lockdown as students come to grips with the horror of this morning. abc news reporter has the latest. >> reporter: the gunfire started as the school day began, a student said she saw someone with a gun in her art class. >> there was someone that walked in with a shotgun and started shooting. >> reporter: teachers told students to run as police converged on the scene. ambulances and life flight helicopters arrived too. >> a girl with a bandage on the kneecap. she was shot in the knee. >> reporter: there's multiple fatalities r a fatalities, students moved to the gym to reunite with parents. >> called, mom, there's shots. i immediately turned around, said, i'm coming, and i stayed with her on the phone the whole time to stay calm and quiet. and until the police let her out. >> reporter: president trump addressed the shooting at the white house. >> we grieve for the terrible loss of life and send our support and love to everyone

affected by this absolutely horrific attack to the students, families, teachers, and personnel at santa fe high. >> reporter: most of the dead were students, so is the shooter who is now in police custody. police found explosives in the building and in adjacent areas. >> i shouldn't be going through this at my school. this is my daily life. i shouldn't have to feel like that, and i feel scared to even go back. >> reporter: abc news, new york. >> this is now the deadliest school shooting since parkland, florida. 17 people died in majorie stoneman douglas high school february 14th. cruz was charged with 17 counts of murder and 17 accounts of attempted murder. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. the abc news 7 news app sent out a push alert when word broke of the shooter this morning in

morning. shots shattered a window and a passenger side door bent the wrong way. >> we had santa cruzpd, chp, fire department, our deputies, everyone heard the call and started to respond. >> reporter: two deputies were patrolling the area and encountered a man and woman, a confrontation took place, and at least one of the two deputies fired, hitting one. no shots fired by the suspects, but a deputy was injured. >> the deputy was treated in hospital and has since been, i believe, released. the suspect in the shooting is currently out of hospital. >> reporter: the sheriff's department is expected to hold a press conference at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon expecting more details on what happened here early this morning. reporting live in santa cruz, abc 7 news. >> thank you. the driver charged in a deadly accident on interstate 880 is expected to enter a plea. highway patrol investigators

believe dan tran was high on marijuana, driving recklessly hitting a cadillac escalade in freemont. it killed a mother and her boyfriend's two daughters. five others injured, and one, a child, remains in hospital. developing news, freemont police have a brash of gold chain robberies targeting women of east inian decent. this woman is getting robbed there, filling up the gas tank on may 6th. investigators say there's been a 50% jump in the number of gold chain snatchings this year and six incidents this month alone. investigators believe this man may have committed two of the robberies preying on mothers picking up their children from paterson elementary schools. the highly an tticipated kylie jenner makeup shop has opened in san francisco, but
