sunny by the afternoon. numbers will top out in the 70s. low 70s in the warmest inland valleys. tonight that sun is setting at 8:21. just patchy fog. we are looking for a big warmup as we get towards sunday. wait until you hear about memorial day. details in just a few minutes. matt. >> thanksa. developing news out of the east bay. oakland firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire near the coliseum. firefighters say flames broke out at 10:40 in a of radioing materials yard near the bart station after the a's fireworks show. paul simon's concert at oracle ended around the same time. you can see heavy smoke in the area. bart service was not impacted. no injuries were reported and no word on what might have caused the fire. police are investigating a shooting in the fillmore neighborhood on fillmore street near golden gate area. hard to say how many victims there are, but you can see

several officers in the area collecting evidence. we have a call in to the police department for more details on what led up to the shooting. two men took a joyride on scooters on the bay bridge. cornell barnard chp is not mused. >> reporter: the bay bridge is meant for cars and trucks but certainly not these guys. >> look at this [ bleep ] -- >> reporter: this driver used his cell phone to capture two young men riding their motorized scooters on the eastbound lane snarling thursday afternoon's commute. >> i thought it was [ bleep ] crazy. >> reporter: that driver wants to remain anonymous. he first encounted them on first street. he expected them to make a right on harrison but they kept going onto the bay bridge. the scooters can only go 15 miles an hour but this pair seemed to be having a blast. >> seems like they didn't care. they didn't have a care in the world. they were having a good time. >> reporter: the chp got several

calls about the bridge scooters, but officers never found them. we showed the video to this officer. he says it is a first. >> completely illegal. not a motor vehicle, not a motorcycle of any kind can be up on the freeway. >> reporter: these signs warn pedestrians and motor driven cycles to stay away. >> reporter: the two are riding bright green scooters owned by lime. they sent us a statement. this week, san francisco issued an ultimatum to scooter companies to remove them from city streets by june 4th while officials work on a permitting process. meantime, drivers, keep an eye out for these two. they might be back. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc7 news. concord police are investigating after the driver of a van was stabbed outside a cvs store on tree boulevard on clayton road. he was waved down by a man in the parking lot. police say when the van stopped

to see what the # wanted the drive was attacked. the passenger said nothing triggered the attack. >> by boss pulled up and asked him what his deal was and the guy pulled out a knife, stabbed my boss in the neck and took off running. >> the driver was stabbed in the throat and the neck and is in critical condition. police searched for the stabber but have now called it off. protesters took to the street in san francisco last night after officers were not charged in two deadly shootings. >> how do you spell murder? >> s-f-p-d. >> abc news was on valencia street where nearly early earlya demonstrators blocked traffic. one officer shot and killed a man on meth in 2016. another killed another man who was acting aggressively in 2016. on thursday the d.a. announced

the # officers will not face criminal charges because no crime was committed. a 24th annual memorial service honoring jenny lynn, a 14-year-old who was brutally murdered in her home in 1994 was held last night. in castro valley. her killings that never been solved but each year her parents hold a service and a candlelight vigil as a way to raise awareness of child safety issues. >> the family and friend of pearl pinson held a ving ill at the voyage overpass where she was abducted. her abductor died in a shootouts a he fled across the state. pinson has not been found. a group of south bay runners who were burned out of their homes 38 days ago is demanding their landlord let them back into their units. abc news was at the summer wind apartments last night. last month this fire damaged 36 rent controlled apartments. since then renters claim they haven't been allowed to return to their homes. >> they gave us a few days to get in and get the essentials. after that we have been shut down 30 days trying to get back into the units and they would

not let us. >> a spokesman didn't say why they were not allowed back in. rentered taped a blown up letter listing their demands on the windows of their leasing office. cal fire says trees coming into quack with pg&e power lines caused four major fires last october. these are some of the first official determination from the deadly wildfires last season. katie use as explains how this may change the conversation around fire liability. >> there is a distance required from their poles, from their wires. if they keep to that distance then there shouldn't be a problem. >> reporter: the state senator jerry hill says investigations show pg&e is in the wrong. cal fire said trees coming into contact with power lines is the cause of four major fires. >> the investigators found evidence and determined that pg&e failed to remove a tree in the proximity of a power line. >> reporter: these fires took place in early october of last

year. in three of the cases cal fire says pg&e violated state code. an agency has sent its findings to local prosecutors. pg&e wouldn't go on camera with us. instead it released the following statement. based on the information we have so far, we believe our overall programs met our state's high standards. the utility points to climate change and increased fire dangers as a challenge for the industry. it says the state's policies on wildfire liability are unsustainable. >> they are trying to create that fear so that we would change the law and take them off the hook. that's what they are trying to do. >> reporter: he says as the law stands now pgm shareholders are liable for damages if the utility is found negligent when a fire occurs. cal fire has not yet officially determined the cause of the deadly north bay fires. katie utehs abc7 news. a united airlines flight from sacramento was quarantined by haz-mat crews when it landed

in houston yesterday. a bottle belonging to a passenger on flight 2087 exploded mid air spilling a liquid in the cabin. the flight crew feared it was dangerous and called for firefighters to check it out. haz-mat teams determined there was no hazard. one passenger was questioned by police and released. another airling us flight bown for dublin was canceled due to cargo seals. this is not related to wednesday's incident when the tip of a wing clipped a building at sfo. a airling us flight did take off thursday night but it didn't help passengers with connections. >> i asked if i could get to barcelona. and they said that the flight to dublin was booked that day -- day, completely full, that i would have to wait until the 8:30 to which i told them that i wouldn't be able to make my connect on the 8:30. and they basically said they couldn't help me with that. >> that man is supposed to start a study abroad program in spain on monday. some fellow passengers have been stranded since wednesday.

president of usc announced he will step down after he was accused of mishandling a sex scandal involving a school gynecologist. cl max nikea sent a letter of resignation to the board of trustees. the 2016 internal investigation found dr. george tindall conducted inappropriate exams but the university did not report the findings to the state medical board. former movie mogul harvey weinstein has posted $1 million bail after surrendering to police an allegations of rape and criminal sex acts. he spent less than a half hour in court yesterday. the charges stem from encounters with two women. weinstein denies the allegations. he has given up his passport and is expected back in court in late july. today is the second day of the first big bay area music festival of the weekend. bottle rock is having its

suggested it could happen after all. >> we'll see what happens. it could even be the 12th. we are talking to them now. they very much want to do it. we would like to do it. we are going to see what happens. >> reporter: the president's remarks were prompted by an about-face from the north koreans. they went from threatening a quote nuclear-to-nuclear showdown on wednesday to saying a day later they are willing to meet with the u.s. at, quote, any time w a generous and open heart. >> are you concerned that the north koreans could be trying to play games here, not showing up at the various meetings. >> john, everybody plays games. you know that. you know that better than anybody. >> reporter: it was north korea's hostile statements that prompted the president's letter to kim jong-un pulling out of the summit, citing the # north's tremendous anger and open hostility. for now at least that aggression seems to have evaporated prompting even the defense secretary to say diplomacy may yet save the summit. >> had some possibly some good news on the korea summit where

it may -- if our diplomats can pull it off may have it back on even. >> reporter: one other possibly positive development, in a series of explosions north korea claimed to destroy its nucar audience of foreign journalists. the president gave a commencement address at the he made no mention of north korea, but he did tell the graduates this -- there is no other alternative -- victory, winning, beautiful words. but that's what it's all about. >> reporter: jonathan carl. abc news, the white house. an ash cloud rose 10,000 feet in the air following the latest eruption from kilauea on hawaii's big island. the volcano continues to force evacuations. so far, spewing lava has forced about 2,000 people to evacuate. lava has destroyed 50 buildings since fissures began opening earlier this month.

bart has a new extension between antioch and pittsburgh center. the ten mile stretch has two n stations, antioch and pittsburgh stations. passengers will ride bart's first ever diesel powered trains. why isn't everyone thrilled with the new service? abc news explains. >> reporter: a chorus was brought in to mark the momentous occasion. >> three, two, one -- >> a ribbon cutting ceremony made it official. antioch residents now have a state-of-the-art commute option >> i think we are just happy to have it out here. we can relax and come on in. >> reporter: but these trains leaving from and arriving in antioch are different than the conventional bart trains. >> it is an electric motor, and it is using renewable diesel. h. they also ride on a standard track gauge like any train.

bart tracks are specific to, well, bart. this means that people traveling from antioch have to switch trains at the nextstation, an 1f >> at first i felt like we were getting short changed. >> it's the jolly trolley. it's not the actual bart train. >> reporter: most of us who feel a little cheated understand why bart decided to go with plan b. follow me. that ten mile extension cost $525 million. had they gone with a conventional bart line it would have cost $1 billion. >> it would have cost twice as much to build. it would have taken twice as long to get that money. once we were able to choose this technology and get the plans in place -- and today we are opening a new system. >> noticeably quiet. the train goes at a nice speed and it is a pleasant ride. >> reporter: service will officially begin making antioch part of the bart transit family. in antioch, abc.news.

parishioners in the south bay are celebrating the resurrection of a church destroyed in a fire four years ago. holy cross church in san jose has been rebuilt and opened its doors to the community yesterday. abc7 news has the emotional day. >> reporter: this is the fiery chaos nearly four years ago. the 100-year-old italian church in san jose went up in flames. the cause of the fire was never determined. foe devastation was unimaginable thr e who >> back in 1951, it was april 1st, i was baptized here. >> reporter: this church goer got to sit in the new sanctuary hours before its official opening. >> i'm glad that the church is back and they didn't building something else here. >> reporter: it allows for more natural light. while the structure is

completely new there are elements from the old church, the original stained glass has been refurbished and the wooden crucifix hangs over the altar. >> to see the stained glass windows put back, and especially dertment take it outhed the fire through the roof. and nothing really happened to it. >> it didn't burn.of people say miracle. the fire fighters brought it down. we restored it and we put it >> reporter: the cost of this new church, $7 million, most of it covered by insurance, and the diocese. the rest raised by parishioners. >> people donated to the fixtures in the church. it's been a beautiful thing for the parishioners to do. >> reporter: the community-wide effort will now allow a new generation of believers to have a place of their own to worship. >> we are really blessed to get our church back. it's not going to be the same church but at least we have a church to go to. >> reporter: a sanctuary to celebrate some of life's most memorable moments.

disk golf is taking a step up in competition. professionals are playing here first ever disk golf pro tour event in the city opened at the glen eagles disk golf course yesterday. the tour itself is in its third year. organizers describe the course has having very challenging terrain. look at that throw. that's pretty impressive. not like my picnics. the giants will officially rebrand for one day next month. on june 16th the club will take the field as the san jose churros. you heard that right. they will pay tribute to the ballpark's olympos churros. made famous by paul, the churro man. the team will don custom companies and jerseys. fans can bid on the jerseys during an ingame silent auction. the first 1,000 fans will get a bobble head. tickets for churro night are still available but selling quickly. i wonder what a churro bobble head looks bobbkelingli. >> we will find out i guess down the road.
