ss. live where you live, this is abc7 news. school friends are mourning the 9- and 14-year-old sisters who died with their mother on a horrific crash on interstate 880. the driver accused of causing the crash while high on marijuana is in court today. i'm kristen sze. they reveal the reason the mother and two daughters were in the car when the deadly crash happened. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield has more. >> reporter: the family in the escalade was coming home from a full day of celebrating a birthday. friends say the family started the day at the zoo, that it's a blended family, a couple with

six daughters. >> from the zoo, they wanted to do cup cakes and presents on the beach, so they drove to santa cruz, and it was on the way home when they were hit. >> reporter: amy was best friends with noelle johnson, on the right, killed. two of the six girls also died. 14-year-old and a 9-year-old. one of the girls is still in the hospital. amy says noelle adored being a mother. >> birthday parties were extravagant and put her life and heart and soul into being a mom to those babies, and she was a great friend too. i have a lot of years of friendship with her, and it's hard. it's a hard loss. >> reporter: classmates struggling with the loss. parents are having tough conversations with their kids. >> all you can do is hug them and cry with them, you know, like, why did this happen, mom? i'm, like, you know, things like this just happen, you know, there's no explanation.

>> reporter: police say the 21-year-old tran caused the accident on 880 saying he was driving recklessly and speeding and under the influence of marijuana. he's in jail. >> i'm angry. i want to go to the arraignment. i want to just look at him and just say, what -- how did you do this? why did you make that decision? >> reporter: administrators at both girls' schools brought in grief counselors to help students deal with the losses, and they encourage parents to be extra supportive of their children right now. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. new this morning, oakland police look for the driver behind a deadly hit-and-run this morning near 98th and bancroft avenues. this is the aftermath. a white car on its side wrapped around a pole. a black car with damage to the front side of the car. one man dead at the scene, two more taken to the hospital. one driver of the car ran off before the police got there.

breaking these in east san jose. there's a double homicide police are investigating. there was a shooting at 10:00 last night on sierra road. aump officers found a man and woman dead with a gunshot wound. identities have not been released. this is the ninth and tenth homicides of the year. former girlfriend of reuben foster testified this morning recanting her claim he attacked her in february. today, a judge will be at the trial, and we are live at the santa clara courthouse in san jose there's proof foster is innocent. >> reporter: yes, that's true, kristen, what an interesting day in court. the alleged victim's attorney told the courtroom she advised the cleeient not to take the stand, not to testify, and invoke fifth amendment rights.

this is for the preliminary hearing. the linebacker is charged with felony domestic violence, forcefully attempting to dissuade a witness, and possession of an assault weapon. the second witness called by prosecutors, foster's former girlfriend was asked what happened on february 11th, emotionally said he broke up with her that morning and she chased him to get him to talk, and at one point, she tried to hit him and threw her phone at him, but foster never put hands on her. that morning, she call 911 three times saying her boyfriend was beating her up, but that it was a lie and she was angry for the breakup. she said he would not have a job anymore. she wanted to sue him, calling it a money scheme and testified her injuries came from a fight the night before in san francisco, and said it was a traffic dispute with two women. they got out of the calls and fought with one of them for several minutes before bystanders broke it up. she said a friend has video of the fight posted on instagram.

this preliminary hearing is expected to last a few more hours and the judge decides whether or not the case continues on to trial. my colleague, abc 7 east chris wynn is watching all the testimony with the latest online and later editions of abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. sky7 above the scene of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian in redwood city this morning. this is along the southbound lanes of el camino near james avenue. there's not much information now about the condition of the pedestrian or the driver or whether there were any arrests involved. we do know the southbound lanes in the area were temporarily closed. san francisco's mayor is tackling heroin use in the city. right now, he's announcing plans for a special medical team that will treat the homeless with a drug to stop aarheroin cravings. the mayorments to set aside $6 million in the budget to fund the team over two years. trained professionals would

prescribe buprenorphine to hundreds of homeless drug addicts. they tested the drug and 60% of 200 people who began treatment are still working on staying clean. today, the salvation army will pass out food, socks, and hygiene kits to the homeless in san francisco. this was a video taken from the bart station this month shows how dire the situation is. people in need line the station corridors, and army officers and volunteers will serve the area today between 1:30 and 4:00 in the afternoon. a south bay teacher accused of sexual harassment will not be fired. our media partner, bay area news group, reports he'll remain a civics teacher at santa clara high school. he resigned from the city council and withdrew from the county supervisor race after several women, including former students, stay he behaved

inappropriately towards them. he denies the allegations. many parents are unhappy with the school district's decision to keep caserta on staff. in response, the district says they are creating a sexual harassment task force educating parents and students about recognizing harassment, how to report it, and they'll streamline harassment reporting processes. the head of the san francisco police officers association has stepped down. sources tell abc 7 news that marty halleran talked of retirement this fall, but apparently decided to act sooner. he was the head of the association since 2013. the police union has been negotiating a new contract with the city for several months. after they failed to come to an agreement, they went to arbitration and a new deal was reached two weeks ago. new developments, a lead paint maker agreed to pay $ev60 million to remove toxic material from homes in california. the settlement with nl

industries ends two decades of litigation. the money will pay for the removal of paint in several cities and counties that join the public nuance lawsuit including san francisco, santa clara, and more, and nl industries does not acknowledge wrong doing in the deal. the case is pending against two other lead paint makers, sherwin williams and con-agra. police want help in identifying this man as the pit bulls bit four people and another dog sunday at mission delores park in the grassy area above the basketball court. thor authorities say they attacked a dog named bloom. four people who tried to separate the animals were bit. the owner took off with his pit bulls before officers got to the scene. >> in my mind, you'd stay around to make sure that the dog is okay and if the other dog o attack dog needed medical

two people including a student have died after a horrific crash involving a school bus and a dump truck in new jersey. police say the bus was full of middle schoolers on their way to a field trip about 50 miles west of new york city. the bus was ripped apart and ended up on its side. investigators have not released details on what led up to the crash. new developments in the investigation into a deadly explosion at a southern california medical building. the victim's former boyfriend, who was also her business partner, has been arrested. 59-year-old steven biel is due in federal court this afternoon. he was arrested yesterday on suspicion of possessing an unregistered destructive device, but has not been charged in tuesday's explosion that killed
