making news in america this morning, tragedy on the highway. a deadly school bus crash. the impact so violent, the front end sheared off. this morning, whatefore the crash. it's one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in u.s. history. the disappearance of a hijacker who escaped a plane with a parachute and $200,000 in ransom money. this morning we meet the man who says he knows the true identity of d.b. cooper. royal countdown. prince harry and meghan markle now just 24 hours away from the big day. we're live at windsor castle with wedding rehearsal and the mother of the bride's big meeting today with the family. those stories, plus nowhere

to hide. this hunter gets the scare of his life, and we hear from the man who shot the video. a good friday morning, everyone. we begin with that tragic school bus crash in new jersey. a teacher and a student have died and several children are in the hospital. >> and overnight we learned what may have been the cause of this violent collision on the highway. this morning sources tell abc news authorities are investigating whether the driver of this school bus filled with fifth graders on a class trip made an illegal u-turn just before colliding with a dump truck in new jersey. the impact so violent, it sheared off the front end of the bus ripping away the undercarriage leaving the steering wheel exposed. police declaring a mass casualty incident. >> i'm going to need about 20 ambulances. i have a full school bus and i have victims on the ground. >> reporter: anxious parents rushed to the school hoping for news about their children.

>> i lost it and just came running here. >> my heart literally dropped. it was like the worst nightmare. >> reporter: the highway littered with debris. one bag still hanging from this bus window. one student says they were hanging from the seat belts as police arrived. >> just like the parents when you hear that call, for first responders it's the same thing. when you hear that call about an accident involving children, your heart just drops into your stomach. >> reporter: officers used dogs to search the scene and nearby woods for survivors. back on the highway, the blown out windshield was recovered here and that dump truck that rear ended the bus finally came to a stop 600 feet from the crash scene. police say the students were wearing seat belts. the bus driver survived and is cooperating with authorities. the investigation focusing on whether he made that illegal u-turn after missing his exit on the highway. and it appears the bus driver became separated from some other buses that were on the trip. in addition to the teacher and

the student that were killed, some 43 others were injured. the company that owns the dump truck was involved in at least seven crashes in the last two years and received more than 130 violations. we're following a developing story from south florida. reports of shots fired at the trump national golf resort in doral. police say they have a suspect in custody, and nobody else was hurt. there were reports that a police-involved shooting. officials say there is no longer any threat. well, breaking news overseas right now. authorities in paris say they have thwarted a possible attack with ricin. french authorities tracking extremist activity on social networks have arrested two brothers. the men reportedly possessed directions on how to make poison with ricin. and we turn now to north korea and a new move by president trump to get kim jong-un to the negotiating table. north korea has threatened to cancel their summit next month, but now president trump is promising protection for the north korean dictator. abc's janai norman has the latest. good morning, janai. protection, what's that supposed to mean? >> reporter: right, diane. good morning.

so, as you know, it is north korea that's calling into question whether this summit next month will actually happen and now president trump offering those protections to the dictator if they can make a deal. the historic summit now in jeopardy. north korea signaling the sit-down with the u.s. may be off. but president trump says nothing has changed. >> we have not been told anything. we're just reading stories like you are. >> reporter: north korean officials criticizing the u.s. angry over ongoing joint military exercises with south korea and pyongyang further infuriated that national security adviser john bolton called on them to follow in the footsteps of libya. >> we have very much in mind the libya model from 2003/2004. >> reporter: that signals a regime change to north korea. as libyan dictator moammar gadhafi was ousted from power and murdered in the streets after libya gave up its nuclear program but president trump not mincing words clearly correcting bolton. >> well, the libyan model isn't

a model that we have at all when we're thinking of north korea. in libya we decimated that country. this would be with kim jong-un something where he'd be there, he'd be in his country, he'd be running his country. >> reporter: the businessman president demonstrating the art of making a deal offering kim jong-un reassurances but also a warning. >> now, that model would take place if we don't make a deal most likely, but if we make a deal, i think kim jong-un is going to be very, very happy. he'll get protections that will be very strong. >> reporter: and president trump says there's been a big difference with north korea since kim jong-un met a second time with chinese president xi but president trump says his attitude about next month's summit is whatever happens happens, diane. >> all right. janai norman for us live from d.c. thanks, janai. now to the breaking news on the royal wedding. the palace says prince charles will walk meghan markle down the aisle. there had been some speculation that her mother who is meeting the queen today was going to do the honor. >> but now we've learned that

charles will, indeed, step in. maggie rulli has been following the preparations for us at windsor winds. maggie. >> reporter: good morning, diane and kendis. can you guys believe it's tomorrow? i feel like i've been waiting forever for this day, and if i think i'm excited, then i met the hundreds of people already camping out here on castle grounds. they've been here for days, and the ones we speak to tell us that the long, cold, hard nights are worth it just so they can be the first ones to catch a glimpse of the new royal couple. >> i just love them. >> reporter: from die-hard royal fans camping out for days. look, you've met harry. >> i met a prince. >> reporter: to first-timers. >> prince harry and meghan. >> reporter: it seems like everyone has caught royal fever. >> you guys all look fabulous. >> reporter: final preparations for the big day are under way. the royal couple arriving to windsor thursday part of a long full day of rehearsals. >> we're watching every foot and nothing must slide. it must be perfect.

>> reporter: the cake is baking. >> so it tastes delicious, i hope. i think. >> reporter: and the two families are meeting. meghan has announced that her dad will not be at the wedding due to medical issues but meghan's mom, doria radlan, has already met the in-laws, the groom's father prince charles and camilla for tea. she also met prince william and kate and today she's meeting the queen. >> i'm sure the queen found it hugely exciting to meet doria. she'll have heard a lot about her and learning more about her granddaughter-in-law will be very much a part of what would interest the queen. >> reporter: as the families prepare so does the public. you can buy pretty much anything with harry and meghan's face on it from flags to t-shirts, even the face of royalty itself. store owners say they are flying off the shelves. local experts say all those memorabilia sales and extra tourism could boost the economy by nearly $1.5 billion. there was that big question of ho is going to walk meghan markle down the aisle and like you mentioned we now know it will be prince charles standing

by her side. she actually asked the prince to be there for her and he responded by saying i would be pleased to introduce ms. markle into the royal family. some people thought it may be her mom. some people thought she'd walk herself but now we know it's prince charles. >> now it's time for a look at your weather on this friday. more heavy rain is expected in the mid-atlantic states today. already flooded areas of maryland could see another four inches. down in florida, video captured a lightning strike at a home in daytona beach. a direct hit but no one was hurt. looking at the radar you see rain still lingering across much of the east. more severe storms are also expected from the dakotas to kansas. as for temps you'll see a lot of the nation warming up in the 80s, even the 90s in some areas but staying pretty cool in the northeast. we're looking at 62 in new york.

we're back with new video of the eruption from kilauea volcano, the latest one, at least. the ash cloud now reaching some five miles into the air, higher than mt. everest. now, because of that ash, authorities on the big island have handed out 18,000 masks to help people breathe. some residents have reported itchy eyes and skin irritation. lava is flowing again from some of the cracks that had become inactive. abc's matt gutman is there.

>> reporter: you can see all that lava fountaining here. now, this is fissure 17. some of the fountaining has gone hundreds of feet in the air. what you're seeing over there and those roars are steam and gas flying out of these vents. that stuff is 2,000 degrees. >> wow, impressive there. and people on the big island have been told to stay indoors. officials say this activity could continue for several more days. some 39 homes and buildings have now been destroyed. and police have arrested the ex-boyfriend of a southern california spa owner killed when a package bomb exploded in her hands. steven beal is facing charges related to explosives found in his home, but he has not been charged with the bombing in aliso vio. investigators say ey belve the attack was targeted but they don'have a motive. and a police officer in hartford, connecticut, is in critical condition after she was stabbed in the neck. police say the officer was responding to a tenant/landlord dispute when the tenant put her in a headlock and stabbed her repeatedly. two nearby maintenance workers stopped the attack.

cooper. well, it has eluded authorities for nearly half a century until possibly today. there's a new investigation that claims to have cracked the 47-year-old case. >> an author from michigan says he knows who d.b. cooper was and where he's been all these years. >> what was the note about? >> i can't remember right there. this is a hijack and i've got explosives. >> reporter: that's the voice of a man who's allegedly behind one of america's most infamous unsolved mysteries. >> so you did hand her the note and since she kind of put it in her pocket like, she said, i can't believe you are actually hijacking this airplane. >> and i says, i can't believe it neither, but i'm serious. >> reporter: back in 1971 a man who claimed to be dan cooper threatened to blow up a northwest airlines flight. he disappeared after jumping out of the plane over oregon with a parachute and $200,000 in ransom money. now 47 years later in a new memoir titled "d.b. cooper & me," a michigan author

claims he knew the infamous hijacker. >> in 2000 i told walt i suspected him of being d.b. cooper. he would not say yes or no right away, but over the next eight years, walt and i had many phone calls to slowly unravel this story of the hijacking. >> reporter: carl laurin believes without a doubt that d.b. cooper was actually a man named walter reca. laurin says reca was his best friend and a former military paratroor. in his memoir, laurin said reca ultimately confessed to being d.b. cooper releasing audio recordings he made of his friend allegedly giving details about the crime. >> i tied the money on to me, took my belt from around my waist, tied it around my raincoat, put the money in there, buttoned it all the way up to my neck. >> and put the parachute on. >> yeah. >> reporter: walter reca passed away in michigan in 2014. as for the fbi's investigation, it was suspended two years ago. the fbi will not confirm whether walter reca was ever a suspect.

>> fascinating. indeed. the tsa has confirmed it has created a secret watch list for unruly airline passengers. officials say it was triggered by an alarming spike in assaults on tsa officers at airport checkpoints. the tsa administrator told lawmakers it simply alerts agents to passengers with a history of troubling behavior and does not automatically deny a person from boarding a flight. he also acknowledged that passengers may not be aware that they're on the list. in medical news now, a new warning today for teenagers who use e-cigarettes. doctors say a teenager in pennsylvania developed respiratory failure and a condition called wet lung after vaping for only three weeks. she had to be put on a breathing machine. now, experts say it's likely that chemicals in the e-cigarettes caused the lung inflammation triggering that condition. they say it's the first reported case of its kind, and they warn the long-term health effects of vaping are still unknown. in sports, the nba playoffs resume tomorrow night with the
