing the wrong kind of steel, but the examiner reports the contractor says it's in full compliance. yesterday, we told you crews may need to replace miles of track further delaying the opening of the subway station in china town. the contractor is at fault, the city says, not buying high strength steel. >> we're hear it at the oversight committee. we have to get a hold of the runaway contracts. >> contractor installs or does anything that's not specified in the contract, it's up to them to replace that. >> the agreement with the city did not call for a high strength steel on that portion of the track. e-mails obtained by the examiner show sfmta knew what kind of steel the contractor planned to buy back in 2015. if you are flying out of the

san jose airport, plan ahead. early morning passengers braved busy terminals. the airport is expecting record numbers throughout the day. tsa opened early, 24,000 people are expected to fly out today. the airport is recommending you arrive two hours before your domestic flight departs. record passenger traffic is being attributed to airport growth, mother's day, not when you expect this traffic, but, yeah, it is now, and end of school, and new routes. san francisco international airport is looking to reduce traffic congestion charging uber and lyft more to drop riders at the curb. there's a lower rate for customers dropped off or picked up in the airport's central garage. the exact amount of fees are being discussed, but the plan takes effect july 1st if approved by the airport commission. a white house aide is now accused of mocking senator john mccain's cancer decision.

outrage grows this morning after sources say a white house aide made a joke about senator john mccain as he battles brain cancer. his daughter is responding. abc news reporter has more on the fallout. >> reporter: this morning, megan mccain is standing up for her father. >> it is not how you die, but how you live, and -- >> reporter: reacting after a white house aide down played her father, senator john mccain's opposition to the nominee, saying, it doesn't matter, he's dying anyway. >> i don't understand what environment you're working in when that's acceptable and come to work the next day and still have a job. >> reporter: the comment made comes after mccain forcefully rejected trump's pick for cia director saying the role overseeing the use of torture by americans is disturbing. he spent five years as p.o.w. in

president trump's personal lawyer, michael cohen, was a big mistake. the company said cohen approached them following the 2016 election. the one-year contract paid cohen $50,000 a month. in an internal memo to employees obtained by the associated press, at&t's ceo called the hiring a serious misjudgment and said the executive who oversaw that contract with cohen no longer works for the company. the two pilots who safely landed a plane last month after the engine failed said team work and training got them through the horrifying experience. captain tammy sat down with martha to talk about the life changing flight, one that left a passenger dead, unfortunately. that interview airs tonight on "20/20," and there's insight into what the pilots experienced during that terrifying ordeal. >> when you talked to her about what happened in that cockpit,

you sunday. here's what's going on. hazy out there, i checked the latest readings, no spare the air day, and not seeing anything unhealthy outside. so, bright, warm, that's the first one for the afternoon. all right, sea breeze returns for mother's day so temperatures will cool and cooler throughout next week. all right. what does it feel like right now? 70s in the north bay. east bay valleys, everybody else pretty much in the mid to upper 60s, san francisco and peninsula low 60s there, and upper 50s at the coast. you'll get to 65 at half moon bay, and 78 in santa cruz, easily the brightest and warmest day moving forward. 70 in san francisco. we'll have mid to upper 70s in the bay shore, and down into the south bay, morgan hill at 80, and low to mid-80s in the north bay and east bay valleys. look how the day is going to break down. you can see by the beaches, most sunshine. good day there. remember, wear the sunscreen. all right. if you're out and about, dress cooler, yeah, it's going to be warmer today, 10-12 degrees

warmer, but on the bay, though, this is what's going to happen at 3:00 this afternoon. no matter where you are on the bay, winds are from the north and northwest, gusting up to 30 miles per hour at 3:00 and goes up until 9:00. all right. let's see what's going to happen as far as your temperatures. what you notice about the breezes is they keep temperatures up through the 12-hour day planner in the evening and overnight hours. until then, we got 50s to 60s at the coast, up until 8:00. low to mid-70s for lunch, and 70 to 80 above average temperatures at 4:00 around the bay and inland, and check it out, in the low to mid-70s at 8:00 and mid-60s at mid night. in fact, because of the winds, temperatures drop into the mid-60s and 50s. at the coast, low 50s. mother's day planner for sunday, definitely cooler, especially at the coast, 58, the bay, though, inland, it's very comfortable with an afternoon high of 72 and
