live where you live, this is abc 7 news. new revelation on the investigation into last night's deadly stabbing at sonoma state university. mean time, police are reassuring students there's no further threat to the campus community. thanks for joining us. i'm kiss ten sze. they revealed the stabbing suspect and victim knew each other. we are live at sonoma state where a news conference wrapped up, amy? >> reporter: we just got briefed, kristen, and police say these two were visiting someone on campus. they are not students here. police tell us that the victim is a 26-year-old.

they have not released his name, but they told us who they arrested. >> suspect we arrested is tyler, t-y-l-e-r, brotton, b-r-o-t-t-o-n. he's been transported currently to the county jail for murder and he has no bail. >> reporter: the stabbing happens just before 6:00 last night in the village residential community on the sonoma state campus. students describe a tense night as they waited for details while trying to study for final exams that started today. >> and i was over there when it all happened, and it was so crazy, and just absolutely so heart breaking. >> i did stop studying for a bit. i was a bit paranoid looking out the window, and once i heard it was okay, i got back on that grind. >> reporter: last night's stabbing reminded students of a year and a half ago when an 18-year-old was found stabbed to

death and buried near campus. that killer has not been caught. >> crazy because, like, last year, they found a dead body on the other side, and then someone was stabbed to death, within two years, two things like this happened, it's crazy. >> reporter: investigators say the man arrested last night is not a student at sonoma state, and neither is the victim who was 26 years old. >> good the police did their job right, someone's in custody, and my heart goes out to the victim. it's really sorry to hear something happening to a college aged student, but yeah, it's a sad situation. >> reporter: grief counselors are here on campus to offer any support to students who need it. i did ask police about a motive. why were they here on campus visiting someone? could it have been a drug deal? they say they are trying to figure that out and looking into that and asking for any witnesses to please come forward and talk to them. reporting live, amy hollyfield,

abc 7 news. >> thank you. more to sort out. the u.s. supreme court today paved the way for states to decide if they want legalized sports gambling. the defeat is a major victory for state rights that could spill into other areas such as marijuana and immigration. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live to explain, matt? >> reporter: kristen, this could be big money for casinos and also for state governments, but that law expert i talked to this morning said it could spill over into other issues like marijuana and immigration. we start with the sports gambling aspect of the story. this morning, the supreme court struck down a ban on sports gambling. now it's possible everywhere as long as the state governments approve it. new jersey could be up and running within weeks, and more than a dozen states are in the process of passing laws allowing california lawmakers could decide to do it as well. santa clara law professor says

people paid close attention to this case because of its relationship with other regulatory areas. >> it says something larger about the way in which the federal government can regulate the states, which has effects in drug regulation, immigration regulation. i'm certain that the next round of argument in the immigration fight, the department of justice versus california, features this case quite prominently. >> reporter: some of the sports world like the owner of the washington capitals and wizards called the decision a great one for sports fans and will bring better protections and guarantees for the consumers. others like the nfl are asking congress to enact a core regulatory framework for the legalized sports betting. eventually, experts say you're going to be able to make bets on your phone and that could happen inside sports arenas as the games are happening. reports live, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. major league baseball reacted to today's ruling saying in part, "as each state considers whether to allow

holly hunter, abc news, jerusalem. new details in the golden state killer case. a judge did not rule this morning on whether to make public the search and arrest warrants for the suspect. it was continued for may 29th. no cameras in court today, but he was not in a wheelchair as seen in previous court appearances. he's been charged with 12 murders in three counties and suspected in more than 50 rapes. developing news from san francisco, bart and san francisco police consider joining forces to clean up civic center station. now, you may have seen this disturbing video from april. it shows drug addicts shooting up as commuters walked by at the station. bart police say their agency assured 30 officers and need help to really clean up the station. law enforcement and legal experts told the san francisco chronicle that the problem cannot be solved with just four officers. a homeless woman in san

francisco's mission district is accused of trying to grab a baby out of the mother's arms. now police are investigating. this happened yesterday on mother's day at 14th street. neighbors say the area is overrun with transients. now take a look at the footage of the suspect. it captures the moments leading up to the struggle for the woman's baby, and witnesses say rex moore came to the rescue. >> i had an object in my hand just to let her know, you're not going to take the baby. move down and get off my street. she was a homeless woman, and looked like she was under the influence of drugs. >> reporter: the baby was taken to the hospital to ensure she was okay, and san francisco police detained four transients for questioning. it's unclear what charges, if any, that woman faces. there are three weeks left until san francisco heads to the polls to vote for mayor, but over the weekend, the race took

an ugly turn when someone yelled racial slurs at jane kim. >> [ bleep ] [ bleep ]. >> this cell phone video was taken saturday at the origin club on philmore street. former state senator leno and kim hosted an event there when protesters gathered as well. a new profit called new community leadership foundation called for a peaceful gathering to voice concerns about leno and kim, and that the agitators are not members involved in the rally. organizers reached out to kim about the incident. >> while slurs and ethnic based slurs are never okay, we also have to acknowledge that there has been a divide. >> i don't tolerate racism of any kind. people that support me, that support other candidates that unfortunately, you know, things like this happened throughout the campaign trail. >> we are just getting word in right now that the guy who made the hateful statement may be

and that breaking news is from fairfield. now getting word that fairfield police department just announced minutes ago they rescued ten children from what it calls horrible living conditions. police say the children are between four months and 11 years old living in squaller and unsafe conditions. their mother and father have been arrested. all ten children have been taken into protective custody by solano county welfare services. we will have much more on this developing story coming up later today on abc 7 news as well as
