the devastation in ellicott city, maryland, building after building destroyed. these two cars upended. sidewalks torn apart. roads washed away. more than 8 inches of rain falling in just 3 hours transforming main street in a raging river. 300 people were rescued, but this morning the search continues for eddie hermond. he was visiting a mexican restaurant when he fell into the floodwaters while trying to help a woman searching for her cat. the national guardsman's best friend, joseph lopez, was watching as it all unfolded. >> he took a couple of steps in and it just swept him away. >> reporter: it's been called a thousand-year storm, but this is the second in two years, and local officials say this was even worse than 2016. abc's david kerley on the scene. >> the debris is actually here. this is how high the water got to actually, but look over the side where the creek is running now. here is one car, a tree, two other cars, a dumpster, a 55-gallon drum. that's how powerful this water was. >> reporter: farther south

another flash flooding threat. the remnants of tropical storm alberto is dumping heavy rains after making landfall on the florida panhandle. its outer band spawning a tornado outside port st. lucie in what's being called a freak accident, tragedy striking a local tv news crew. >> our news family grieves over the loss of two two special journalists and two special friends. >> reporter: news anchor mike mccormick and photojournalist aaron smeltzer were covering alberto when a tree fell on their suv. >> it affected me because i had done an interview with mr. mccormick about ten minutes before we got the call, and we had talked a little bit about how he wanted us to stay safe and how we wanted him to stay safe, and then, of course, 10, 15 minutes later we get the call, and it was him and his photographer. >> very sad, indeed. our thoughts are with the

families of those journalists who died. alberto, by the way, still poses a flooding threat across several states. we're going to have the accuweather forecast in just a few moments. an american is finally back home in utah this morning after two years in a venezuelan prison. hundreds of supporters greeted joshua holt and his wife at the airport last night. he said his faith and prayers helped him survive the ordeal which started as a wedding. abc's stephanie ramos has more on the emotional homecoming. stephanie, what a bizarre story. >> reporter: absolutely, diane. what a weekend for the holt family. joshua holt and his wife went straight from venezuela to the white house, and then today they're trying to get back to a normal life in utah. joshua holt and his wife are back home in utah after being imprisoned in a venezuelan jail for almost two years. holt, his wife tamara and his stepdaughter arrived at the salt lake city airport overnight to a joyous crowd holding signs with

messages like "we never gave up." >> we're grateful to be here and we're grateful to be here with our family. >> reporter: holt's emotional grandmother draping this american flag over his shoulders while the crowd sang "the star-spangled banner." ♪ the land of the free >> reporter: this was a day holt's parents feared would never happen. >> now i have my family all together. >> reporter: the 26-year-old mormon missionary was imprisoned in june of 2016 shortly after marrying a venezuelan woman he met online. as they waited for her u.s. visa, they were charged with dealing weapons and plotting to undermine the government, which they say is not true. after months of negotiations between the u.s. and venezuelan government through diplomatic channels, the holts were freed on saturday and flew to washington, d.c. to meet president trump. >> almost two years, josh, and, you know, amazing that you were able to take it. you've gone through a lot, more than most people could endure. >> reporter: holt's imprisonment received a lot of attention from u.s. senators including senator

orrin hatch of utah and senator bob corker, who actually made a surprise visit to venezuela last week and secured holt's release. kendis, diane, back over to you. >> well, sounds like job well done. stephanie ramos in d.c. for us. thanks, steph. we turn now to the diplomatic maneuvering aimed at making sure the canceled summit between president trump and kim jong-un gets back on track. a top north korean official arrived in beijing overnight and the united states is his next stop. in the meantime, president trump is now planning another meeting with japan's prime minister. u.s. delegations have traveled to north korea and singapore, but there's still no official word on whether the summit will be rescheduled. the white house is only saying that the summit with kim jong-un is expected. and we have dramatic new video from hawaii showing the lava from the kilauea volcano destroying more homes. you can see two houses on the edge of the subdivision engulfed in flames. ten more homes have now been lost bringing the total to 51.

emergency crews used a drone with infrared to determine if any homeowners had ignored evacuation orders, and then they went door to door to get anyone who did out. the lava has also overtaken two wells at a nearby power plant, but officials say right now there's no risk to any other section of the plant. tourism bookings have dropped by nearly 50% on the big island even though the eruption is affecting only a small area. a republican congressman from virginia has announced he will not run for re-election because he's battling alcoholism. congressman thomas garrett says he wants to focus on his recovery and his family. but his announcement comes after the website politico reported that he and his wife used his office staff to run their personal errands and even take care of their dog. time now for a look at your weather on this tuesday morning. good morning. we're still tracking alberto with the heaviest rain throughout alabama, throughout georgia but covering the entire southeast.

we're back with video of a fire destroying some ten condos at this senior living center in stuart, florida. deputies went door to door trying to make sure that everyone got out safe. a resident reportedly told officials he dropped a cigarette in the apartment where all that started. a science teacher at a middle school in india has been given a hero's welcome days after taking down a school shooter. 29-year-old jason seaman took three bullets as he lunged at the student who entered his class and started firing. one of his students, 13-year-old ella whistler, was shot and critically wounded. seaman told reporters he just did what he needed to. >> my actions on that day in my mind were the only acceptable actions i could have done given the circumstances. i deeply care for my students and their well-being. so, that's why i did what i did that day. >> now, police still have not publicly identified the shooter or a possible motive. the school will re-open this morning not for classes but supervised counseling to

taking issue with a trailer that says no sesame, all street. the production company says it's confident in its legal position. mary kay letourneau, the teacher who went to jail for having an affair with a sixth grader, is looking to set the record straight. so, letourneau was a 35-year-old married mother of four when she got pregnant with the 13-year-old student. well, now more than 20 years after the scandal made headlines, letourneau is the new focus of an a&e special. she says she's not sorry for having her former student's children or marrying him afterwards but surprised that others have had similar affairs after hers. >> it's just that any teacher after what happened to me would go there. at least i can say that i did not know that it was a law and you knew. after my case, you knew. >> well, the couple is now in counseling, by the way. he filed for legal separation last year, but letourneau says

they're still living together. the houston rockets may have nightmares about the last two games of the nba's western conference final. last night's game seven against golden state was just like game six. the rockets built up a double-digit lead and then blew it. houston missed 27 consecutive three-pointers and lost 101-92. the warriors move on to play lebron james and the cavaliers in the finals for the fourth straight year. game one is thursday in oakland at 9:00 p.m. eastern here on abc. >> we're looking forward to it. well, hockey is still what's happening in vegas. the first year golden knights hosted game one of the stanley cup finals, and magician there criss angel and rapper lil jon got the crowd revved up. they didn't need it. the knights went on to beat the capitals from washington, d.c., 6-4. game two is tomorrow night in vegas. it was a good game actually. well, forget rain delays. some little leaguers outside chicago may have seen the first dustnado delay. this one happened in libertyville, illinois.
