thunderstorms south of cuba for the 40% shot that this becomes something tropical. and i'll tell you whether it does or not there is a high pressure system parked in the atlantic that shoves the tropical moisture right into the gulf coast so for this holiday weekend, miami, orlando, all the way up to atlanta, potential for four to even a half foot of rain. >> all right. thank you so much, ginger. i know a lot of people did not want to hear that news for the weekend. new developments now in that high school shooting in texas. more schools across the state facing threats as we hear from the suspect's father. and we're learning new details about how police stopped the the gunman. abc's marcus moore is in sante fe with the latest. good morning to you, marcus. >> reporter: michael, good morning. we do have a clearer picture of how the violence came to an end here at the santa fe high school. the sheriff says by heroic police officers. and this morning, school districts in the area are on

high alert. this morning, in the wake of the deadly shooting at sante fe high that took ten lives, a wave of threats targeting schools across texas. some leading to arrests. school districts across the state announcing increased security for the remainder of the year. >> i'm agitated. when i have to tell her to zig and zag if anything happens at school, it's ridiculous. >> reporter: the galveston county sheriff revealing the crucial moments officers were caught in a firefight with the alleged gunman inside sante fe high school, as students were evacuated. >> the two officers that engaged the individual within four minutes or approximately four minutes are heroes. they contained him in that one area, isolated to them, engaging with them. >> reporter: in an emotional press conference the sheriff revealing his own granddaughter was in the school at the time of the shooting. >> anybody wants to hear the heart stop and see how long they can not breathe, wait until that phone call comes in. until you know they're safe. >> reporter: this morning the alleged gunman dimitrios pagourtzis is under suicide watch at the galveston county jail. according to his distraught father, the high school junior

was bullied, telling greek tv, quote, what happened, i can't even say. nonetheless i am saying what i suspect as a father because i have lost my son. now he describes visiting his son in jail, saying, quote, he could not look at me in the eyes. he is confused. can't remember what happened. he said he wants to apologize to his sisters. he said he'll be strong and help us see this through. this morning, that father's son is facing capital murder charges. also today, texas governor greg abbott is hosting the first of several days of roundtable discussions to talk about school safety here in texas. george? >> let's see what can come of it. thanks very much. to the white house now and that extraordinary meeting between the president and top just cyst officials running the russian investigation. the deputy attorney general and fbi director have now accepted trump's demands and agreed to share more confidential information about it with congress. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega is tracking it all. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: good morning to you.

an investigation into the investigation is exactly what this is. and that seems to have pleased president trump enough to avoid a showdown with his justice department, at least for now. he may be in the president's crosshairs but deputy attorney rod rosenstein was all smiles as he left a meeting in the oval office. the president summoned his top law enforcement officials, including fbi director christopher wray to talk about his latest demand, a tweet sunday ordering a new investigation into whether or not the fbi/doj infiltrated or surveilled the trump campaign for political purposes. and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the obama administration. the edict sending shock waves through washington. >> that he would issue such an absurd and abusive demand based on no evidence shows just how little regard the president has for the rule of law. >> clearly this is designed to

undermine the investigation. it's designed to distract from the president's growing legal troubles. >> reporter: the president's demand comes in response to a "new york times" report claiming that in late 2016, the fbi used an informant to question two trump campaign associates about their contacts with russians. there is no evidence the fbi infiltrated the trump campaign. but in response to the president's tweet, rosenstein ordered the justice department's inspector general to investigate the president's concerns as part of an ongoing probe. after that oval office meeting with his top law enforcement team, the white house says the president is satisfied with the review for now. >> we'll get to the bottom of it because the american people have a right to know. >> reporter: well, that's the administration's response, not everyone is happy with the doj for complying with president trump's demand. and former attorney general eric holder made it known, take a look, he tweeted. doj response is disappointing. there is no basis/no predicate for an inquiry. it's time to stand for time honored doj independence.

that separation from white house is a critical part of our system. george? >> thanks very much. let's talk to chris christie about it. welcome back, governor. you come at this from a couple different angles. you're a friend/adviser to president trump. you're a former prosecutor, seven years in the justice department and know rosenstein and christopher wray. two big questions was the president right to make the demand? and were they right to accept it? >> well, two things, george. was the president right to make the demand? he can make whatever he manned he wants. the important thing is to see thousand the department of justice responds an both responded the right way by not overreacting and saying, okay. >> no criminal investigation. >> let's let the inspector general take a look. the inspector general is already looking at a broad array of concerns regarding what was going on in the comey fbi regarding the hillary clinton e-mail investigation and subsequent actions. so put this on mike horowitz's plate over at the office. he's a longtime justice department employee.

an obama appointee. if he believes something rises to another level, he'll recommend that to the deputy attorney general. if he doesn't he'll write a report and resolve it from there. i think this was a lot of fanfare. and the people who defused it yesterday were rod rosenstein and chris wray. >> questions about the president's actions and saw eric holder's tweet right there and a lot of people say this is a valuable and established constraint. presidents don't get involved in individual enforcement actions, investigative actions. >> what they don't get involved in is being able to demand criminal investigations. >> that's what he did, though, isn't it? >> he didn't say criminal investigation. i think that's important. and the president is allowed to discuss policy and the way you pursue policy at the doj. i think the important thing is, george, everyone has been concerned about the department of justice and how they'll operate. is it going to be independent? is it going to make the right decisions? i think yesterday they did. they sat. they heard the president out. he absolutely has a right to be

heard out. and then they made the decision, send it to the inspector general. i don't know if that's what the president wants but that's what he got. >> in the meantime, the president's attorney rudy giuliani has been suggesting that whether or not the president will cooperate will depend in part on what the inspector general finds. is that appropriate? >> well, listen. if you're the defense lawyer, anything you can do to keep the president out of the room with rob bueller is what you should do. you and i have been talking about this for months now. my position hasn't changed in the least. whatever position rudy wants to take to effectuate that result is the right result for his client. that's his only priority at this point. he's a lawyer retained by a client. he's got to keep his client out of that room. because there's no upside for the president being in that room. >> do you believe that robert mueller is on a strict timeline here? he has to get something done by september 1st or put everything off until after the election? >> he has a window to do certain things by september 1. then september 1 to election day has to be a bark period. the only person who didn't

respect that was jim comey and after the election if he's not finished he could pick up from there. september 1 is an interim deadline unless he feels he can get everything done by then. my sense is he won't but he will not get everything done by that time. but he will go dark during that period because bob mueller follows the jus th jus the rules and has been good on this. and he should be seen as an independent force here, i think he has been and let's let him do his job. >> chris christie, thanks very much. robin. >> now to an urgent manhunt after a police officer was killed in the line of duty responding to a call in maryland. police are now searching for multiple suspects. david kerley is in baltimore county with the latest. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the search is still on for three suspects in the area. residents are waking up learning that a 16-year-old was detained while this area was on lockdown yesterday. overnight the inuing in this su neighborhood north of baltimore, for the three suspects still at large. residents learning a 16-year-old was detained shortly after the incident with the police officer. >> respond for a signal 13 for

an officer. >> reporter: just before 2:00 in the afternoon the nearly four-year veteran officer, the first female killed in the line of duty here was responding to a suspicious vehicle, a possible burglary, when witnesses say they heard gunshots. >> our officer responded to this call and she encountered at least one suspect and was critically injured. >> reporter: police are not saying whether the officer was shot or struck by a vehicle. only that her significant injuries led to her death. a nearby resident saying her son, a volunteer firefighter performed cpr on the officer and called 911. >> he sat with her and stayed with her until the police and the paramedics came on scene. >> trying to set up a perimeter. in the area. >> reporter: residents told to stay in their homes. elementary schools also told not to release students with at least one possible murderer on the run. >> we're telling everybody, be on your toes. this is a bad time in the united states for law enforcement. >> reporter: the chief also revealed that the officer was

wearing a body cam and it was activated. that video could be very key in finding the other suspects and solving this killing. george? >> okay, david. thank you very much. we have new warnings this morning about the volcano emergency in hawaii. offs now concerned about the toxic cloud containing tiny shards of glass. it's called laze, a mix of lava and haze and matt gutman is on the scene this hawaii. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. and the source of that laze is right behind me, that's that roiling cauldron. it is kicking out several swimming pools worth of lava every single second. that is creating multiple rivers of lava. that's going out into the ocean kicking up that steam and fine glass particles. another concern for folks living here, this lava field has now pierced a local geothermal plant. this morning that lava flow intensifying. the scope so wide that the only way to see it is from the air.

fissure 22 glowing red, dominating the landscape. you can see fissure 22 there. the enormous volume of lava it is putting out and you can actually feel the heat radiating 2,000 feet up. that lava lake now lapping up against the area's geothermal plant. 50,000 gallons of flammable liquid have been removed. but officials say 1 of its 3 wells has not yet been capped. that lava at 2,000 degrees is hot enough to melt gold and, of course, rock. and as we saw overnight making the ground below unstable. everywhere we go we hear pops. that's when the ground opens up, that's methane coming out, with minor explosions, making things more complicated for first responders. in the helicopter we followed those meandering lava rivers to the ocean and that explosion of steam. >> that's that plume of laze that they've been warning everyone about which is hydrochloric acid and a lot of glass crystals. >> reporter: ethan has been

flying over this area for 15 years. >> i have been in hawaii pretty much my whole life, born and raised. and i've never seen an event this big. the look of the landscape is changing permanently and forever. >> reporter: even from a safe distance you can feel the heat of that eruption behind me radiating. and from our second camera, i want to give you a sense, george, of the scale of this lava flow. you see that cauldron then the other one and this goes on down the line. fissure and fissure and i want to give you a sense of why these natural disaster, volcanoes are so different. this is only about 100 degrees. this lava cannot be cleaned up so anybody who lost their home in a volcano essentially can't rebuild. they basically have to just move on, robin. >> oh, my gosh. those scenes continue to be unbelievable. please take care, matt. thank you. now to new trouble for usa swimming. a former olympian is suing, claiming the sport's governing

body knew that a former coach abused her as a minor and even enabled him, covering it up. eva pilgrim has the story. >> not all athletes will become olympians but all athletes deserve to feel safe on a pool deck. >> reporter: this morning, former world champ in 2012 olympic team usa member ariana kukors says usa swimming failed to protect her. >> kukors coming down really strong here. >> reporter: in a new lawsuit filed monday kukors who says she was sexually abused for about a decade by form you are u.s. national team coach sean hutchinson says hutchison began grooming her for a sexual relationship when she was just 13. and sexually assaulted her at 16. she claims that usa swimming and longtime olympic coach mark schubert knew about the abuse. >> during that decade, he stole many things from me. including my swimming career. my college experience. friendships. my virginity, and ultimately, my olympic dream. >> reporter: usa swimming releasing a statement saying we respect ariana kukors' bravery in stepping forward and sharing her story. we have been in regular contact with her legal team over the last several months and will

continue to work with them and ariana through this process. kukors's allegation part of a larger scandal rocking usa swimming. according to an extension report from the southern california news group, the organization failed to properly address claims of sexual abuse made by hundreds of alleged victims over the course of two decades. and overnight abc news reached out to hutchison and schubert. neither commented on the new lawsuit. in february, after the allegations broke hutchison told abc news he denied having a sexual or romantic relationship before she was old enough to make those decisions herself, denying that he did anything to groom her. robin? >> all right. eva, thank you very much. michael. we'll switch gears to something you do not see every day. monkey business at the airport in san antonio. a monkey named dawkins was on his way to a primate sanctuary in texas when he escaped from his cage and decided he was going to go on the run. airport workers were finally able to corner him in the baggage handling area.

>> well, it was a decision of the couple. but they were in consultation both with the archbishop of canterbury and with the dean of st. george's and i'm sure others as well. but once they had made their decision i got a phone call actually through one of the members of my staff from the archbishop's residence and got a phone call. and i didn't believe it. because a member of my staff called and said, they'd like you to preach at the royal wedding. i said get out of here. april fools'. you got to be kidding. they said, no, it's true. i said, is this for real? and they said, yes. so had to call the archbishop of canterbury back and it happened from there. >> you had to keep it a secret. you couldn't tell your wife. >> i couldn't tell my wife for about a month. >> what was her reaction when you told her? >> the same reaction. she said, get out of here. >> did not believe you. such a powerful message you had about love. you also talked about slavery, you talked about dr. martin luther king. why was that so important to you, sir? >> well, it was important because the love that the couple has that was obvious. you could look at their faces

and see they are in love. that love was a reflection of a greater love, and that greater love is the love of god. i think that's what jesus has been talking about, that's what he was trying to teach us, love god, love your neighbor and you'll be able to figure out the rest. and i just realized that that's the message for this wedding, not just for the couple and their families, but for anybody who was in the church. and when i say in the church i mean on television, on their computer screens, that this message that god really wants us to love each other and love god and we can actually change things. >> yeah, love is the way. you kept saying that love is the way. it's so powerful. >> it really is. it really is. the truth is the people who have made a difference in the world, think about people who made a difference in your life. it's been because they loved you. >> amen. >> and people who have made a difference in this world for the good have consistently been people who have lived off the passion of love, greater than self. and have cared about other people and have cared about changing society and have cared about changing lives.

members, the bride and groom? mother of the bride, anybody after? >> very briefly in the reception and there were a lot of people in the reception, so it was more just an opportunity to say hello and they were kind and gracious and just said things like thank you, it meant a lot. that kind of stuff. >> it cannot be lost on you, an african-american clergyman there in that church, the mother of the bride is african-american. her daughter is about to marry a prince, whose grandmother is the queen of england, who was there, as well. did the gravitas of the moment, did that sink into you as well, the history? >> i was very aware of it. you know, the reality is here's the thing about it. the love between those two people, between that royal couple was so powerful, not only did we all show up, but it brought all these different worlds together. it brought different nationalities, different ethnicities, different religious traditions, people of all stripes and types, people of different political persuasions.

transformation for you since the you started the show and lost almost 60 pounds. >> yes, sir. >> from the audition to the end of the show. [ applause ] so what motivated you to lose the weight? >> you know, i was just kind of being a young man and getting to a time of my life where i had to figure out a lot of things like what i was going to do with my life after high school and had a lot of things i was unhappy about and so i dealt with all those things and the weight was just kind of an accident. it just happened to be part of it. >> well, you shed that. you look great by the way. >> thank you very much. >> i was just going to ask you, i was going to ask, i know a lot of people want to know how you did it. i'm guessing stress had a little role there. >> for "idol," absolutely. but i lost -- before i went to "idol," i lost 40 pounds. >> you were on the journey. >> i was on the journey when i got there. but, you know, it was just simple stuff like cutting fried foods and whatnot.

drinking a lot of water and working out three hours a day. >> hard work. changing what you eat. >> a lot like the water part. you said three hours a day and they're like, oh, no. but you do what works for you. >> yes, sir. >> gabby, you're very close to your dad and before every performance you had a secret handshake but when you were on "idol," your dad is not there and had to do it with yourself backstage. >> i did. when i started "american idol" i was 17. so i was a minor so i could have my dad around with me and then i turned 18 in march so i had to do the handshake all by myself. it was okay. i still made it work. do you want to see what it is. >> yes. >> this is so funny i'm doing it by myself. oh, okay. it goes one, two, three, four, one, two, three. we would do that before every single show.
