informant to question two trump campaign associates about their contacts with russians, but there is no evidence the fbi infiltrated the trump campaign. rosenstein made light of his high-profile predicament. >> deputies attorney general are very low profile, don't have to be recognized. >> reporter: he has now ordered the watchdog to look into the president's claims, saying if anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants of a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes we need to know about it and take appropriate action. the president received a friendly warning from his ally, chris christie. cautioning attacks on the investigation could backfire. >> i've told him many times that there's no way to make the investigation shorter but there are lots of ways to make it longer. and he's executed on a lot of those ways to make it longer. >> reporter: it's highly unusual for a president to demand an investigation like this and it puts the deputy attorney general in a bind when he has worked for months with the very real threat that he could be fired at any time.

the governor of texas starts hosting safety round tables. in the wake of the shooting at santa fe high school. classes won't resume for another week. officials say the community needs time to grieve for the eight students and two teachers who were killed. the sheriffs says officers cornered the shooter in about four minutes, but the attack lasted about half an hour. the 17-year-old is on suicide watch. his father says he had been bullied at the school. meanwhile, j.j. watt visited with survivors of the shooting and said he would pay for the funeral of those killed. >> and the aftermath of the shootings here in the u.s. has become familiar. >> as brad mielke has been talking about. >> as devastating as the shooting was, the details sound so distressingly familiar. of course it wasn't always this way. pierre thomas has studied gun violence more than anyone at abc news. so i asked him, how do we get to the point where this feels

customs and border protection officials are looking into a controversial encounter between a patrol agent and two women in montana. the agent questioned the women because they were speaking spanish. abc's kayna whitworth with the details. >> reporter: a montana woman says she's considering legal action after this interaction with a border patrol agent. >> i came in here and saw that you guys are speaking spanish, which is very unheard of in this area. >> reporter: she and her friend who are both u.s. citizens were talking to each other in spanish at a convenience store when the uniformed border patrol agent interrupted them. >> he asked where i was born. so i look at him, and i say are you serious? he's like, yes, i'm serious. >> reporter: the store, in montana, is 30 miles south of the u.s./canada border. border patrol agents have a broad authority to operate within 100 miles of a border. though they cannot initiate stops without reasonable suspicion of an immigration

violation or crime. u.s. border is investigating the incident and say he used a poor choice of words. and hawaii is facing another hazard from the kilauea volcano. laze, lava and haze, a deadly mix that happens when lava hits the ocean. it can cause eye, lung and skin irritation. authorities have warned the public. the coast guard is monitoring and helping keep people away from the area. meanwhile lava is flowing near a power plant. workers shut down that plant on monday to prevent the release of toxic gases. sinkhole alley in central florida is living up to its name. four sinkholes opened near retirement community in one day. no evacuations have been ordered. one opened in front of a home that was abandoned earlier because of another sinkhole. the area has had a week of non-stop rain.

now he describes visiting his son in jail, saying, quote, he cannot look at me in the eyes. he is confused, can't remember what happened. he says he wants to apologize to his sisters. he says he will be strong and help us see this through. he said it would be better if he shot me than all those kids. police say the father's guns were used to carry out the massacre. how did he end up with those weapons? >> he doesn't feel that they -- does say they were in a locked gun safe. >> he was making jokes while he was doing it. like rhymes. >> reporter: what did he say? >> every time he would kill someone, he would say "another one bites the dust". >> reporter: john barnes, an officer who helped stop the shooting spent years as an officer in houston and
