that welcomed us into their homes. overnight roseanne's latest tweets alternating between contrite and combative. one tweet reading, hey, guys, don't defend me. it's sweet of you to try but losing my show is zero compared to being labeled a racist over one tweet. i regret that even more but she also retweeted a slew of comments like these, just imagine if any leftist celeb got this treatment and in response to the comment i personally thought valerie jarrett was hispanic, roseanne replied, i thought she was saudi. and you probably noticed that in the piece, but what seemed to be the trend of roseanne's night was this alternation between contrition and attack. now, after apologizing to her cast and crew she then personally went after her tv children, responding to gilbert's statement that roseanne's posts were abhorrent with a wow, unreal then she turned on her tv son, michael fishman, who plays d.j., and as you saw she -- he wrote how

pushback too from mexico's president. the president, trump was barely off the stage before enrique pena nieto tweeted, no, mexico will never pay for a wall, not now, not ever, sincerely, mexico. george. >> cecilia, at this point the president has every reason to know that what he's saying about the infiltration in his campaign is not true. congress has been briefed. yet he keeps on repeating it. >> reporter: he sure does and calls are getting louder by republicans and his own allies. >> thanks very much. robin. now a new twist in that on again off again summit with north korea. the white house now say it's expecting the summit to take place. a top korean official is heading to the u.s. this morning to lay the groundwork. our chief foreign correspondent terry moran is tracking all the back and forth. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning. this morning a flurry of diplomatic activity taking place across the globe as officials in the u.s. and north korea and south korea all are scrambling to save this summit racing against the clock. it was just six days ago, remember, that president trump called the whole thing off but

nashville with more. good morning to you, steve. >> reporter: good morning, michael. it is continuing to rain here in nashville, but what's interesting is what's left of this subtropical storm is the least of our problems this morning. there are now separate weather systems across the country bringing flooding and tornadoes. it was a frightening night for families north of oklahoma city. what looked like a tornado came barreling toward this building. >> oh, right there. >> right there. >> right there. >> reporter: as the sirens rang out, people ran for their lives. >> it's right there. >> reporter: at one point the roof falls in. police say no one was seriously hurt. >> the roof blew off the eastman building. >> reporter: when the winds died down, the place was in pieces. the roof left hanging off the side of the building. high winds and hard-hitting hail swept across the heartland overnight, and on the east coast a different weather system entirely is causing flash

flooding and forcing the evacuation of families in rural north carolina who live near a dam. >> vehicle collision landslide, vehicles trapped. >> reporter: east of asheville a mudslide shut down all but one lane of i-40 stranding drivers. and in georgia's high falls state park, two teens who police say ignored warnings were stuck on rocks near the waterfall and had to be rescued when it was too dangerous for them to make it back to dry land. police who often have to make rescues at that location are considering charges. >> we're getting tired of pulling folks off the river. this is not rocket science. keep yourself out of the river. when it looks like this you're going to die, not to mention we keep sending firefighters out but these guys have families too. >> reporter: today the severe weather stretches from the rockies to the southern plains. there were more than 200 reports of severe weather across this same area yesterday. george. >> rough night, okay, thanks very much, steve. now to that political

scandal in missouri where governor eric greitens has announced he will resign stepping down under political and legal pressure facing mounting allegations that began with the disturbing account from his ex-mistress and alex perez he's in jefferson city with the latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. legislators here at the capitol already started the impeachment process. the governor vowed to remain in office but all of that suddenly changed with his surprise announcement. missouri governor eric greitens once a rising star in the republican party who ran on family values overnight buckling under pressure. >> i am announcing that i will resign as governor of missouri. >> reporter: the embattled governor unable to survive bipartisan criticism that began swirling after he was charged with felony invasion of privacy, those charges stemming from an affair with his former hairdresser before he was governor. a case that grabbed national headlines. the woman accused him of taking a partially nude photo of her and threatening to distribute it if she told anyone of their

sexual encounters. greitens admitted to the affair but denied any wrongdoing. >> this ordeal has been designed to cause an incredible amount of strain on my family. >> reporter: investigators never found the alleged picture and those charges were dismissed. >> a great deal of work is left undone. the time has come, though, to tend to those who have been wounded. >> reporter: his legal troubles are not over just yet. a special prosecutor is now taking a second look at that invasion of privacy charge. the governor's resignation is effective friday. >> we'll learn more on that today. thanks, alex. robin. now to hawaii. new concerns from that volcano, lava flows crossing a highway cutting off a critical access point. abc's whit johnson is on hawaii's big island. good morning, whit. >> reporter: good morning to you. you can see and hear this incredible lava fountain bursting a couple hundred feet into the air from the earth. this is coming from fissure number 8. we've been watching it over the

past few days. but this is the most active we've seen it so far. beneath it a riv of lava. in some places moving up to 500 yards per hour. compare th tearlier stages in this eruption whereheava was moving just 13 feet per hour. now, hawaii county is now reporting at least 75 homes destroyed. that's up from 51 homes just a day ago. officials updating their accounting. also a trace amount of volcanic haze is now blowing all the way to guam. nearly 4,000 miles away from the big island according to the national weather service. and the lava flows continue to cause problems for evacuations. it crossed highway 132. that's a critical access point making it tougher for people to get out. guys, back to you. >> all right, whit, long way from that being over. we're going to turn now to a big win for serena williams. she advanced in her first major tournament since maternity leave winning in state sets in the first round of the french open and let's say her outfit had

back now with acto back now with actor morgan freeman fighting back against that cnn report demanding a retraction from the network over their story accusing the oscar winner of sexual misconduct. abc's linsey davis is here with more on all that. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning. morgan freeman's legal team has sent cnn a ten-page letter essentially saying take it back and say you're sorry. this after cnn's report last week where several women said they had been sexualarassed by the now 80-year-old actor. the law firm representing morgan is calling it journalistic malpractice. this morning morgan freeman is hitting back demanding cnn apologize and retract an article in which eight women accused the veteran actor of sexual misconduct. cnn entertainment reporter, chloe melas, is one of the

cnn stands by its reporting and will respond forcefully by any attempt by in freeman or his representatives to intimidate us from covering this important public issue. robin. >> thank you, linsey and our chief legal analyst dan abrams is here now. we heard there cnn standing by the story. what's your take? >> look, let's separate this out journalistically from legally. let's start with it journalistically. you have the two named alleged victims in the story having issues with their account. number one person coming forward and saying, look, i didn't have any concerns about the way he was treating me and the second one is the author herself who claims that that piece of tape there where he says i wish i was there was somehow sexual or inappropriate, and then you put it into the context and it sounds like he's talking about michael caine's comment. so, those are two legitimate journalistic concerns that i'm surprised that cnn is so sort of cavalierly dismissing and simply saying, we're standing by the story. no changes are appropriate.

>> something like that. okay. the legal aspect now. >> all right, much tougher issue here. there to be able to sue here, to be able to win a lawsuit, they'd have to be able to prove that the writer knew or should have known that there were things in the article that were false, not just misinterpreted, not just misleading. you need false facts that were ated in the context of the article, and that's where it gets trickier, and that's where it gets tougher, and that's where there's going to have to be a really tough decision made by morgan freeman and his attorney, which is if they do sue and they do move forward, what about all of these other anonymous sources. are -- >> there's a risk there perhaps. >> exactly. that's right. are there other women who are going to come forward and say things about morgan freeman that would be detrimental to him? and it's going to be an interesting decision as to whether they actually move forward. but this letter that they sent is framed in legal language

what was your motivation we saw your daughter. >> my daughter primarily. i mean, you know, you never want to see your child suffer, you know, and to see her face. she tried to hold it in that day she said her classmate called me fat but at that moment i knew i had to change and i'm also a singer and i was declined so many opportunities with, you know, record deals because of my image but, you know, that just taught me to fight for me and stay consistent. i would wake up at 4:00 a.m. in the morning and jog at 5:00 every morning. seven days a week. that's someone who would never get up at 6:00 in the morning. you know what i'm saying but it's imperative that you consistently fight for you and not focus on the scale primarily but fix on nonscale victories. i crossed my legs's ages of 31. that's things i could never do. >> the consistency. >> stay consistent, fight for you d you'll do . >> thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
