she's feeling great after undergoing surgery. she's still recovering from a kidney procedure at walter reed in maryland but is looking forward to going home. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, may 17th. from abc news, this is "world news now." and we begin this morning with north korea's threat to cancel next month's summit with president trump. >> the north says it will not accept the precondition that it gives up the nuclear program. south korea this morning is trying to calm things down. >> but the trump administration seems to be shrugging off the threat. jonathan karl has the story. >> reporter: if president trump is rattled by the latest threats from north korea, he's not showing it. >> we'll see what happens. we'll see. >> reporter: earlier, press secretary sarah sanders said the latest move by north korea came as no surprise. >> this is something that we fully expected. >> reporter: but the change in tone is traumatic, from the all

smiles meetings between kim jong un and the secretary of state to an angry statement by north korea's chief negotiator, saying he is totally disappointed by the extremely unjust recent comments by u.s. officials. singled out the american demand that north korea give up all its nuclear weapons before getting anything in return. >> we want to see the denuclearization process so completely under way that it's irreversible. >> reporter: north korea now says such talk could scuttle the summit. if the u.s. is trying to drive us into a corner to force our unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in such dialogue. the north koreans seem particularly upset by national security adviser john bolton, who called on them to do what libya did more than a decade ago. >> we had very much in mind the libya model from 2003-2004. >> reporter: the libya model?

>> we have people coming into the country, trying to come in. we're stopping a lot of them. but we're taking people out of the country. you wouldn't believe how bad these people are, these aren't people. these are animals. >> the president made those comment after a california sheriff complained about being unable to deport known gang members. california governor jerry brown fired back at the president tweeting that, quote, president trump is lying about immigration, lying about crime and lying about the laws of california. and the president's lead attorney, rudy giuliani tells cnn even if robert mueller finds evidence of wrongdoing he will not indict donald trump. he says they acknowledge they cannot indict a sitting president. but legal experts point out that's not a law, just a policy followed by the justice department. buildings and roads at hawaii's national park have been damaged.

officials expect the quakes to be less frequent. lava is not coming out of the large cracks, but toxic gases are pouring out. in the meantime, winds are shifting and ash may drift toward the city of hilo. matt gutman with more. >> reporter: you can see that line of fissures, all of them appear to be active today, billowing that smoke, steam, ash and sulfur dioxide. you can smell it right now. the cloud that they're creating above is about 10,000, 12,000 feet high. this is very much an active scene. and the concern is that the sulfur dioxide blanket is heading toward the populated areas of hawaii right now. >> quite a scene there in hawaii. lava and rocks from kilauea have destroyed more than two dozen homes and forced 2,000 residents to evacuate.

the tait is preparing for mass evacuations if new lava flows cut off more roads. we're learning odd new details about a massacre carried out by an american soldier in afghanistan. lawyers say medication is to blame. >> brad mielke looked into it. >> this was a tragic story. sergeant robert bales bursting into homes murdering 16 afghan civilians. he was sentenced to life without parole. but now they say he snapped because of the drug he was given for malaria. this is a drug that could be prescribed to you. i asked what happened here. they're saying this is because of a malaria drug? >> exactly. this is a drug prescribed to troops, peace corps volunteers, to tourists. and there are cases dating back over a decade about really scary side effects that have happened from this drug.

wounded the 19 year old suspect who allegedly fired shots at a graduation rehearsal. matthew milby is held on bond and currently in the hospital. no one else was injured. an attempt to avoid an accident outside dallas, texas led to a fiery scene. a dump truck burst into flames. it swerved to avoid a stopped car but slammed into the median and caught fire. amazingly, that truck driver was not hurt. >> incredible video there. the phrase goes no guts no glory for bartolo colon. it was a case of big gut, no injury. >> the texas ranger, known as "big sexy" is crediting his mid section for saving him from the disabled list. he took a 101-mile-per-hour line drive smack to the belly. >> wow! >> check it out. >> he calmly picks up the ball and gets the batter out. >> holy cow. so colon was laughing. he said i have a big belly, so i can handle it.

politicians to flatter him and praise his reckless policies changes nothing. as the sanctuary debate continues to play out, abc news has learned the trump administration is now considering separating children caught crossing illegally and possibly housing them at military bases. natalie burnell, abc news, los angeles. president trump's financial papers shows that he paid michael cohen for, quote, expenses. it makes no specific mention about the $130,000 in hush money that cohen paid to the porn actress stormy daniels. just last month, trump publicly denied knowing anything about cohen's payment to daniels. the head of the government ethics office says trump should have disclosed information last year and is referring the matter to the justice department.

turns out donald trump jr. admitted to the meeting in trump tower in order to get dirt on hillary clinton. trump jr. said he didn't think he did anything wrong by meeting with that lawyer, and he insisted that he never told his father the meeting was taking place. the white house is brushing off north korea's threats to cancel the summit between kim jong un and president trump. a senior north korean diplomat says his country has no interest in a one-sided meeting to pressure north korea to abandon its nuclear weapons, but the trump administration says it's not surprised by the threat. >> this is something that we fully expected. the president is very used and ready for tough negotiations, and if they want to meet, we'll be ready. and if they don't, that's okay too. >> the summit is scheduled for next month in singapore. sarah sanders says if it doesn't happen, the u.s. will continue, to, quote, put maximum pressure on north korea.
