she just put her life and her heart and soul into being a mom to those babies. >> mourning the loss of a mother and two young girls in a tragic accident. the family heading home from a birth bra day celebration when hit by another car. thanks for joining us i'm larry beil. >> police say dang tran was driving under the influence of marijuana and caused the crash. he was set to appear in court but the hearing was postponed. laura anthony is live in dublin outside the alameda county superior court. >> the district attorney here apparently needed more time to decide exactly what charges will be filed in this case. though his mother and several others showed up at the courthouse here this afternoon. the man accused of causing a deadly crash while under the influence of marijuana will wait another day before making the court appearance. 21-year-old dang tran is expected to be arraigned on three counts of gross vehicular

manslaughter among other possible charges. according to the chp tran was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed on interstate 680 near stephenson tuesday night when his car caused a chain reaction accident. three people were killed including 39-year-old knowle johnson and two youngsters, 14-year-old kristy limas and her 9-year-old sister brook. all part of a larger blended family, according to the chp none of those killed were wearing seatbelts. johnson's close friend told abc 7 news the family was traveling home from a birthday celebration for a 4-year-old. johnson her boyfriend chris and six daughters were riding in a cadillac when it was struck. one of the children, one of the surviving children remains hospitalized. tran is now expected to be arraigned here in dublin sometime tomorrow. in dublin, laura anthony abc 7

news. >> laura. thank you. we hear today from a close family friend who reveals the heart breaking reason the mother and two daughters were in the car when this that deadly crash happened. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield has more. >> the family in the car was come home from a full day of celebrating a birthday. friends say the family started the day at the zoo. that it's a blened family, a couple with six daughters. >> from the zoo they wanted to do cupcakes and presents on the beach. they drove to santa cruz. and it was on their way home when they got hit. >> amy sates she was best friends with knowle johnson pictured on the right who was killed. two of the six girls died. 14-year-old kristy limas and a 9-year-old. amy says knowle adored being a mother. >> birthday parties were extravagant and put her life

into being a mom to the babies and she was a great friend too. i have a lot of years of friendship with her. and it's hard. it's a hard loss. >> classmates and kristy and brooks struggle with the loss. parents in manteca are having tough conversations with kid. >> all you can do is just hug them and cry with them, you know. she was like why did it happen, mom. >> i'm like, you know, things like this just happen. there is no explanation. >> i am angry. i want to go to the arraignment. i want to look at him and say, how did you do this? why did you make that decision. >> administrators as both girls' schools brought in grieve counselors to help deal with losses and they are encouraging parents to be supportive of children right now. abc 7 news. well ling take a look at this. yeah, drivers on highway 101 saw this this afternoon after a massive brush fire broke out next the roadway.

this dramatic video from the scene in woodside road. it burned in dense bushes and trees next to the southbound lanes. it appeared the fire started next to a homeless encampment. >> and sky7 flew would have the financial district after an unmarked police car collided with a woman riding a motorized scooter. investigators believe the woman turned into the path of the ford and a. the scoot rider refused medical attention after paramedics arrived at the scene. san jose police are investigating a double homicide in a quiet rural area in the eastern foothills. the bodies of a man and woman were found inside a home on sierra road each with a single gunshot wounds. identities are not released. they say there are no suspects in the ninth and tenth homicides of the year. new details this afternoon about the package bombings at an orange county business complex. the former boyfriend of the woman killed is now in federal

custody. prosecutors charged 59-year-old steven beil with suspicion of possession of an unregistered destructive device after agents found two devices in his home. but they say the charges have no connection with tuesday's election. beil's son told the press that his father and the woman killed in the blast, eldika. residents on the hawaii big island are on edge today. explosions continue from kilauea volcano and one was really big. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez with the latest. >> reporter: explosives eruption at the summit of kilauea. steam and ash spewing 30,000 feet in the air. people living nearby ordered to shelter in place. >> it's a short-lived event. it may have relieved pressure temporarily. we expect similar events could

and desires. >> he has been heroin free three and a half years. the health department says nearly 60% of those who began the medication are still working on being clean. to better understand the crisis here in san francisco, the health department estimates there are 11,000 heroin addicts who use needles. public works picks up more than 12,000 discarded needles every month. these needles are collected mainly from homeless hot spots and encamp mts. mary howe is with homeless youth alliance. she has made it a habit to pick up needles on her own. >> if we are solving the issue and make a den we have to be creative. >> the plan costs $6 million and included in the mayor's june 1st budget proposal. doctors attending the press conference said the biggest misconception is that homeless don't care about health or getting off heroin. they do care but they can't.

and this is called a game changer. in the newsroom, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> thank you. the house ways and means committee passed bipartisan health bills today to address the opioid crisis. the bills included two provisions co-authored by napa kmds mike thompson. he says the legislation helps remove bar years to care and increase treatment options for those suffering from addiction. and a child and adult were killed after a school bus collided with a dump trunk in western new jersey. filled with fifth graders on the way to field trip. the crash ripped the undercarriage off the base. 11 people were hospitalized with earnings. the cause of the crash is under investigation. it's been one year since the start of the robert mueller probe into russian meddling in the 2016 election. yesterday the senate intelligence committee stated once again that russia did interfere in the u.s. election. abc news reporter serena marshall has the latest.
