rights. it's a win for the casual fan, many of whom who wanted to bet legally, but couldn't in their particular state. >> the supreme court ushers in a new era of sports betting. good afternoon. i'm ama daetz. thank you for joining us. i'm larry beil. the justice allowed sports gambling all across the nation. this strikes down a federal law from 1992 that banned sports betting in most states. new jersey led the charge on this change. >> i think it's bg to be a great people for the people of the state who are sports fans and like to put a wager on a sporting event and it will be good from a revenue perspective. the nfl is taking a more measured response calling on congress to enact core regular layings around the newly legalized sports bet being industry. >> it could be legalized in 26 states, california could be one of them. we want to know what you think of it. >> is it a source of tax revenue or don't gamble, don't care. you can weigh in on

will score big. >> that one is hit to left field. >> with apps to place bets from your phone and not just on traditional sports. >> the nation of e-sport and sport betting could lead to very interesting outcomes. >> even letting spectators bet from inside their vr headsets. >> there will be people that get in too deep that don't understand what they're getting into and hopefully find their way out. >> it's all good clean fun until someone loses their life savings. >> it's difficult to make a living gambling on sportsment only about 2.3% of gamblers win over the long haul. >> in san francisco, jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. the process to legalize sports gambling in the state of california won't happen overnight. the first step to making it happen here is under way. kristen sze joins us with that part of the story. >> hours after the ruling, central valley assemblyman adam gray announced he's moving forward to amend the california

constitution which currently bans sports betting. the idea that it would sit and wait until the supreme court ruling came down. now that it has, the bill will go through the committee process in sacramento. if the amendment gets 2/3 support in the senate and the assemblyt will go on a state wide ballot to be ratified by california voters. it just needs a simple majority. assemblyman gray says the soonest it could happen is this november. the soonest you place them legally, a constitutional law professor at santa clara university says there's still other hurdles. >> california probably has other laws, other state laws that already have those prohibitions, so california would have to repeal those and if they wanted to create a structure for illegal -- a legal structure for that sports gambling. >> reporter: backers expect -- since the entities currently have a monopoly on legalized

gambling in the state. but they expect plenty of supporters given the ability to regulate a legalized industry and the potential tax benefit. an estimated 20 to $40 billion of black market sports betting goes on in california. even a small percentage in taxes will be a big boost to the state coffers. larry andama. >> kristen, it's a fascinating question when you look at the ramifications. will this be a source of revenue. or don't gamble, don't care. let's see where we are. 41% see this as a possible new source of tax revenue. just blue sky for a second. don't know that they're going to do this. the chase center will open up in 18 months or so. what if they had a sports book in the chase center. you could bet on the warriors while you go to the game. what if it raises 100 to $200 million in extra tax revenue and all that went to public schools. there's a lot of ways it could go. some could be really good, some not so good.

his official schedule said he was having lunch with vice president pence. the president and first lady spoke before her procedure and he spoke to the doctor immediately after. this evening, the president traveled to walter reed to visit the first lady. she does not keep a robust public schedule. he was there at joint base andrews early last thursday to welcome the three american detainees. it was last monday when she officially unveiled the be best policy focused on children. >> the first lady's office says she's looking forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children. karen travers, abc news, the white house. you can send the first lady best wishes by sharing this get well soon badge on our facebook page and on twitter. sacramento judge delayed a decision on whether search and arrest warrants for the suspected golden state killer, joseph deangelo should be made public. media outlets want the records

unsealed, they'll provide important details about how prosecutors identify deangelo and what evidence they've gathered from him. the defense claims the information could taint jurors and witnesses, a decision is now expected on may 29th. deangelo has been charged with 12 murders. this is video from his initial court appearance last month. he appeared in court. not in a wheelchair as we seen him previously. two acts of violence near the santa cruz boardwalk have visitors and business owners concerned. >> with weekend crowds enjoying the attractions, a young man from vacaville was shot and killed. reporter david louis live on the boardwalk with reaction. >> reporter: you can imagine how crowded it was for mother's day. lots of crowds out here at the beach and boardwalk. some were surprised to hear a shot coming from inside a car parked in this lot. 19-year-old isaako owe excuse me. isaac lopez from vacaville was

wounded and later died at a local hospital. it's two incidents in a row, two days in a row that has people on edge. >> the shooting happened as four young men sat in a car in a parking lot across from the main entrance to the boardwalk. the victim was hit in the upper torso as he sat on the left side of the rear seat. this is the second act of violence outside the popular beach attraction over the weekend. on saturday night a 17-year-old was stabbed nearby. police say the incidents are not related. still the shooting was enough reason for this visitor from red bluff to stay away. after hearing about it. >> we just stayed in our hotel. >> not that concerned about it. >> how do you feel today snoo. >> not that bad. bright daylight. >> both incidents occurred off of boardwalk property. a staff of 65 security officers and a network of monitored security cameras. >> our security responded very quickly to both instances and

couple of days. see you then. 9-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after gusting winds blew the bounce house he was playing in right on to highway 395. this happened saturday in the san bernardino county. the bounce house rolled out on to the freeway and hit a vehicle. that's when the boy fell out. the child was taken to the hospital. the driver in the vehicle was not injured but was shaken up. south 101 will be shut down overnight and tomorrow. cal trans will close the southbound lanes on 101 between marsh road and university avenue. traffic will be diverted off the freeway at marsh down middlefield road at university. officials say the closures are necessary to install girders as part of the project to widen the willow road overpass. a mother's worst nightmare. somebody trying to steal her baby right out of the mother's

today, another fissure opened up spewing for lava on hawaii's big island. the risk is not over. abc news reporter marci gonzalez has the latest. >> reporter: another line of lava spewing from a new crack in the earth. one of the latest fissures sending what the usgs called splatter bombs 500 feet into the air. >> rocks fly over the tree line. >> it was so loud, this is the headline in the newspaper. >> i heard what sounded like a jet turbine. >> 19 fissures opened here in this corner of hawaii's big island in the past week and a half. fresh ee rupss prompting new evacuations and a warning that as many as 2,000 more people

michael finney is here answering questions you sent in via facebook, twitter and e-mail. chenille asks, i hired a flooring company to install wood. planning to file a mechanic's lien on my house. what's the best course of action? >> what were your expectations? were they written into the contract? was the work up to the usual standards? if the floors show poor workm workmanship. take photos and document all the issues and report the flooring company to the contractor state license board. move fast. all of this is best taken care of before a mechanic's lien is filed. in case you are -- the mechanic's lien keeps the house from being sold until the lien holder, the foreign company is paid. you do not want a mechanic's lien. it's a huge hassle. >> roger asks, i've been living in my apartment for six years. my heater doesn't provide much heat as it used to. the landlord has not repaired or replaced it yet. >> you need to tell your
