investigation and a warning that the video you're about to see may be disturbing. >> reporter: dramatic body worn video gives us a perspective of a patrol stop that was anything but ordinary. the video taken from a body camera on santa cruz county sheriff's deputy early friday morning shows a female suspect striking his partner with one of their patrol cars. that deputy who is not being identified can be heard screaming in pain after the initial attack. this is the view from the camera the second deputy was wearing. the suspect hitting the gas multiple times forcing them to open fire several times hitting the woman with three bullets. she has been identified at 27-year-old jessica lowe a resident of santa cruz county who le mains in the hospital. the deputies were patrolling ocean street extension where they encountered lowe and an unidentified man moving items between two separate vehicles. the deputies ran the plates and

discovered one of the vehicles were stolen. the suspects were detained in separate patrol cars and that's when things turned violent. lowe was somehow able to slip out of her handcuffs, reached through a partially opened window, opened the door and then got into the driver seat of the patrol car without warning she drove the vehicle z-rektly at one of the deputies. >> just a reminder of what a difficult job it is that all police and deputy sheriffs have in this state and country. >> reporter: lowe has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer and six other charges. deputy waltrip returns to work next week. the injured deputy remains out on medical leave. in santa cruz county, chris wynn, abc 7 news. we have a developing story right now in oakland to share with you. let's show you pictures from sky 7 live. police are on the scene at the on ramp to highway 24 from martin luther king where a police pursuit ended literally moments ago. police stopped a black honda accord. initial reports are that there were five to six people inside that car.

now this of course happening during the height of rush hour and it has caused some significant traffic delays in the area. we'll continue to monitor the situation and bring you any updates on abc 7 news at 5:00 and. we have new information on the circumstances that led up to an officer involved shooting in hayward. investigators say the officer answered a call about a dispute between roommates around 7:00 last night. they say the officer fired her taser at one of the roommates when he refused to comply with her orders. the suspect then allegedly hit the officer in the arm with a large metal bar and that's when the officer opened fire hitting the suspect and startling neighbors. >> i heard gunshots and they sounds pretty close so i told my dad to lock our front door because we didn't know if there was somebody running or what was going on. >> both the suspect and the officer were taken to the hospital. the officer was treated and released. the suspect underwent surgery and is in critical condition.

students at an east bay high school have started a petition and plan to protest after the district transferred one of their teachers to another school. laura anthony shows you the video that many believe prompted that decision. >> reporter: he's a teacher at heritage high captured on video kneeling as several of the schools raise the campus plague before the start of morning campus now that teacher tyler rust is being transferred from heritage to another school in brentwood and some students have started an online petition in protest. >> mr. rust been willing to act on his beliefs encourages us to acts on our own. >> reporter: so far it's generated more than 9,000 signatures from all over the country. >> i think that it's terrible they're trying to transfer him. he didn't do anything wrong necessarily. >> i want him at heritage, because he fosters this environment of inclusion that i think is so, so important on our campus. >> reporter: rust told us i chose to acknowledge the flag

in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. new details tonight about the death of a hiker who fell to his death while climbing the steep cliff face of yosemite's half dome. he was hiking during a thunderstorm when he slipped. rankers recovered his body today. here's time lapsed video yesterday afternoon. we just spoke with one person at the time who said it was raining like crazy. he says it's scary on a sunny day and can't imagine climbing half dome when its wet. so you really get a sense of the treacherous continues. his death is the first at half dome since 2010. a huge mudslide closed a major highway in the sierra nevada. crews worked throughout the day to clear 100 foot long stretch of mud and debris that's five feet deep in some spots. the slide happened when up to an inch of rain fell last night and that stretch of highway is in

he's a veteran cop who is breaking new ground in this job. vic lee with the interview you'll see only on abc 7 news. >> reporter: sergeant tony montoya has been a cop in san francisco for 24 years. he last worked out of mission station. he was on the executive board of the police officer's associations for a decade and a half. now, he's president of the p.o.a. montoya is latino and he's openly gay. >> i am the first gay person to be appointed the head of the association. >> reporter: montoya is proud to be gay, proud to be a cop. >> we have a large lgbt presenc on the police officer and it's also reflective of what the city represents, so for me it's never been an issue. >> reporter: montoya takes over the leadership of the police union from marty haleran who will return to full time police work.

take a look at how many days of dry conditions we've had in terms of no measurable rain. we've had drizzle but no measurable may for the month of may for the last 22 days. we're going to change it up. we are bringing in chances of some showers, so definitely some drizzle the next few mornings but as we go into friday there's a good chance that we'll be seeing a level one system, light showers here in the bay area. it is overcast there, low ceilings creating over hour delays on arriving flights. if you're expecting someone there, just keep that in mind. in santa cruz there's mix of clouds and sun right now. 56 degrees in san francisco, 58 in oakland. in the 60s in mount taken view, san jose. overcast conditions from our camera and definitely areas of low visibility so watch out tonight during the commuter if you're stepping out to run some
