thousands never miss it each year. now, just a couple hours ago, volunteers were busy with flowers paying tribute to all veterans laid to rest. volunteers started early with red roses, paying tribute to so many of the fallen laid to rest at the national cemetery. >> we're going to drop 26425 roses over the next few hours to cover every headstone. >> reporter: employees organized the event inspired by similar gestures at arlington national cemetery, inviting anyone to take part. he and his son wanted to spend the day here in this place of peace and honor. >> it's the ultimate sacrifice, and it's, you know, it's just very hum bling to be out here in a place like this, so we just wanted toom c esomething. >> reporter: for wynona, it's navy, my husband is active duty

navy. >> reporter: others read the name of each grave marker, each veteran, before places a rose. >> each of a gravestone 12 a person going back to the 1800s. all the people who made sacrifices. it's not insignificant. >> reporter: we're back live where this memorial day ceremony is about to get underway. i have to tell you, volunteers started at 8:00 this morning. they were done, believe it or not, by 10:00 a.m. today. it's the first year this rose distribution has happened. many volunteers say it's not the last. we're live at the presido, abc 7 news. >> a nice gesture, thank you. president trump marked his second memorial day as commander in chiefly bying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. president trump stood by general joseph dunford, and the defense secretary. before the ceremony, he tweeted, those who died for our great

country would be happy and proud of how well our country is doing today. he was then criticized for his self-congratulatory tone. others tweeted, this day of all days of the year should not be about any one of us. every year families and volunteers head to arling fon where more than 420,000 veterans and relatives are buried, placing flags at each headstone, and it's centered in place in a specific spot one foot in front of the headstone and all flags are removed before the cemetery opens again to the public. we posted a list of memorial day commemorations in the bay area at abc 7news.com and our abc 7 news app. new this morning, eight people including a child were inside a van that plunged 150 feet into the canal. this happened around 6:00 a.m. northbound i-680 near the 580 merger. you see from the video just how

far that white toyota careened off the roadway and into the water. emergency crews said everyone inside the vehicle was able to get out just fine and injuries were reported. investigators have not released details on what may have caused that crash. north bay investigators are trying to find the cause of a deadly plane crash that went down yesterday morning. it was a vaned rv 6, amateur built custom manufactured plane. people golfing near the airport knew immediately something was wrong. >> finally just sounded like it stalled completely and spired down, and on to the roadway. >> played with a couple fire fighters, and they rushed over. i did not go over there, and they come back and just said, they're dead. >> a man and woman were on the m plane and died. they believed the plane took off and attempted to return to the airport. going to turn now to what is

want to be. even tourists from overseas have warriors fever. these visitors from poland were first inside the warriors store this morning to grab some blue and gold souvenirs. >> it is the best team in nba the last few years, yeah? so that's why we are here. >> reporter: the warriors are not here. players boarded the plane yesterday for houston to play game seven. the fans still want to be here at the home of the warriors, so team officials set up a watch party here. a fan was here first thing this morning looking for a ticket. she'd rather be here than at home because of the party-like atmosphere. >> i'm from oakland, and i love the warriors, and, yeah, i want to watch -- i want to see us get another parade. >> reporter: the a's have a day game next door today. their fans are realizing they could walk from their game to the watch party and make it a complete oakland sports day. >> i'm going to try to get to the watch party. i don't have a ticket, though. here for the a's first. warriors second.

shooter friday at noblesville west middle school and ran towards the gunfire to tackle the suspect. this morning, he explained what was going through his mind. >> my actions on that day, in my mind were the only acceptable actions i could have done given the circumstances. i deeply care for my students and their well being, and so i did what i did that day. >> amazing guy. he thanked the hospital, community, and students at the school. one student set up a go fund me account for him raising more than $66,000. and this is incredible. look at this. a migrant from mali living in france is called a hero. you see that he's scaling up an apartment building to save a 4-year-old child dangling from a fifth floor balcony. he's 22 years old sprang into action seeing the child was in danger. you can see he lifts his whole body bank balcony to balcony and

grabs the child. >> translator: yelling, cars honking, i got out, and i saw the child who was about to fall from the balcony. i like children, so i would hate to see him get hurt in front of me. i ran, and i thought of ways to save him, and thank god i scaled the front of the building to that balcony. >> so impressive. that french president macron met him today at the presidential palace and granted him citizenship. the french media reported the father of the small child was detained for alleged rental neglect. rushing into harm's way to save people from a wall of water. the search is on for the first responder now missing after that massive flooding. it's video that's sparking intense online reaction. a police officer caught punching a 20-year-old woman at the head at the beach. heifer actions he says caused this encounter.

national guard and swept away last night trying to help rescue people from the flooding. abc's david curly has the latest on the cleanup and the search. >> reporter: just outside a baltimore, maryland, a historic community of the city was engulfed by flood waters, main street hit by 8 inches of rain, much in an intense three hours, and the streets turned into rivers. >> flooded with water. water was coming in through the walls. >> reporter: people trapped in buildings, climbing to higher floors to await help, and now one person is reported missing. >> that person, we've been told, seen at 5:20 p.m. that's the only person we're aware of that is missing, not aware of fatalities, doing whatever we can to locate the person today. >> reporter: howard county executive toured the damage in the area, which was just being rebuilt after a devastating flood just two years ago. >> my heart's broken. when i walk through the town and

see it, frankly, wathan it was july of 2016. damage is worse. hard to believe, but it's worse. >> reporter: states of emergency is florida and mississippi and alabama as the first named storm of the hurricane season, alberto, is expected to land today. the storm is expected to clock in winds of 65 miles per hour, florida's panhandle may bear the brunt of it. in maryland, a state of emergency, officials saying now the priority is finding the missing man and assessing the condition of buildings. abc news, maryland. you know, one of the neat things we do with live doppler 7 is estimate how much rain fell over a certain area. this is what we have in bu baltimore. this is the bull's eye in the suburb of baltimore. east, you see more than 10.5 inches, and it has nowhere to go. that's why they have the

flooding. now, let's talk about alberto. it's spinning in the florida panhandle throwing some moisture up towards that area, eventually, it gets there, but it's not going to get heavy, thankfully, but it's not going to take much to cause flooding out of everything saturated, watching that in the entire southeast for more flooding. that's the big story from alberto. not the winds. here's what's going on at home. hazy sun from sutro tower. warmest day this year for our inland valleys issue especially the east bay, where we have not hit 90 yet at any of the official reporting stations, which is technically concord and livermore. tonight, coastal clouds coming back, signifying a cooling trend, working from the coast. pier 39 looks gorgeous this morning. and our temperatures will run today anywhere from 9-12 degrees above average. starting to think 74 in san francisco may be just a couple degrees too cool. here's what's going on in santa
