good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm eva pilgrim in for diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." heavy rain in the maryland area turned ellicott city into a raging river. a wedding party was even stranded. off again, on again, it looks like president trump's historic summit with kim jong un may be back on track. a u.s. delegation is now in north korea preparing for the potential high-stakes sit-down just days after the president said it was all off. low blood pressure and fatigue sent former president george h.w. bush to the hospital.

money. >> there is that as well. we'll continue to debate that. we'll continue this half hour with important news. the extreme storms in the east. >> subtropical storm alberto isn't expected to reach hurricane status, but it is bringing heavy rain and strong winds to northern florida. the beaches on this holiday are closed. many memorial day events have been canceled as well. >> but the holiday weekend has already been spoiled by the weather for many in the mid atlantic region. we're taking a look at panama city where alberto is expected to make landfall near there in many hours. >> and even in the overnight hours it appears that there are people there walking on the beach. looks like flashlights there, but the surf does appear to be up slightly. >> clearly all those whitecaps, it's very angry this morning. let's check in now with chuck siebertson. >> reporter: in ellicott city, maryland, the governor declaring

a state of emergency. people climbing to the second floor to escape the rushing water. >> the water is muddy water. it's moving really, really quickly. and there's no way you can cross that. >> reporter: parts of central new jersey have been drenched by more than five inches of rain. and in yardley, pennsylvania, three inches falling in two hours. >> we just had this two weeks ago and now we got it again. >> reporter: alberto expected to make landfall along the gulf coast. >> people should not be on the road. they should be in a safe place to ride out the storm. >> reporter: states of emergency in florida. mississippi and alabama, already bringing strong winds and heavy rains to miami. and this time lapse shows the rain squalls. along the panhandle, beaches closed.

then you add to that the eventual effect of alberto that's still in the gulf but targeting the coast by the afternoon hours. and it will continue to swing its way throughout the mississippi valley region with the residual effect reaching the east coast. now with the powerful force in the pacific there's a new danger created by hawaii's kilauea volcano. it's threatening two of the wells at a geothermal power plant. both have been plugged to prevent the release of a potentially deadly gas. one is already covered in lava. the power plant was shut down earlier this month after kilauea's lava began flowing. american officials are now in north korea making arrangements for the summit that may or may not take place. >> just days after the president backed out of the historic meeting with kim jong un, it may be back on again.

north korea is committed to getting rid of its weapons. bob woodruff has the latest. >> reporter: another surprise meeting. this time a delegation of officials meeting with their counterparts in north korea. the latest attempt to get that summit back on track. the president tweeting i truly believe north korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial nation one day. kim jong un agrees with me on this. it will happen. this diplomatic seesaw coming just days after the leaders of north and south korea exchanged handshakes and even hugs. at the white house this weekend -- >> we're looking at june 12 in singapore, that hasn't changed. >> reporter: a remarkable turn of events after north korea threatened a nuclear to nuclear showdown, even calling the vice president a political dummy. the president canceling the

meeting citing the north's open hostility. but north korea making goodwill gestures, setting off a string of explosions they say destroyed a nuclear testing facility. but marco rubio expressing skepticism. >> he did blow up, it appears, part of his nuclear facility. >> it's a show. i remain convinced he does not want to denuclearize. >> reporter: denuclearization of the korean peninsula, the president's primary goal if that summit takes place. the big question now is what is the ultimate goal? survival of the regime? the high-stakes meetings happening now may shed some light. bob woodruff, abc news, beijing. irish voters doing away with some of the toughest abortion laws.

the 2:1 margin to repeal the abortion ban reflects a weakening of the church, but ireland's prime minister said his country ushered in a new era by stepping out of the shadows into the light. one person is dead and another injured after a fiery plane crash. it went down in omaha and burst into flames. a man was killed and woman was taken to the hospital with severe injuries. both are believed to be the only people on that plane. investigators from the ntsb are looking into the cause there. there was a big fail near pittsburgh. wait for it. wait for it. so that explosion was supposed to be followed by the smokestack falling down. it leaned a little.

but it's still standing. the demolition company says something called a backwall failed. the company said the stack is secure. the demolition is being rescheduled. >> very anti-climactic. a recall has been issued for 228,000 pounds of the canned meat product spam. contamination with metal is reported. it was produced in early february. the expiration date for the one that's recalled is february 21st. >> you eat spam, right? >> i did as a kid. i didn't know better. >> it tastes lovely. i think the whole korean thing, they love spam. >> in belize, it was like a delicacy.

we're back now with a wild we're back now with a wild and dangerous getaway caught on camera here in new york city. >> the driver is accused of trying to run down police officers as he escaped a traffic stop. here's abc's zachary kiesch. >> reporter: the man behind the wheel nearly mowing down three police officers and anyone else in his way. it happened during a traffic stop in new york around 4:00 a.m. that's 27-year-old george lopez surrounded by at least three nypd officers. when cops reach inside, there's a short struggle. then lopez uses the vehicle like a human street sweeper, with the front bumper almost completely torn off, he hops the curb and barrels down a sidewalk, finally breaking free.

police say he got into another crash. that's when they arrested him. three officers were hurt but are expected to be okay. as for that driver, he's in the hospital facing multiple charges. zackary kiesch, abc news, new york. we have an update on an american airlines passenger who launched into a screaming tirade after being denied an in-flight beer. >> dear jesus, right? it happened during a flight from st. croix to miami. they spotted him rummaging through the cabinets at the back of the plane. >> he got into a fistfight with another passenger, screaming, spitting blood. after landing in miami, he was escorted out by four police officers. felix is now facing a detention hearing tomorrow in miami. i mean -- >> over beer? >> over beer. i'm kind of thinking he was already overserved? >> or something.

out of the mid atlantic area, out of maryland, the flooding there. >> the hardest-hit city, ellicott city, about ten miles west of baltimore, main street becoming a raging muddy river, as you can see, washing away some cars and submerging others. the rushing water stormed its way into businesses and restaurants. experts call it a once every 1,000 years flood. >> however, this is the second time it's happened in two years in ellicott city. so far there are no reports of deaths or missing people. that's one weather system we've been keeping an eye on. the other is alberto churning just off the coast of panama city in florida. our tom ralsey is joining us from the d.c. station and has the latest on that ellicott city situation. you just got back from there. >> caller: i did. and i have to tell you, they're almost shell-shocked tonight. two years ago, 2016, they experienced what was supposed to be statistically a flood that

happens every 1,000 years. they didn't expect it to happen again in two years, and it may be worse than a terrible flood that hit them in 2016. i was talking to so many people. i was hearing it again and again. i can't believe this has happened again. talked to one woman who rebuilt her business. it was destroyed two years ago. she said it took so much out of her to rebuild that business. she lives above the business, and now she saw it destroyed again. she said i don't know if i have the energy to rebuild again. for those who have never heard of ellicott city, it's much closer to baltimore. very historic little town. surrounded by what you can almost describe as cliffs, not cliffs, very high hills. there's a river that runs through it. and now twice in two years, there's this gargantuan amount of rain.

>> knowing that alberto is churning in the gulf and more rain is likely headed in that direction, are people looking at that storm and watching it and seeing this water and wondering how this new rain is going to affect them? >> caller: you know, i don't think they're thinking about that yet. what more can it do? the main street for the second time in two years, huge parts of it are destroyed. folks are like at this point, what could more rain do? it wasn't even the amount of rain but how quickly it fell, in a few hours. and for some reason, the statistic improbability of this is enormous. but two times in two years, something you would happen to expect to happen only every 1,000 years. there was a van picked up and laid on its side by the floodwaters, and a whole bunch of other cars thrown all over the place. it was powerful, powerful. >> you were there for 2016, you saw it again here.

which was worse? which was more devastating? >> caller: we haven't gotten to see all the damage yet, but talking to the woman who lost her business in 2016, she had to walk up the hill to escape the floodwaters with her life today. she said i saw these floodwaters today and this was worse. and two years ago it was devastating. i don't know how this town recovers. there's a big thing they call ellicott city strong. i don't know if they have the energy to do it again. >> it's been there since the 1700s, but they've rebuilt over time and they will again. thanks, tom. >> caller: you're welcome. and flooding also a danger in florida thanks to subtropical storm alberto. >> it's gaining strength as it approaches the northern gulf coast.

landfall is likely later today and the governors of florida, mississippi and alabama have declared states of emergency. >> red flags are flying in pensacola, even though landfall is expected 70 miles to the east of there. >> beaches like this one in panama city are deserted. you saw the images early morning in that panama city beach. let's go to accuweather's paul williams. >> we're looking for alberto to continue to cause problems along the coast, as well as the carolinas, alabama and georgia. alberto expected to hit land monday and track along the mississippi valley region into the great lakes region. we're looking for flooding rain throughout all of alabama, up through nashville, tennessee with evacuations possible. and we could see 8-16 inches possible. and those are the early estimates.

a dramatic rescue played out just east of fresno. two brothers trapped in their car upside down after crashing into a canal. rescuers pried one of the men out with the jaws of life as another officer kept the second man's head above water until dive teams could get him out. both suffered minor injuries and are expected to be okay. in the meantime, there are mounting questions about a fatal shooting by a border patrol agent of a 20-year-old woman apparently trying to enter the country illegally. >> the border patrol is now backing off its earlier story about being attacked by an armed group.

here's stephanie ramos. >> reporter: we're learning more about the undocumented woman shot and killed along the texas/mexico border. this woman watching and recording the moments after 20-year-old claudia gomez was shot. >> they flip her, and she had blood here. >> reporter: claudia's mother inconsolable. she says in spanish her daughter left guatemala and came to the u.s. to find work. it was 12:30 wednesday, gomez allegedly crosses into the united states illegally. a border patrol agent then stops the group she's traveling with in a residential area of rio bravo. the border patrol saying an agent opened fire after being attacked by a group armed with blunt objects. but then on friday, the bord er patrol issuing a new statement, making no mention of weapons, instead saying the group rushed the officer. the fbi and texas rangers are now investigating. >> obviously, in his mind he
