it will rapidly lift. it's kind of hazy in other places. that's because of the high pressure bringing us the stagnant air that's going to warm from the low to upper 50s at 7:00. 62 at the coast, 70 by 4:00. 78 to 84 at noon. i hope you can find a pool or lake or somewhere to stay cool. we're going to hit the upper 80s by 4:00. 82 around the bay. 70 at the coast. summer is here. let's find out about the commute. here is alexis. >> we've got summertime volumes. looking live at golden gate bridge. typically one of our lighter commutes early in the morning. of course, on a holiday it's going to be even lighter than it typically is. just a couple vehicles heading southbound across golden gate. i haven't seen the zipper trucks yet. trust me, you don't need the extra room yet. they should be out here this morning. also want to check in on mass transit. a lot of agencies changing service for the holiday. we have this b.a.r.t. track work between concord and pleasant hill.

the ceremony to honor more than 1 million veterans who have given their lives for our country. boy scouts have placed flags at every grave as they do every year. the ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. with a grand march from the presidio officers club to the national cemetery followed by a normal ceremony. scheduled speakers include senator dianne feinstein, lieutenant governor gavin newsom and san francisco mayor mark farrell. a 21-gun salute will happen at noon. >> thank you, cornell. two people died after a plane crashed near the petaluma airport. this morning investigators are trying to figure out what caused the plane to go down. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen spoke to witnesses near the crash scene. >> mayday, mayday, mayday, we have a plane down at petaluma. we need emergency services.

>> reporter: a small plane fell from the sky, half a mile from the petaluma airport. >> picked up power, stalled and we all looked at each other in the eye and it was like, that doesn't sound right. >> jim cane was golfing at the course right next to the airport when the plane went down around 4:00. he and his friends are used to seeing planes take off from the airport and knew immediately something was wrong. >> finally sounded like it stalled completely and spiraled down and onto the roadway. >> i played with a couple of firefighters today. they rushed over. i didn't quite go over there. they come back and just, very sad. >> reporter: a man and woman were on board the plane and unfortunately both did die. the aircraft, a vans rv 6 was a custom manufactured plane that had been in service for quite some time. >> at this point in time we don't know the cause of the accident. it was our understanding is that

it was taken off and may have tried to return to the airport. >> reporter: the ntsb and faa are investigating the crash. the plane is registered to an address in american canyon. >> we sent out the alert about the deadly petaluma plane crash through our abc 7 news app. by the way, that is free to download. make sure you enable the push alert feature to receive breaking news updates like this one. violent crime has risen dramatically in santa clara county. according to a report from the district attorney's office there was a county dlooe wide increase in violent crime. in mountain view violent crime more than 40%. property crimes, especially car break inns saw a broad jump across the county with sunnyvale showing a 20% increase.

a majority is attributed to a violent teen robbery gang which has now been broken up. it covered 2016 through 2017. from our live desk, we're watching things closely on the east coast. floodwaters are receding in a city in maryland. officials are just beginning the grim task of assessing the destruction. take a look at your screen. this is dramatic video from ellicott city. a wall of surging water from a flooding river cascaded down main street taking two-ton cars along for the ride. a state of emergency was also declared there. no fatalities have been reported. cnn reports one person is missing and a similar flood struck ellicott city two years ago killing two residents there and impacting local businesses. so this is deja vu for them, reggie. >> on the opposite side of the country, lava has breached the property of a geothermal power plant. of fernls are monitoring the situation saying plenty of

precautions were taken. at least one well is covered by magma, but it was already plugged. the plugs protect against the release of gas that could turn toxic if mixed with lava. the plant taps heat and steam from the earth's core to spin turbines to generate power. president trump's legal team says if robert mueller's investigation seeks a court order to compel the president to testify, his lawyers will fight it all the way to the u.s. supreme court. the president has been complaining the fbi improperly spied on his campaign. after a briefing, the top democrat adam schiff says there's no evidence to support the claim. >> this is a piece of propaganda the president wants to put out and repeat. they say now that it's out there, we need to investigate it. >> it appears there was an investigation not of the campaign but of certain individuals who have a history that we should be suspicious of. >> president trump is scheduled

to take part in a memorial day wreath laying ceremony later in washington today. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. clock just struck 5:08. some of our warmest temperatures will be in our inland east bay neighborhoods. look at the temperatures now. mid to upper 50s. brentwood at about 62 degrees also. let's take a look at what's going on around other neighborhoods. low to mid 50s up in the north bay and around the bay, mid to upper 50s, 57 right now in san carlos and mountain view at about 58. here is a look at all the sunshine that's about to come up and wash us, with the potential for burning today, especially if you'reout and about doing anything. my activity plan, while it says good because the weather will be conducive, remember to have caution and keep skin protected. mild and sunny at our beaches after a list mist this morning. if you're on the bay, light breezes.

if you're staying cool at the pool, the strong sunshine will come into play. here is a look at the peninsula. 62 at 8:00. mid 70s at noon. look at the 80s from 1:00 to 5:00, back down to a comfortable 70 by 8:00. the east bayshore line, 63 at 8:00 to nearly 80 at noon. definitely the '80s by 1:00 to 5:00. down to 69 by 8:00 this evening. total sunshine the entire day. that's a look at our forecast for now, we'll take a look at our roller coaster in the accuweather seven-day forecast. hopefully not that bad on the roads. here is alexis. >> sure isn't. we have crickets in the traffic center as you would expect on a holiday. taking a live look at the san mateo bridge, i told you about a collision we had around 2:40 this morning. a vehicle somehow went off the roadway on eastbound 92. i went into the marsh lands here off on the side. it does not sound like it was in very deep water.

the driver got out okay. we did see lights over there a few minutes ago. looks like they have cleared. it looks like they have recovered that vehicle and we're clear shortly. also want to check on the central valley, 20 a to 580, check this out. 70 miles an hour. normally down to five, ten miles an hour at this point. enjoy it if you have to work today. colombia's presidential race heading for a runoff election. thousands of immigrants came to san francisco to vote in the election for their homeland. abc 7 news was inside colombia's consulate when voters cast their ballots. this is the first time in more than 50 years colombia will select a new president during a time of peace. >> i agree with the process about peace and social inclusion. >> people are happy. we have seen many people voting. we are hoping that this election will be for the best. >> colombia has 36 million

citizens, more than 800,000 of them live in other nations, including tens of thousands here in the u.s. two ship repair workers are suspected to survive after being hurt on the john in san francisco. these pictures were tweeted out by the san francisco fire department showing the rescue operation at pier 80. firefighters used a pulley system to lower the injured workers from the ship to ambulances on the dock. a showdown caught on camera. the investigation under way. he scaled

woman on the ground. one punching her in the head, under investigation this morning. beachgoers yelling, a baby crying in the background. it happened saturday afternoon in wildwood, new jersey, shocking beachgoers. the video now with more than 2 million views on twitter. the woman at the center of it identified by police as 20-year-old emily wine man from philadelphia charging her with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and minor in possession of alcohol in addition to two counts of assault on a police officer by spitting. the police chief says while he finds this video to be alarming, he does not want to rush to any judgment. we'll have the latest coming up at 7:00 a.m. with your gma first look, eva pilgrim, abc news, new york. child rights activists are calling for a national day of action for children to be held this friday in response to the disclosure that the federal

government lost track of nearly 1,500 immigrant children who arrived in the u.s. without an adult. the disclosure was made last month but has attracted more attention amid reports, immigrant children are being separated from their parents at the border. children's rights advocates says this is as a result of trump's policy to split up families as outlined by the attorney general earlier this month. >> if you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you. that child may be separated from you as required by law. >> meanwhile republican senator marco rubio said yesterday the problem needs to be dealt with, and he is open to changing the administration policy of separating families at the border. happening today, the indiana science teacher who got shot while tackling a school shooter is scheduled to speak. jason siemen

at the suspect. a gofundme at ks han be set up and raised more than $62,000 for the t-shirt. two men are alive this morning thanks to the quick thinking and persistence of first responders in the central valley. look at this video. this is from highway patrol officers and firefighters pulling the men from a car after it overturned in a canal in sanger which is east of frezer in. it took about 15 minutes to free him. rescuers needed another 25 minutes to extract the other man. he survived thanks to an air pocket. firefighters using the jaws of life. racial bias is one of starbucks biggest pr headaches. a chain says it has two strategies for curbing racism. first, hire more people of color as managers. second, create a culture openly discussing racial issues.

red bay coffee's staff is imposed of women, people of color and formerly incarcerated. starbucks is getting ready to hold social bias training tomorrow. it comes after arrest of two african-american men at a starbucks who wanted the use the restroom. a migrant living illegally in france is being called a hero after scaling an apartment building to save a 4-year-old dangling from a fifth floor balcony. >> it's incredible. take a look at the video we have. the 22-year-old sprang into action after seeing the child was in danger. he climb from balcony to balcony until he got to the fifth floor. that's where he was able to grab the child. >> i saw a lot of people yelling, cars were honking. i got out and saw the child who was about to fall from the balcony. i have children. i would hate to see him get hurt

in front of me. i ran and thought of ways to save him. thank god i scaled the front of the building to that balcony. >> the french president will be meeting with him at the presidential palace today. the french media reported that the father of the small child was detained for alleged parental neglect. it's stunning video to see him scale those balconies. wow. >> you hope someone is around like that during a time of need. >> i did the double take. what? that's a baby. my heart kind of stopped. and then that guy. amazing he was there at the right time. >> no kidding. let's talk about what's going on weatherwise. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. if you've been waiting for summer, this is the forecast for you. here is a look at walnut creek, one of those areas that will top 90 for the first time this year. in fact, for a lot of inland neighborhoods, this will be the warmest day this year under total sunshine. the clouds will start coming back to the coast tomorrow.

florida, alabama and mississippi. all three states have already declared states of emergency as they prepare to get a lashing. gusty winds have forced lifeguards to post red flags on the beach warning people about rip currents and high surf conditions. alberto is expected to clock in wind speeds of up to 65 miles per hour. it was on, then off. now on again? president trump says he expect the summit with north korea to go on as scheduled june 12th. mr. trump tweeted yesterday a u.s. team had arrived in the north making arrangements for the summit ending his message with the words "it will happen." the president withdrew from the summit after north korea restri reobjected to strict ground rules. a man stabbed at del lore ross park is expected to survive. fran police say they were called to the park around 7:30 last knight to investigate. they found a man with stab wounds, sent him to the hospital.

police detained several people, but so far they have not made any arrests. two german shepherd puppies are recovering this morning after a bay area organization rescued them from a homeless encampment. the group found the pups saturday night on 89th avenue and d street in oakland. one of the dogs had a paw cut off and is with rocket dog. the other had a ek bro en jaw and is being treated at the hospital. they'll be reunited later today. the casting couch is not a crime but a choice. those are the words of harvey weinstein's lawyer as he prepares the former hollywood mogul's defense. he was walked into a new york courtroom last friday. the film producer denies charges that he raped a woman and forced another to perform oral section. his lawyer is implying his accusers con sensely traded sexual favors to get ahead in their careers. >> mr. weinstein did not invent the casting couch in hollywood. to the extent that there is bad behavior in that industry, that

day. of course, the second half when everyone is heading back into town after the getaway weekend, things may change. we have a little fog out there. i have the visibility layer. if you're traveling through the hayward area, 880, 238, 580, yeah, pretty dense there in some areas. close to zero visibility. you want to slow down and drive for conditions. we have report of smoke around southbound 101, the connector to 680. drive times very light as you would expect. westbound 80 highway 4 to the maze at 18 minutes. seven minutes across the bay bridge. not seeing any metering lights yesterday. southbound 101 san francisco to sfo in the green at nine minutes. health advocates are closely watching a san francisco proposition on the june ballot that could spark a statewide trend, it would ban the sell of candy flavored nicotine

products. proponents of the measure say the products are an epidemic among teens and vaping products are growing in popularity. many users don't realize the active ingredients inside those. >> one pot of juul equals five packs of cigarettes in terms of the nicotine punch in them. this is scary stuff. san francisco being the public health leader that it is, is doing something. >> the fda has opted to delay ruling on whether to ban the products until the year 2022. advocates of the ban say they hope proposition e will start a statewide conversation. a san francisco supervisor is wondering if people should be living on top of libraries. "the examiner" reports the supervisor wants to build affordable housing above library branches. she says libraries are open to creative ideas for future projects. some branches are in the process of renovating. right now there are no plans for existing libraries to make affordable housing an option.

if you ride muni, a heads up. you have a longer trip and extra transfers today because of the planned closure of san francisco's twin peaks tunnel. buses are replacing muni metros lrvs between the st. francis circle and church street station. the tunnel will reopen tomorrow morning. muni now doing some prep work for a 2-month-long closure of the funnel that will begin next month and will renovate the 100-year-old structure. a silent call for help. the lifesaving note police say led them to a woman being abused. closure for a livermore family.

thursday will be breezy but right now looks dry with a temperature of only 62 degrees. police in florida say a woman's desperate plan may have shaved her life. she slichd a note to her vet narch saying her boyfriend had a gun. the note said call the cops, my boyfriend is threatening me. he has a gun. please don't let him know. the woman told investigators she korch vinced her boyfriend to take the dog to the vet. she passed the note to the staff and they called police. officers got there, arrested the man and now he's being held without bail. strange story out of redding. a pilot and his assistant at a flight school face kidnapping and conspiracy charges after police say they tried to deport a student. police say they went to the student's home last week to tell them they would be sending him back to china. they went back the next day and

weekend having the answers for which they've waited decades. thousands of motorcyclists roared into washington, d.c. to honor american forces who never came home. this is called rolling thunder. it attracts motorcyclists from all across america. many of them are veterans. yesterday's ride took them from the pentagon across the potomac river and along washington's national mall. rolling thunder wrapped up with a memorial day concert at the u.s. capitol. don't feel guilty about sleeping in on weekends. a new study shows that getting more sleep on saturday and sunday morning may actually extend your life. the study was published in the journal of sleep research. researchers found people who get less sleep during the week but sleep in on weekends compared to those who get seven hours per night had similar mortality rates. there's no clear answer yet on why sleeping on weekends makes the difference. researchers do think that perhaps short sleepers are catching up on the sleep they
