the newest flavor of oreo cookies. and we do say good monday morning, everybody. this could be a day of major contrast in the middle east that all revolves around the openingo of the new u.s. embassy in israel today. >> it's being moved from tel aviv to jerusalem that could spark demonstrations. abc's molly hunter is there. good morning, molly. >> reporter: diane, kendis, good morning. that's right. it's a big day here. a lot is changing but we don't know much about that ceremony yet. it will start at 9:00 a.m. eastern. about 800 guests including ivanka trump and jared kushner and we do know that president trump will address that ceremony on a video message. ivanka trump and jared kushner arrived sunday alongside a large american delegation to help open the new u.s. embassy in jerusalem. >> recognize jerusalem as the capital. >> reporter: just five months after president trump made the announcement, one of the

existing consulate buildings in jerusalem today will become an embassy. prime minister netanyahu heaped praise on president trump. >> president trump is making history. we are deeply grateful, and our people will be eternally grateful for his bold decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital and to move the embassy there. >> reporter: but palestinians feel betrayed by the u.s. and they're furious. >> they always had hopes in having jerusalem as the future c capital of palestine if a deal was struck. >> reporter: on sunday adding fuel to the fire right wing activists marched. she says there will never be peace until you leave jerusalem. already thousands of marchers out here behind damascus gate. this is the entrance to the old city and a lot were celebrating what israelis call jerusalem day. it's how they mark the day that

jerusalem was unified. but the u.n. and most of the international community doesn't recognize israel's annexation of east jerusalem in 1967. on tuesday, palestinians will ramp up protests in gaza marking nakia day -- nakba day, the day after israel's founding that hundreds of thousands of palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes. all to say a couple of high stakes days for a place used to teetering on the edge. now, guys, we will be watching for scattered protests today across east jerusalem and the west bank but, again, the big day, the big day we will be watching for fiery protests is tomorrow in gaza. diane and kendis. >> i know they're ramping up security in the area. molly hunter in jerusalem for us, thanks, molly. overnight the kilauea volcano in hawaii has opened yet another crack sending lava flowing into a residential neighborhood. now, besides lava the openings are spewing poisonous gases and future vents are likely to cut off escape routes out of the threatened neighborhoods. scientists say the entire volcano could erupt at any moment. abc's janai norman has the latest.

>> reporter: another crack opening in the ground. the 18th fissure in more than a week erupting on hawaii's big island. >> explosion is pow, pow, pow. things moving and the bigger explosions i've actually seen rocks fly over the tree line and i can feel in my body. >> reporter: the sound roaring as lava sizzles bubbling upwards of 800 feet in the air torching trees and stoking fears for people living nearby. >> last week it's almost like your life is on hold. it's not like it's a hurricane where you think, okay, in three days it will be here and go or a forest fire. this is almost like a slow motion train wreck. >> reporter: more than three dozen buildings have already been destroyed. one of the biggest concerns now, that a major roadway could be cut off potentially leaving residents stranded. abc's marci gonzalez is there. >> this fissure opened up in a wooded area. it is nowhere near any homes, but the concern is that more could open up, and so they're telling people who are not in

evacuation zones to be ready to get out immediately. >> reporter: meanwhile, the threat of another kind of eruption looms. a massive steam explosion geologists say could happen any day with the potential to catapult enormous boulders and rain down ash for miles. >> if there is a steam explosion, the national guard might have a bigger play dealing with evacuations, dealing with security. it has a major impact in the area. >> reporter: and people are also facing concerns over air quality. as many as 2,000 people could be forced to evacuate because of lava emitting toxic fumes. kendis. >> yeah, quite a tense moment there in hawaii. janai, thank you. and now to an about-face by president trump. he's offering a life line to a japanese phone company that was punished by the u.s. last month for violating sanctions against north korea and iran. president trump now says he's working with china's president to get phonemaker zte back in business after the u.s. commerce department cut off the company's access to u.s. suppliers. the president has slammed china

for unfair trade practices, but the two countries are now in the middle of negotiations aimed at avoiding a trade war. senator john mccain's daughter meghan says she's now waiting for a public apology from the white house aide who mocked her dad. kelly sadler dismissed mccain's opposition to the cia director nominee by saying it doesn't matter, he's dying anyway. mccain's daughter says sadler promised she would apologize publicly. that has yet to happen. police are questioning the parents and friend of the suspect behind a deadly knife attack in paris, and isis is claiming responsibility for it in a busy paris neighborhood that left one dead and four others wounded. witnesses say the killer shouted god is great in arabic. within minutes police shot and killed the suspect identified as a 20-year-old french citizen born in chechnya. they say he was on a watch list for radicalism and pledged allegiance to isis. and we're following breaking news from indonesia where the the country's second largest city has been hit by another suicide bombing carried out by members of one family.

this time a police station in surabaya was targeted. ten people were hurt. just yesterday three churches were bombed by members of a different family. more than a dozen people were killed in that instance. some young girls were among those bombers who died. isis is claiming responsibility. memorial day exactly two weeks away, and gas prices could rise another 20 cents by then. the national average right now is $2.87 per gallon, which is already 50 cents higher than last year at this point. experts blame higher demand, the more expensive summer blend of gas and the new sanctions from the white house on iran. time now for a look at your weather on this monday morning. severe thunderstorms bringing large hail and high winds to central and southern plains overnight. the storm system will move into the ohio valley and mid-atlantic regions later today. travel and outdoor events like baseball games could be disrupted.

outside a mall near milwaukee. at least one local group is now calling for the officer to be fired and prosecuted. the police department says it's investigating but says the video only tells part of the story. they say the teenager actually threw the first punch. southwest airlines is investigating yet another in-flight scare. a loss of pressure forced flight 861 from denver to dallas to make an emergency landing. the oxygen masks came down when the plane was about 30 minutes from dallas. more than 100 passengers were on board and some say they were pretty scared. >> if we ended up crashing, i wanted people to know like what was going on. >> i reached over and grabbed josh by the arm because i didn't know whether we were going to make it or not. >> some passengers reported suffering ear pain, but no major injuries were reported. a new report blames cars with keyless ignitions for dozens of deaths. "the new york times" reports 28 people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning after

drivers accidentally left their cars running inside closed garages. now critics say the cars should do more to alert drivers when not turned off. keyless ignitions are standard in more than half the vehicles sold in the united states. another blockbuster weekend for the latest "avengers" movie. "infinity war" debuted in china making $200 million there. that's nearly smashing a box office record in that country. the movie has now made $1.6 billion worldwide in just a few weeks. amazing. melissa mccarthy had a disappointing weekend at theaters. >> so, the surprise entertainment took everyone by prize because animals took center stage included that caged tiger. an extravagant prom for students at a miami area high school. the theme, welcome to the jungle. and keeping with that concept, a caged tiger rolled onto the dance floor. >> oh, my god. >> my son paid to go to a prom. this was the surprise entertainment. >> reporter: the cell phone video shows students watching in awe, but many parents not pleased concerned not only for the kids' safety but also for the animals. >> that tiger was in distress. the reason he's pacing up and down and up and down with his tail going the way that it's going and his ears all folded back is showing you distress. >> reporter: the school released a statement saying in part, the tiger, which was displayed for only a few minutes, was in a cage, was never harmed or in danger, was not forced to perform, was always accompanied by its handlers and for the majority of the time was laying down in a relaxed state facing

away from the audience. but the video shows otherwise. the tiger is seen pacing in the cage while performers use fire to entertain the class. >> these animals are not entertainment. >> reporter: and it wasn't just a tiger. school officials say several other animals were on display. including a lemur. two macaws and african anyonic fox. >> the saddest part of it all is there is no merit to the life of that animal. that that animal doesn't deserve any better. >> the school says they were provided by a facility licensed by the florida fish and wildlife commission, and the hotel apparently approved the tiger's appearance. a 5-year-old girl in colorado is recovering after being attacked by a black bear. she was dragged across her backyard near grand junction until her mother finally screamed and the bear let her go. the girl had gone outside in the middle of the night to check on noises that she thought were coming from her dog. the bear has not been found. authorities though are warning

neighbors to be on high alert. >> at 5:30 this morning, it rang and it was the police were telling us to stay in place, shelter in place, they said. there's an aggressive bear on the loose in this area. >> the girl is now in fair condition after getting at least 77 stitches. surgery took three hours but the doctor says she was the calmest person in the room. brave little girl. yeah, now to that scene in las vegas on the strip. police say a man fell four stories off a balcony at the luxor hotel. they say some decorations broke the 20-year-old's fall and he suffered only minor injuries. they say alcohol played a role in the incident. in sports longtime nfl coach chuck knox passed away. he led the rams, bills and seahawks during a 22-year head coaching career. knox was named nfl coach of the year three types. he was 86 years old. and in the nba playoffs lebron james says he has zero level of concern after the cavaliers were blown out by the celtics.

someone lost part of a pile of dirt. that's partially blocking the connector ramp. chp does know about that. in the meantime, it's not causing any major delays. once again, the stackup in the cash lanes for the bay bridge toll plaza, everyone else moving along fine. the metering lights should flip on about 5:25 this morning. i want to show you a live look right now at the middle east. this is in the gaza strip. the new u.s. embassy in jerusalem officially opens today, and that is infuriating palestinians. we've seen these types of protests all night long in gaza, weeks of protests up to today have left more than 40 dead, hundreds more injured. already today one palestinian was killed. these protests have symbolic timing. today is the 70th anniversary of israeli's independence. the israeli military has reinforced troops and police in the west bank and the gaza strip
