right now, northbound 880 remains shut down this hour after a deadly crash late last night. it killed three people and five others are hurt. we just learned a short time ago that those five hospitalized include one adult male and four kids. good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. it's wednesday, may 16th. this is a major investigation that's been taking more than seven hours already. >> what a terrible crash. our hearts are heavy any time you hear children are involved. we're hearing a driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana. >> matt keller just got new information from the chp. what do we know? >> reporter: we did just talk

with the chp and they gave us new information. one of the pieces of information is that they are planning on having the whole northbound lanes, all the northbound lanes of 880 open hopefully within the next half hour or so. they may be opening up one lane shortly in the next few minutes. you can see they're trying to move that cadillac escalade off to the side. that is the vehicle that eight people were traveling in last night when this crash happened. it rolled and three people were ejected from that vehicle, three people did die. here's video from the scene from overnight. a huge response from emergency crews on the northbound side of 880 in fremont between auto mall parkway and stevenson boulevard. three people were killed, a woman, a young adult in teens. five others were taken to the hospital including the infant. we did just hear the infant is okay but the other juvenile is

in critical condition. >> prior to that we received calls of a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed recklessly. it appears that vehicle that was report earlier was the cause of the collision. >> the chp says the man at the wheel of a white toyota camry was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana. that driver appears to be okay but is being checked out at the hospital. they have one other vehicle they need to get out of the way. the chp says they hope to have this open by 5:30 this morning. live in fremont, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> we appreciate the update. thank you. we're going to see how traffic is affected so far this morning. seeing any volumes building? >> not yet, reggie. it's still early enough, especially in this location that we're not seeing huge delays. we have surface street options as well. this is where our sig alert is, northbound 880, all traffic forced off at auto mall parkway.

that crash happened north of there at stevenson. not seeing red or yellow approaching that closure. you can use fremont or mission boulevard for an alternate. both of those are still looking good there this morning. we're not seeing any major delays. it want to mention, i know matt said about 5:30 chp hoping to have the northbound side of 880 back open. we're hearing that caltrans maybe does not have enough cones on hand to set up a traffic pattern. maybe they'll totally get it back open. i'll have the latest coming up in a few minutes. everything else quiet this morning. right now let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. >> thanks, alexis. the winds have been the big story, the cool air they've been bringing off the ocean, they're still doing it this morning. 17 mile wind at fairfield. temperatures about two or three degrees cooler this morning. hardly noticeable. with a cooler start, looks like we'll have a cooler than average day.

and blake howell road. wearing a dark blue michigan sweatshirt with a yellow hood. if you see him, please call police. the resignation of a santa clara councilman is official. >> this is after allegations he sexually harassed students at the schools where he taught. >> the next action is to accept the letter of resignation. >> reporter: the santa clara city council voted to accept the resignation. had he not resigned tuesday morning, he would have phased his accusers at tuesday night's meeting. >> he's a sexual predator. he needs to register. he needs to be -- it's just not right. >> i was saddened to hear that i was not the only one, that this was a pattern of behavior. >> reporter: lydia is one of five people who filed complaints with the police department. she was on his campaign staff. other accusers were students.

right now there are hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power, and look at this photo taken in connecticut. lightning strikes forced the evacuation of a control tower at this airport in hartford county. the storm hit so fast it grounded planes and stopped trains. thousands of people stuck in grand central station, crammed into the terminal during rush hour. there is a state of emergency in new york because of severe storms. and if you're heading out east, you want to make sure to check your flight status before you leave this morning. >> want to take you back to our major traffic alert and sig alert this morning in fremont. want to take you live to the scene where it looks like we have a forklift taking away the last of the five vehicles involved in this deadly crash. this happened around 9:30 last night. that's pretty incredible, just lifting that vehicle up and right out of those northbound lanes. they do look like they have the debris swept out of the two left lanes. i believe they'll get to work

quickly to clean up the rest of it. i just checked in with matt keller who is there live this morning. he said they're hoping to have one or two lanes open in just a few minutes and hope to have it fully back open by about 5:30 this morning. i'd say the investigation phase is done. now they're wrapping up with this clean urp and getting close to having things back open. you just saw that last light from the scene they turned out on the freeway. they have a little sweeping to do. in the next few minutes we'll see at least one lane open. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. >> thank you very much, alexis. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's talk temperatures. in the inland east bay valleys dress for low to mid 50s. mt. diablo 39 degrees right now. around the bay we have low to mid 50s until you get up in the hills in los gatos. oakland 54, novato and santa rosa about 52 degrees. here is a look at the golden

gate bridge. it is dry and fog-free right now. sunshine on the beaches, but the temperatures will still be barely in the mid to upper 50s. if you're thinking about doing a little yard work, it going to be good. today, comfortable, if you're on the bay, it will be brighter earlier. here is a look at the peninsula temperatures, 57 at 8:00 . only 61 at noon. clouds and sunshine dominant through 4:00 when we're still in the mid 60s and the chance of a stray shower tapers, ending the day with about 58. this is where we have the best chance of a spray shower or sprinkle. temperatures mostly cloudy and mid to upper 60s. no watches, no warnings right now, but a lot of wet weather along the east coast. so be careful if you're heading that way. for us we've got the slight chance of a stray shower. i'll show you an hour by hour look. let's get it back to reggie and

selected from a pool including women and minorities. amazon's board reportedly opposed the move which outraged employee. amazon's current board is all white, there are only three women. happening today, the senate will vote on a measure about net neutrality. democrats are pushing to repeal changes to net neutrality rules passed by the fcc in december. they have enough support to pass legislation in the senate, but it will likely die in the house. net neutrality prevents broadband providers from blocking or slowing web traffic. those trying to repeal the changes the fcc made last year say they give too much power to internet service providers. 5:15. new details on how dire the housing crisis is in san francisco. "the new york times" reporting more than 6,500 people applied to live in an affordable housing complex that had just 95 units. that means applicants had less than a 2% chance of getting in. the website fortunately grub commons, one, two and three bedroom units. the city started a lottry for

dead as a result of this crash. we still have all lanes of northbound 880 closed. matt keller is on the scene this morning. he's saying they're getting pretty close to opening up the roadway. chp was hoping by 5:30 this morning. if you look in front of these flashing lights, there's still quite a bit of debris. all five of the vehicles involved in this crash have been cleared from the scene. they're waiting for a tow truck company to come to clear the rest of the debris. keeping a close eye on this this morning. for now everything is shut down and all traffic forced off at at toe mall parkway. seeing a little bit of a delay starting to form. that's the irs if time here this morning. other than that we're quiet. 50 minutes westbound 580 tracy to dublin. let's take a look at walnut creek where it's mostly cloudy and about 52 degrees right now.

it is dry. there is the possibility of sprinkles, even a stray shower today with a mixture of sun and clouds and cool conditions once that chance will taper tonight, temperatures will cool back to this morning's levels, and then the weekend, we've got a little warming trend that will bring us back to average. here we are hour-by-hour, 7:00 in the morning, you can see the gray to white. that's the cloud cover. the green, that's the rain. notice it's best up across the north bay. with that counterclockwise rotation, we could have a shower just about anywhere during lunch. it's going to be so light we need to take an umbrella. you may need the sunglasses from time to time as the cloud deck will not be a complete overcast today. by 8:00 the chance tapers as we lose a lot of the heat of the day. notice we're still getting a slight chance during the overnight hours of a drizzle, maybe a stray shower. by tomorrow afternoon the chance is over. the precipitation, if you get anything, .01 inch.

let's get it back to reggie. a plan to help residents of a santa rosa mobile home park is stuck in a catch 22. a non-profit called burbank housing has proposed converting horse stables at the sonoma county fairgrounds into temporary housing. 44 mobile homes remained standing after the north bay wildfires. homeowners say insurance won't pay out for them. because the mobile home park is still red tagged, they can't live there. many of the residents are low income or retired seniors. 5:34. new developments in the central subway fiasco. san francis the company called conquest has several contracts with sfmta. this is video of chinatown where they claim they installed standard strengh instead of

high strength. an investigation found the contractor did not install the wrong rail. a computer outage causing outages for patients and employees. they're saying the outage started monday night and is forcing doctors and nurses to enter patient information manually. because of this issue, some surgeries and appointments are being rescheduled. if you have an appointment, you should plan to arrive as scheduled unless you get contacted by your doctor's office. this morning the san francisco police commission is effectively paralyzed after a surprising board of supervisors vote last night. the board rejected the reappointment of joseph marshal and sonia melara. without the two, the commission has only three members which is not enough to hold meetings or make any decisions. their work includes taser use policy, doj resforms about police shoot tension and searching for a new police chief if bill scott gets lapd's top

job. >> they've done a great job for the residents of san francisco. this is all politics. >> instead of rubber stamping and going the easy route which is what mayor farrell was proposing, i think we need to put a little more thought and energy into selecting highly motivated new candidates. >> other supervisors who rejected the reappointment says they think the new mayor should make those decisions after the june election. a big break in an identity theft ring that victimized almost 30 people in the south bay. a stolen credit card used at this hilton garden inn in cupertino helped crack the case. officers arrested five people. they say the suspects had stolen credit cards, checkbooks, electronic card readers and meth. investigators san jose they'll contact all the victims they know about. happening today, 15 california officials will meet with president trump in d.c. to talk about immigration. among them two law enforcement officials from the central

valley. sheriff adam christian son and fresno county sheriff margaret mimms. both publicly critical of sanctuary policies which restrict cooperation with federal immigration officials. a white house official says they will strategize on how to oppose the state's sanctuary law. let's get you the latest on what's happening in hawaii. there is an ash fall advisory on hawaii's big island. a new burst of volcanic ash spewing from kilauea. we've seen huge plumes that have risen more than 12,000 feet above sea level. a new fissure opened as well, bringing the total number of cracks to 20. there's a code red for air quality. the hazardous sulfur dioxide is being called, quote, an immediate danger to health. there's major concern this morning. here is the deal. when the lava finally hits the water table, it could trigger a major eruption according to

scientists. that eruption could blast rock and boulder for miles around. everyone on high alert. they say this is just the beginning and the eruption could actually last for several weeks. natasha? >> thank you, jessica. we're staying on top of a developing story. southern california investigators san jose a deadly explosion that rocked a medical office building in orange county wuk likely intentional. the blast in aliso viejo yesterday killed a woman and injured three other people. a nearby day care had to be evacuated. first responders helped take children to a noosh target store. investigators think the explosion may have come from a package. they're still sifting through the blast debris to try to find the exact source. i want to take you back to the scene of our major traffic alert in fremont. matt keller is there live for us. northbound 880 is still fully closed from auto mall parkway up to stevenson. they have been waiting for a tow company to arrive to help with the rest of the debris. all the vehicles have been towed
