sampling of summer. abc 7 news was at oakland, lake merritt where people enjoyed the sun or relaxed in the shade. taking a live look from the abc 7 pier 39 camera. some areas saw highs in the 90s. sea lions keeping it cool on the water. abc 7 meteorologist drew tuma is here. >> such a cool month of may through the region. we soared into the 90s in a lot of spots. 91 the high in san jose. 95 in concord. a warm 80 degrees in oakland. even san francisco at 76 degrees. it's going to be a comfortable evening on the way. future tracker temperatures by 8:00 tonight. still mild out there. 60s and 70s under clear skies. tomorrow morning, sunshine from the get-go means a mild start to the day. even midday, here we go again. the numbers close to 90 degrees

by noon tomorrow. the heat holds on for another day. by wednesday, we have a major cooldown coming our way. we'll detail the changes the next couple of days in a few minutes. thank, drew. new details about the two people killed in a plane crash in the north bay. it happened near the petaluma airport yesterday afternoon. we have new information about what happened in the seconds before the crash. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has an update. >> mayday, mayday. we have a plane down at petaluma. >> it happened in a matter of seconds. a plane crash that killed a couple from carmichael a few hundred yards from the airport where they had just taken off. >> we need emergency services. >> the power stalled. we all looked at each other in the eye and it was like, it doesn't sound right. >> the pilot himself shot this video. o'brien said the plane was 800 feet in the air when it backfired and it banked to the

right as if to try to return to the airport. instead, it twirld to the ground. the sister of the pilot identified them as richard and sue bristow from carmichael. over the phone, bristow's sister said we're devastated by a sudden loss. richard was an excellent pilot. it was his passion. we believe it must have been something mechanical. the plane he was flying was a van's rv 6. custom manufactured aircraft. bristow's have been in service since 1996. both the faa and ntsb are investigating. laura anthony, abc 7 news. ceremonies across the bay area marked this memorial day paying tribute to those who gave their lives serving our country. kar carolyn tyler joins us with more. >> for many people, it's just a day off. for those who served and lost family members, it's a day on, on the calendar to honor that

ultimate sacrifice. >> something new on this holiday now 150 years old. at the national cemetery in san francisco's presidio, a red rose was gently laid on each of 26,425 headstones. boyd mcgowan, a navy reservist and his son patrick were among those placing the flowers. >> i think it's an important thing for everybody to think about. the true spirit of the holiday. >> traditionally the flags were placed. the roses were courtesy of employees from sunset scavenger who added another poignant touch. >> we're going to read every headstone and every soldier buried here today. we're going to read their name. >> it's one of the largest events and equally heartfelt was this gathering in walnut creek. >> in mountain view, a color guard kicked off the event

including a wreath laying ceremony by family members of the fallen. red paper poppies, a symbol of world war i were laid on the memorial at eagle park. there was pomp and circumstance in san bruno at the golden gate national cemetery. among the large crowd were gold star families who lost loved ones. the east eps from campbell laid a wreath for their son adam who died in iraq in 2004. >> we are both honored with the fact that our son is remembered and all soldiers are remembered and we're also given a duty to help remind our community what that sacrifice is about. >> and what memorial day truly means. carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. several generations of veterans came together to salute south bay service members who died for their country. >> ♪ >> bagpipes played before

today's posting of military colors at oak hill memorial park in san jose. hundreds gathered for the annual memorial day ceremony there to honor those who died to protect our freedom. our own abc 7 news reporter dan noyes had the privilege of emceeing today's event. ♪ >> stirring rendition of the national anthem helped kick off the memorial day ceremony at the auditorium in san rafael. the ceremony continued outside including the laying of wreaths in honor of the marin county veterans who fought and died for their country. >> we have a look at a number of local ceremonies in the bay area on our website. abc7news.com. also the story of america's oldest world war ii veteran celebrating his 112th birthday. starbucks will close its

stores tomorrow so employees can undergo racial bias training. abc 7 was in san jose where signs are posted informing of tomorrow's closure. the training is part of an apology after two black men were arrested after wait -- attendance is not mandatory. but employees will be paid if they attend. licensed stores not owned by starbucks like in airports and retail stores won't close for training. a san francisco pet shelter just received dozens of dogs. >> all kisses. >> those cuties were taken in once, but need to be rescued again. the bay area effort to help them find forever homes. space or bust. the great race to be the first to offer private space travel. the billionaire who says he'll soon blast off. many credit cards are no longer offering a long-standing perk. mi

new at 5:00, dozens of unwanted pets rescued by a woman in vacaville need rescuing again following her death. the dogs are getting help at muttville in the mission district. melanie woodrow has the story. >> the final batch of dogs arrived at muttville in san francisco's mission district this morning. the dogs rescuer passed away unexpectedly. >> there's no replacing her. she was one of a kind. she opened her home to all of them. >> friend amanda hoover says she had horse at her ten-acre home in vacaville. >> she gave these guys a life that most wouldn't have. >> kelly, also a friend, discovered marlene had passed away. >> she pulled on my dress and showed me where to find her. >> the other dogs are here now where they're being checked out before they can be adopted.

>> we have to do this for your exam. belly rub. >> asked for help and they welcomed all of them with open arms. >> luckily, foster parents were available to take home many of the dogs here making room for more. >> they're fabulous dogs. we know we're going to find them homes really fast. >> the founder and ceo is encouraging pet owners to have a plan in place in case they pass away. >> like marlene, she died suddenly. if she hadn't had the friends she had and muttville hadn't stepped up, some of the dogs might have ended up in a shelter and gotten euthanized. >> this is valencia, she's available for adoption. the adopt-a-thon will be this week end at muttville from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 255 alabama street. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. the fbi is urging the public to restart their home routers after a large-scale malware attack compromised half a
