on camera. how this all played out. and a biker comes face-to-face with a moose with surprising results. we do say good morning on this wednesday. we're going to start with a possible new crisis in hawaii. a power plant now in the path of the toxic lava from kilauea volcano. >> workers at that plant have been scrambling to prevent gases from being released. meanwhile, we're getting a new look at the damage in the area as we hear from a man who nearly lost his leg when he was hit by flying lava. this morning, a new crisis from kilauea. a wave of lava is now closing in on this power plant that supplies about a quarter of the big island's electricity. authorities say they've removed gas and racing to cap the final open well. it's just the latest in a series of emergencies triggered by the erupting volcano. >> oh, it was incredible. i mean, it was just an event of

a lifetime. >> reporter: darryl clinton survived what's being called a lava bomb. >> it was the most forceful impact i've ever had in my body in my life. >> reporter: clinton was on the roof of his home putting out fires caused by flying rocks when an explosion hundreds of yards away launched a large chunk of molten rock. the lava bomb hit clinton in the leg. >> it was super painful, and i don't know if i was in shock. i just think about my daughters and i knew i was up on that roof and i was in really bad shape. >> reporter: clinton's friend was able to apply first aid and get him to the hospital. >> the doctors did an amazing job. i can't believe they could put it back together. i thought it was -- i just wanted to live. i didn't care if they cut my leg off down there or not. and i just can't believe that's there. >> reporter: elsewhere, people are returning to scenes like this. burned out homes and property

that's been changed forever. dee nevarez took this home video while evacuating, and she returned to this. more than three weeks into the emergency on the island, evacuated residents are growing weary wondering if they can ever return to their normal lives. >> tomorrow we could be back or we could be -- the house is gone. it's that kind of stress. >> we just heard from emergency management officials. they say there's no longer a threat of a blackout if lava does reach that power plant because they're bringing older plants back online in order to produce electricity, but about 50 homes and buildings in that area have been destroyed. back to the mainland and to washington, d.c. where president trump is turning up the pressure on law enforcement officials over unproven allegations that the fbi spied on his campaign. he continued to voice complaints on twitter overnight after refusing to express support for a top official at the justice department. abc's kenneth moton has the latest from d.c. good morning to you, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, kendis. yes, president trump is turning

up the heat after his allegations saying if the fbi had spies in his campaign, that would be unprecedented in the history of our country. overnight president trump continued to fuel his unsubstantiated claim that the fbi may have used an informant to infiltrate his 2016 campaign. trump tweeting, follow the money. the spy was there early in the campaign and yet never reported collusion with russia because there was no collusion. he was only there to spy for political reasons and to help crooked hillary win. >> a lot of people are saying they had spies in my campaign. if they had spies in my campaign, that would be a disgrace to this country, and it would be very illegal aside from everything else. >> reporter: there's no evidence that happened. "the new york times" reports the fbi used the informant, a professor from the u.s., to question two trump campaign advisers about their contacts with russians. one of those men, carter page. he wouldn't say on cnn if he believes the informant was a spy trying to infiltrate the campaign. >> we'll see. i mean, there's increasingly,

you know, there's this drip, drip, drip where there's a lot of information that keeps coming out. >> reporter: the justice department's inspector general is now investigating the president's concerns. that order coming from deputy attorney general rod rosenstein after trump demanded the doj look into the matter. >> do you have confidence in rod rosenstein? >> what is your next question, please? >> reporter: the president refused to give rosenstein a vote of support. the doj's inspector general is already investigating but a group of house republicans is calling for the appointment of a second special counsel to look into alleged misconduct in the doj and the fbi. no sign the resolution will go anywhere in congress. diane and kendis. >> all right. our thanks to kenneth moton in washington. thank you. a longtime business partner of president trump's personal lawyer michael cohen has pleaded guilty. that was in a tax fraud case. evgeny freidman has been managing taxis for cohen and is known here in new york as the king of -- the taxi king.

his plea deal requires him to cooperate with prosecutors from any ongoing investigation. that includes the investigation into cohen's businesses and the special counsel's russia investigation. information from freidman could be used to force cohen into a plea deal of his own. the midterm elections are taking shape after some historic new rounds of primaries. stacey abrams is one step closer to becoming the first black female governor in the country. she won the democratic primary in georgia last night, and in texas former sheriff lupe valdez also made history winning the democratic primary runoff for governor. she's the first openly gay and latina nominee for governor in texas history. meanwhile, back on capitol hill, senate republicans are expected to scale back or even skip their august vacation this year because of pressure to get more things done. some incredible images from a plane crash that five americans and a pilot were able to survive. the plane from austin, texas, broke apart as it ran off a runway in honduras. first responders tried to lift the door to evacuate the

passengers while fire crews sprayed foam. experts say that airport is notoriously dangerous. >> you could be too fast as you're coming down that hill, and if you land too fast and you don't have the airplane under control, it's not hard, as we've seen in numerous instances at this airport, to go off the end of the runway. >> the passengers worked at a texas company called ezcorp. the ceo remains in the hospital along with the pilot, but the others have now been released. time now for a look at your weather on this wednesday morning. a storm system moving across the west turned roads into rivers in ft. collins, colorado. that is hail covering entire swaths of the city. looking at the radar this morning, powerful storms are moving across the ohio valley and up into the northeast. meanwhile, down in the caribbean there's a 40% chance of those storms turning into a tropical system in the next five days. by friday they'll bring heavy rain to florida and southwestern

time. now, back here at home authorities in central florida are keeping a close eye on several sinkholes that have opened up in a retirement community. after days of nonstop rain, four new sinkholes have opened up in the villages. one of them trapped a woman inside her home in the middle of the night. we spoke to one of her neighbors. >> the lady that lives where most of the damage is now is a widow, and she thought somebody was breaking in her house. she tried to get out the front door where there was a great big sinkhole, and she couldn't get out. she called the police, and they came and were able to shimmy open some of the sliders in the back to get her out. >> and one of the new holes opened up in front of a home that was abandoned months ago because of another sinkhole. the national transportation safety board is recommending all new school buses be equipped with seat belts including shoulder harnesses. it comes after the board investigated two recent crashes in tennessee and maryland. currently only four states require lap belts on buses.

elsewhere it's up to individual school districts whether to spend the extra money. the ntsb is also calling for more oversight of drivers. in the meantime, we're learning more about the school bus crash in new jersey last week that left a student and a teacher dead. the driver has a history of violations and had his license suspended 14 times, but 13 of those were for parking violations. congress has approved a bill that will roll back the rules imposed on banks after the 2008 financial crisis. the bill considered a win for president trump will gut much of the dodd/frank law dramatically raising the threshold at which banks are deemed too big to fail. supporters say the move will boost lending. but one democrat calls it a big bank bonanza. the banking industry just reported record profits during the first quarter. and new questions are being raised about amazon's 30-day return policy. "the wall street journal" reports amazon has been closing the accounts of customers who send back too many items. those customers are then banned

two parents trying to force their 30-year-old son to move out of the house. >> now a judge has issued a ruling, but the son is vowing to appeal. abc's gio benitez has the details. >> reporter: a bizarre case of parents versus son. mark and christina rotondo telling a judge through an attorney that their 30-year-old son must move out of their home. >> they have no obligation to provide support. he's well over the age of 21. >> reporter: in a lawsuit they say they have sent him five letters in the past two months like this one, you must leave this house immediately telling him, you have to work. even giving him more than a thousand dollars to find a new place. >> there is no reason for these people to have him in their home. >> reporter: michael says he's planning to leave in a few months. >> i'm not a burden to them in the home. they don't provide laundry or food. it's really a moot point for them to seek me to be ejected.

♪ it is time for your "pulse" on this wednesday. and, you know, we told you a little bit earlier about sinkholes in florida. well, this particular sinkhole is far less serious and opened up on the north lawn of the white house. >> the internet is having a field day coming up with various explanations for the hole. some including references to draining the swamp or the deep state. >> deep state, good one. >> but the hole is now covered by a board and surrounded by cones and police tape. sinkholes are said to be common in the d.c. area. the swamping, by the way, wasn't too far off. it's apparently common after extended periods of rain which they've had. >> and d.c. was a swamp at one point. and next a special homecoming for a 7-year-old dog. >> jake wandered all the way from his home in arizona over there to pittsburgh 2,000 miles away. a good samaritan found jake near the ymca outside of pittsburgh.

courthouse later today with a big win off the field. today a judge will decide if he'll go to trial related to a domestic violence incident in february. foster's former girlfriend, elissa en flis testified she falsely accused the 49ers' linebacker of domestic violence because she wanted to get back at him for breaking up with her. >> it came off raw. it came off organic and broke down on the stand and apologized. >> reporter: ennis also testified she tried to bring false domestic violence charges back in 2011 when that man tried to break up with him. 49ers are waiting for the case to be resolved before making any decisions on foster's future. the judge is expected to issue the ruling at 3:30 this afternoon. matt keller, nbc 7 news. san francisco police are investigating after a thief

stole thousands of dollars in sunglasses. surveillance video shows a man trying to break into eyes in disguise at 2:30 a.m. sunday. the suspect tried smashing the tempered glass, tried to put his arm through the glass and unlock the door but couldn't get in. that is, until someone who appears to be the same man where he smashed the glass and swiped what appeared to be fendi sunglasses. >> i was upset and couldn't sleep all night after the call. >> it seems to be happening not only here, other colleagues that have am tom tri stores, this is a new crime that's gaining popularity. >> thieves turn around and sell the sunglasses on ebay. san francisco police say both incidents are open investigations and the suspect who is unknown may be the same person. it is 4:30 now. if you're just joining
