good morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. the ash cloud over the kilauea volcano reaches 12,000 feet into the air. the eruption is disrupting air travel and causing power outages. at least three people were killed by falling trees as severe storms swept through the northeast. the storms are also blamed for snarling the evening commute and left tens of thousands of people without power. federal officials say a deadly explosion at a medical building in southern california appears intentional. one person was killed and three injured there in the orange county city. a investigation is under way. and three days before the british royal wedding, super fans are taking their places outside the castle.

they are bracing for a lockdown as early as tomorrow. those are some of our top stories on this wednesday, may 16th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with the latest from the active volcano in hawaii. >> the ash plume over kilauea is rising as much as 12,000 feet in the air and the national weather service issued an alert about ash fall. the volcano's cracks are also emitting poisonous gas. >> meanwhile, frequent explosions rock the area. matt gutman is there. >> reporter: scientists predicted the ash would blacken the sky over kilauea. and a 20th fissure pumping out clouds of sulfur dioxide. officials here declared a condition red with the gas

posing an immediate danger to health. we drove through that area. some of the roads impassable. these plants haven't been burned. it is some of the fumes that have actually killed them over the past ten days of continuous exposure to this hazardous gas. at least five new eruptions since saturday, rattling some 400 residents who stayed. shaking your house. >> oh, yeah. every five seconds, boom, boom. >> reporter: barely a half-mile away there are explosions and rock. sending those boulders hundreds of feet in the air. you can see the heat radiating. much of that lava from kilauea. the lava is finally starting to hit the water table, triggering an explosive eruption which could blast rock and boulders for miles around. the national weather service is warning that the ash and gas

being spewed out by those eruptions is hazardous. people who live nearby should avoid exposure to the outside. they're also warning that this could last for weeks to come. volcanologists say it could smother parts of the island, closing the airports. matt ghut man, abc news, hawaii. >> it is having a widespread impact. most of hawaii's major tourist areas are not currently affected by kilauea, but that could change. >> accuweather's paul williams explains the situation. paul? >> well, diane and kendis, thus far we've been quite fortunate and quite lucky. take a look so you can get a view of what we're talking about here. this is where we have the problem and the wind direction has been carrying the volcanic ash and activity out away from the islands where you have vacationers, so far it's working in our favor. things don't necessarily stay that way. we have changes coming in the

upper atmosphere. here's the big problem. lava flow continuing. this is going to be an ongoing eruption. it's not stopping. we can't say okay we've had enough. we have ground cracks happening, dangerous air quality along with frequent earthquakes. so hilo, throughout the entire island where we have the initial push of the volcano, it's staying active and although the winds are in our favor for now, it won't necessarily stay that way. it could change as early as next week. we're still waiting to see. breaking overnight, a closely-watched senate race is set. lou barletta will face robert casey in november. it could determine the balance of the senate.

and newt bueller will take on kate brown. oregon hasn't elected a republican governor since the '80s. and two parents who lost their daughters in the florida high school massacre are running for county school board. they announced their candidacy the together. they say they want to change the system that they say let the gunman fall through the cracks. the election is at the end of august. overseas, north korea issued another warning overnight saying kim jong un would rather walk away from an upcoming summit with president trump than bow to u.s. pressures and demands. hours earlier, the north pulled out of a high level meeting with south korea. apparently, they're angry about the joint u.s./south korea military drills now under way. and israel is sending truck loads of humanitarian aid to the gaza strip. but nikki haley is coming to israel's defense.

she walked out of an emergency meeting before the palestinian representative had a chance to speak. here's terry moran. >> reporter: ivanka trump and jared kushner bidding israel farewell after opening the u.s. embassy in jerusalem. fanfare and fireworks, their work now behind them. they also left behind this. more clashes throughout gaza and the west bank. in bethlehem, israeli forces firing tear gas from vehicle-mounted launchers. in ramallah we saw protesters hurling stones with slingshots in a running battle that lasted for hours. the palestinians are throwing stones. israelis responding with tear gas and the occasional rubber bullet. there have been several injured. no fatalities. in gaza, two protesters were killed, but it was more a day of grieving the 60 killed here, babies suffocated by tear gas laid to rest.

banks that handled its business. the company has said it would shut down and declare bankruptcy. and an alarming report now about pregnancy. researchers say about 700 women die of pregnancy-related causes every year in the u.s. that's the highest maternal death rate among all developed countries. >> and while those rates have been climbing here they've been falling dramatically elsewhere. brad mielke looks at the reasons why. >> hey, guys, coming at you from the "start here" studio. health care for infants has basically never been better. the mortality rate continues to go down. but in the u.s., only the u.s., the death rate for mothers during childbirth is going up. dr. jennifer ashton is abc's chief medical correspondent and an ob/gyn and is explaining why more mothers are dying as they give birth. >> women are dying in three important time periods, during pregnancy, they're dying unfortunately and shockingly during labor and delivery.

north korea suspending talks with south korea. the north korean central news agency calling the drills an intentional military provocation, this coming days after north korea released three american detainees as a sign of goodwill. >> i think he did this because i really think he wants to do something and bring the country into the real world. >> reporter: now north korea notifying counterparts in south korea that they're canceling their meeting set for wednesday. kim jong un was quoted as saying that he understands the need for these exercises to continue. last month president trump praising kim jong un, claiming that he's ready to denuclearize. >> he really has been very open and i think very honorable. >> reporter: but the state department and white house caught flatfooted. >> we have not heard anything from that government or the government of south korea to indicate that we would not
