jessica lowe managed to slip out of her cuffs and drop into the driver's seat of the patrol car. the deputy that was run over is on medical leave. after several deadly crashes, officials are recommending that all school buses be equipped with seat belts that go across the lap and across the shoulder. >> only a handful of states currently require some kind of seat belts on large school buses. and get this, the driver in the new jersey school bus accident that killed a student and teacher had his license suspended 14 times in the past 43 years. most of those were for unpaid parking tickets, mind you. and sources say he may have been trying to make an illegal u-turn on a busy highway when that crash took place. and a judge has ruled in a case of two parents who want their 30-year-old son out of the house.

>> he's been living at their home rent free despite repeated requests and demands to find his own place. gio benitez caught up with him after his day in court. >> reporter: a bizarre case of parents versus son. the parents telling a judge through an attorney that their 30-year-old son must move out of their home. >> they have no obligation to provide support. he's well over the age of 21. >> reporter: in a lawsuit, they say they have sent him five letters in the past two months like this one. you must leave this house immediately. telling him, you have to work. even giving him more than $1,000 to find a new place. >> there is no reason for these people to have him in their home. >> reporter: michael says he's planning to leave in a few months. >> i'm not a burden to them in the home. they don't provide laundry or food. it's really a moot point for them to seek me to be ejected.

>> killing us. can't afford it. it's outrageous. >> reporter: just a year ago, people paid $3 a gallon for gas. now it's $3.75 with a possibility of getting higher. some argue it's in part because of president trump's decision to impose sanctions on iran. jeff spring from aaa says it's one possible reason. >> we don't know how exactly it's going to play out. >> reporter: but he says the price fluctuation likely has more to do with the demand of oil and gas. there was a surplus of oil. but recently, suppliers have backed off. >> we've seen the glut reduce, reduce and reduce. we're at a point where the price of oil is going up because they

think there's enough demand. >> reporter: to make matters worse, california is feeling the worst of the price hikes. most of the south have gas prices below $3, despite a nationwide increase. let's turn now to the growing uncertainty around the summit between president trump and kim jong un. >> there's a substantial chance the meeting set for june 12th in singapore won't happen as planned. he is offering kim jong un personal security. and even prosperity for his country if he gives up his nuclear weapons. but the president now appears open to dismantling the program in phases rather than a single step. >> all in one would be nice. i can tell you. i am not going to go beyond that. it would certainly be better if it were all in one. does it have to be? i don't think i want to commit myself. but all in one would be a lot better.

>> the president said there won't be a meeting if certain conditions are not met, but he declined to say exactly what those conditions are. >> and south korea is more optimistic saying there's a 99.9% chance it will happen. >> and north korea is moving ahead with plans to dismantle its nuclear test site any day now. brad mielke heard there one of the reporters who flew into see it happen. >> coming at you here from the "start here" studio. as the president casts doubt on whether the big summit will happen, the question is will north korea still keep its promise and tear down its own nuclear test site. we know someone who will see that happen with his own eyes. tom cheshire is in north korea right now. he's part of a small team of journalists heading to that test site. how is this teardown actually supposed to work? >> there are lots of tunnels underneath. those tunnels will be exploded and collapsed so they can't be used.

and the entrances up top will be sealed to keep the radiation. >> and the journey there, he says is a 12-hour train ride followed by a two-hour hike through the woods to get to the site. a satellite phone has been confiscated along with his personal radiation detector. you can hear that entire conversation on "start here" later this morning. check it out on apple podcast or your favorite app. president trump is causing concern among republican lawmakers with talks of easing sanctions on zte. business has been crippled because of those sanctions, but the president is hinting he may grant relief as long as china agrees to buy some goods. that has senators like marco rubio concerned. >> why do you think this administration is giving up so much leverage? >> i think there are some in the administration looking for a short-term deal that maybe reduces the trade deficit by a little bit but makes no structural changes and avoids a trade war. i'm saying zte should be dealt

with for what it is, a national security threat. >> a bill that would prevent the president from lifting any sanctions on chinese telecom without congressional approval is said to be growing. the most senior catholic official ever to be convicted of sexual abuse is stepping down. phillip wilson was convicted of concealing the abuse of two altar boys by a priest in the 1970s. he faces up to two years in prison. he has not said whether he will appeal the verdict. a study says yes, you can make up on weekends for a lack of sleep during the week. swedish researchers found that the best case scenario was to get regular sleep, six to seven hours weekends and weekdays. if you sleep less than that, those who made up for the short sleep on weekends had no increased risk of death.

>> you know who you are. >> mm-hm. shifting gears here, current and former students at the university of southern california are suing the school, accusing a former campus doctor of sexual misconduct. >> hundreds of faculty members are calling for the president to resign. >> reporter: at least six former and current university of southern california students are accusing dr. george tyndall of gross sexual misconduct and sexual assault. tuesday, two of them speaking out. >> dr. tyndall told me to undress from the bottom down. and he stood there watching while i did so. and he smiled. >> it is horrifying to know that during such a vulnerable moment in my life, i was in the hands of a predator. >> reporter: the students filing a joint lawsuit against tyndall, a former usc gynecologist, accusing him of molesting patients over several decades. and usc of failing to properly respond to their complaints.

>> we're also calling on usc to conduct an independent investigation of the very serious allegations made by these students. >> reporter: tyndall, who worked at a usc clinic for 30 years denied wrongdoing. usc says they launched an investigation in 2006 after receiving a complaint. tyndall and usc reached a settlement agreement and he left the school last year. >> sometimes the word of a woman and particularly, a young woman, is not afforded the value that it should be afforded. >> reporter: the los angeles times reporting the university received about 200 complaints from former patients and they are forwarding some of those reports to the los angeles police department. at least 200 usc professors have signed a letter demanding the president of the university resign based on how the school responded to the complaints. diane and kendis? >> that really would be a big deal there.

>> reporter: a military office assigned to the white house has already created a commemorative coin for the summit, referring to kim as, quote, supreme leader. while the president said he would like to get what he called an all-in-one deal with north korea, he left the door open to accepting something less. and make no mistake, rewarding north korea before it gives up its entire nuclear program would be a major concession. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. and despite the uncertainty surrounding the summit, north korea is moving forward with dismantling its test site. international journalists have arrived to witness the planned explosions to destroy the site. a long-time business partner of president trump's personal lawyer michael cohen has pleaded guilty in a new york tax fraud case. evgeny freedman has managed taxies for cohen for years. he is known as the taxi king of new york. his plea deal requires him to
