can you guess what more songs have in common these days? ♪ are you ready for it and we do say good morning on this busy wednesday. we're going to get to that new threat from north korea in a moment, but first the new images coming in from the extreme weather overnight. >> severe storms slamming the northeast left entire neighborhoods flooded and left a train stranded in four feet of water. that's just one of the many rescue scenes unfolding overnight. at least three deaths are now confirmed along with half a million power outages. overnight a flooding emergency in frederick, maryland, a creek is overflowing its banks after a slow-moving storm dropped six inches of rain. those downpours also left this commuter train stranded in several feet of water forcing dozens of riders to move to the top level of the train car. >> it got kind of shaky, nervous when the conductors came on and said we need everybody to move

because we were in a double deck car. i need everybody to move up into the higher portion of the double deck. that was because of the water was rising and it became kind of -- it was kind of -- got kind of scary. >> reporter: elsewhere rescue teams pulled dozens of people from the floods. this picture from "the frederick news post" shows a child being pulled to safety after he and his family got trapped in a minivan. farther north it is being blamed for three deaths including an 11-year-old girl. police say she and her mother were sitting inside this suv in newburgh, new york, when a tree came crashing on top of them. that city closed every one of its roads because of downed trees, power leans and debris. jim dolan of our new york station is there. >> newburgh is a mess tonight, a mountain of debris here on the ground. all this stuff came flying in off a roof. in fact, some of it is the roof of a building here or was, i guess, and power cables snapped. a tree snapped in half and it all landed on this truck and

crushed it. it was a brief but monstrous storm. >> oh, my god. the trampoline. >> reporter: the high winds sent this trampoline flying across a yard in new windsor, new york, shortly after a tornado warning was issued. at new york's famed grand central station, it was a travel nightmare. thousands of commuters stranded after the metro north railroad was shut down. >> a lot going on on the tracks with i guess, you know, trees and water, i guess flooding and all that. >> reporter: and outside boston trouble on the roads. video from this car shows lightning hitting a street sign. the slow motion shows a direct hit. a lot of cleanup under way this morning. we'll find out if the weather is going to cooperate in your accuweather forecast coming up in just a few minutes. but now to the other big breaking news story from overnight. north korea has issued a new threat that could jeopardize the upcoming summit between president trump and kim jong-un. the regime is apparently upset at some of the demands being made by the white house. let's get right to abc's janai norman with the latest on all of this.

janai, good morning. >> reporter: kendis, good morning. the white house already faced some hurdles in getting the summit set up and a location nailed down, and now another obstacle with north korea threatening to pull out. a setback for president trump's highly anticipated high-stakes summit with north korea. the north angry about annual u.s./south korea joint military exercises now under way. >> we have not heard anything from that government or the government of south korea to indicate that we would not continue conducting these exercises. >> reporter: the state department seemingly caught off guard. north korea abruptly canceling a planned meeting today with south korea and the north central news agency with a message the united states will also have to undertake careful deliberations about the fate of the planned north korea/u.s. summit in light of this provocative military ruckus. all this just a week after president trump welcomed home three american prisoners released by north korea praising kim jong-un. >> we want to thank kim jong-un

who really was excellent to these three incredible people. i really think he wants to do something and bring that country into the real world. >> reporter: president trump making clear his main objective is a denuclearized korean peninsula, but overnight north korean officials in a statement warning, if the u.s. is trying to drive us into a corner to force our unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in such dialogue and cannot put reconsider our proceeding to the dprk/u.s. summit. a top north korean official warning trump not to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors. adding, if he does he will be, quote, more tragic and unsuccessful. kendis. >> never a dull moment with north korea. janai norman for us from d.c., thank you. sticking overseas right now, the united states is defending israel after 60 people died in violent clashes on the gazan border. the u.n. ambassador nikki haley says israel has the right to

protect its border. at a u.n. meeting she denied the protests have anything to do with the opening of the u.s. embassy in jerusalem, and then haley, as you can see there, walked out of that meeting just as the palestinian envoy was about to speak. palestinian officials accused israel of committing a horrific massacre. israel facing international condemnation is now delivering eight truckloads of humanitarian aid to the gaza strip. now to the volcano emergency in hawaii and growing concerns about a massive explosion. the ash plume is now rising 12,000 feet into the air and could pose a threat to public health, also to the power supply and to aviation. abc's matt gutman is there. >> reporter: what you're watching is one of the many eruptions that have been blasting out of kilauea all day today. this is what scientists and volcanologists have been warning of for weeks now. what they're saying is that the lava level in kilauea has subsided to the extent that it has interacted with the water

table causing these steam-driven explosions, and those eruptions are the biggest blasts erupting out of kilauea in nearly a century, 100 years since the 1924 eruption, and what they're saying is that this could smother parts of the island closing down the airports. there is no major threat to human health at this point, but the national weather service saying that exposure to the ash and the gas could be hazardous and they're warning people who live nearby to avoid too much exposure to the outdoors at this point. also, local agencies and authorities are warning people to avoid the roads because that ash could obscure the road and there are other hazards but right now no major concerns for the population, however, those volcanologists say that could last for weeks on end. matt gutman, abc news in the town of volcano, hawaii. >> our thanks to matt there. the fbi is investigating an explosion at a medical building south of los angeles. that is in aliso viejo. one woman killed and three others injured.

a federal official says the explosion appears to be an intentional act. pictures from inside show the force of that blast knocking down walls and sending debris flying into a parking lot. a day-care center across the street had to be evacuated. firefighters were seen there leading small children out by hand, some of them still in their cribs and an official says a package may have caused the blast. the investigation, of course, ongoing. time now for a look at your weather forecast for your wednesday morning. good morning. we still have unsettled weather with scattered showers and thunderstorms from pittsburgh, ohio valley region over towards d.c. and new york. and a pocket of strong storms likely throughout western portions of texas and over towards the southeast we have this low that is springing to the north with drenching thunderstorms with additional humid condition and tropical moisture that is going to keep it waterlogged throughout the entire southeast and for the northwest corner of the country showers and thunderstorms from eugene over towards boise as well and bracing for severe

we're back with this fire that's burning through this historic church in milwaukee. the flames caused the steeple to collapse eventually. the fire apparently started on the roof of the trinity lutheran church where there was ongoing

construction work. no injuries reported. police near pittsburgh are investigating the brutal murder of a young teacher, 32-year-old rachel deltondo was killed in the driveway of her parents' home in aliquippa, pennsylvania, reportedly shot at least ten times. police are hoping a cell phone they recovered can provide some clues. deltondo was suspended from her job last november after police investigated reports she been seen in a parked car with a 17-year-old student. no charges were filed in that case. more than a million kids will be missing school in north carolina today as teachers stage a walkout to demand higher pay and better funding for their classrooms. north carolina is now the sixth state so far this year where teachers have protested pay or pension cuts. meanwhile, a new survey finds 94% of teachers spend money on their own money on classroom supplies shelling out an average of $479 a year. a consumer alert for anyone who shops online. two amazon customers are sharing their stories about getting charged big money to ship some

common items. a woman in georgia says she was charged $7,000 after ordering toilet paper, and a woman in tennessee was charged more than a thousand dollars for shipping paper plates. both women bought the items through third party sellers. the woman who bought the plates says amazon told her that's the rate the company charges for expedited shipping. that seller has since been removed from amazon. but experts say to protect yourself, take the time to look closely at all the charges before you agree to buy anything online. >> good lesson. and a guy in michigan got quite a surprise when he decided to investigate a funny sound coming from his car's air conditioner. some squirrels apparently decided to use it as a stash house. more than 50 pounds of pinecones were crowded around his engine. he said it took him and a friend about 45 minutes to clean that all up, but the car still runs fine. >> well, that's good. that's the good news. >> pinecones are nice and warm now. >> yeah. all right, coming up, a surprise for lebron james last night.

photos with the paparazzi. >> now, royal sources tell abc news that meghan markle is devastated, but they say that she and prince harry are still hoping that he can walk her down the aisle. in the meantime, markle's mother is set to meet queen elizabeth and other members of the royal family over the next few days. lots of drama there. now to a terrifying ordeal in the cockpit of a plane. an airline co-pilot was partially sucked out of the plane after the windshield shattered, and it all happened at 32,000 feet. chaos on board a seemingly routine flight in china. passengers on board this sichuan airlines flight say they heard a loud bang and then the plane which was an airbus a319 dropped sharply. inside the cockpit, the pilot struggling to keep control. in these photos you can see why. one panel of the windshield completely missing. the pilot said it broke without

warning at 30,000 feet in the air instantly sucking part of his co-pilot's body outside the plane. luckily he was belted in. but the missing window filled the cockpit with freezing subzero air. the pilot said instruments started to malfunction, and it was so noisy he couldn't hear the radio. after a few frightening minutes the crew had things under control making an emergency landing 40 minutes later. it's similar to the deadly incident on a southwest jet from new york last month. debris from an engine explosion broke a passenger's window partly sucking her outside. on the chinese jet a flight attendant was treated for minor injuries, and the co-pilot who was partly sucked out suffered just scratches and a sprained wrist. they were very lucky overall. the temperature outside the plane was 40 degrees below zero. the airbus jet has been in service for nearly search years and chinese aviation officials say it had no record of defects and had not undergone any major maintenance before the accident. of course, they're looking into

what took place there. ten workers at dallas-ft. worth airport have been charged with conspiring to smuggle drugs across the country on commercial airlines. they were busted during an fbi sting accused of bypassing security to transport what they thought was meth. agents say the fake drugs were sent to phoenix, charlotte and newark. they say they broke up the operation when one suspect offered to smuggle explosives. the head of the epa will likely face tough questions at a senate hearing today just as a new investigation into his e-mails gets under way. the epa inspector general wants to look at scott pruitt's use of multiple e-mail accounts. his actions including his travel and security expenses are now the subject of 12 separate investigations. now to sports. lebron james did just about everything he could, but it was not enough to beat the celtics. the king poured in 42 points last night in boston, but the celtics overwhelmed cleveland in the second half winning, 107-94. boston now leads that series two games to zero. game three is saturday.
