breg news. >> a series of fires in the east bay. seven separate fires broke out in eastern contra costa county >> you can see the flames destroyed several fires in the very windy out there. >> this is a live look at the scene right now. you can see that smoke traveling off of it, bus of that wind. good afternoon. thank you for joining us today. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. larry beil son assignment. all of the fires are in the area of byron and mountainhouse where 508 owe 580 merges with 205. >> the first report of flames came in at 1:00. abc 7 news reporter is on his which to the scene and joins you live from the phone. what you tell us. >> eporter: good afternoon, guys actually on highway 4 in route to the fires. now the multiple fires they started just after 1:00 this

afternoon along the byron as you mentioned and the south discovery bay area. the fire officials say a total of seven fires burned a little more than 400 acres now. the flames have been driven by gusty winds. gusts we're told as strong as 30 miles an hour. so far no reports of any injuries. but several outbuilding have been damaged or destroyed. we also have video from sky7 showing some vehicles, some trailers up in flames. but, again, no homes have been lost. officials at this point just tell us that some of these have been outbuildings, small structures consumed by the fires. we have seen multiple agencies out here that are actually out here investigating this. alameda county, east contra costa, fire protection as well as calfire. so they're working to determine a cause of the fire. so far no cause has been given.

but, again, just with the video from sky7 we saw officials making fire retardant drops, water drops trying to cane the fire. what we know so far is that byron highway between 20 a and highway 4 is closed. that's causing some traffic backups in the area. officials are hoping people in the area mostly residents to avoid the area as they work to determine what started fires. >> okay, carlos. on route to the scene. we appreciate it as you look at the live picture from sky7 over multiple fires burning near byron and the mountainhouse and you see the scorched earth. notice how dramatically the smoke is pushed by the winds. it's breezy out there and fanning the flames. >> we'll check with spencer in a moment but let's head to kristen

sze for a closer look at the fire and some of the images and on social media. >> ama and dan the first thing we notice as sky7 approached the fires in the byron mountainhouse alt month pass is how close they burn to the wind turbans. you can tell from the turbans just how fast the winds are blowing today. sky7 gives the wide shoe that shows how close the fires are to one another. i'm pausing it so we can look at how many we can count in the picture alone. here is one right here. another one, two, three, four, and there is one here. you can he see the smoke spreading in that direction. all of this of course the result of the winds we're talking about scattering the embers and quickly trying aring additional fires in the dry grass. sky7 giving up this close look here at one of the helicopters being used to gather water to dump on the flames. luckily the christon court

forebay is there. the rest roir is the starting point of the california aqueduct which sends water to southern california being put to use today. we see this image, dozens of cattle grazing near the wind turbines and suddenly in tanker as we pull out you see how close the fires are to the cows. finally sky map 7 showing the byron highway. closed in both directions as carlos mentioned. you want to avoid the area until further notice. dan and ama. >> thank you. let's go to spencer christian for a closer look at the high winds blowing in the area of the fires right now spencer. >> we have powerful gusts out there. and we don't expect the wind to ease up. let's look at weather conditions near the fires right now. 66 degrees. cool over there. and the relatively humidity is not low. 4%. but we have wind gusts to 25-mile-per-hour. let's look at the storm perhaps the path of the wind as it

travels toward the fires. from the diablo range at 1,100 feet gusting at 45-mile-per-hour. as the wind downslopes it speeds up and dries outing itself of the moisture that might kent contain the fires. we have strong gusty wind and drying air as it downsleps. and when we see gusts over 30-mile-per-hour. and the wind gust animation showing us during the overnight it will remain gusty. maybe not as strong in the inland areas as right now. but it will still be stronger than average with not much let up tomorrow. we'll have gusts on the coast over 30-mile-per-hour and wind gusts in the bay and the inland areas 15 to 20 miles an hour. a closer look in a few minutes. >> thanks. new details from concord this afternoon. federal have investigators determined the fire destroying an apartment complex under construction last month was arson. today the atf released surveillance video of the suspect in that fire on april

24th. watch now. the fire was reported around 1:00 a.m. and resulted in about $55 million in damage. it was a monstersous fire. 250 people in nearby apartments forced to evacuate. the atf is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of this fire bug. now to more breaking news, this time out of san francisco where a body has been found on the grounds of san francisco general hospital. >> abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow life with the latest developments. >> reporter: dan and ama moments ago we saw the medical examiner van pulling out presumably with the woman's body. this is what we know. the body was discovered on the ground of zuckerberg general hospital but not exactly within the hospital, rather in the stairway of the power plant building you are looking at. discovered at about 1:00 this afternoon. according to the department of public health by a hospital

staff member. however a source with knowledge of the investigation is telling abc 7 news that it was an engineer who discovered the woman's body. the case is being investigated by the department of public health, the san francisco sheriff, the san francisco police department and the san francisco fire department. obviously part of the investigation here will be to determine the cause of death which is unknown at this time. that being said, there is a lot of talk here by hospital employees as they are walking in and out of the hospital this afternoon about this having happened once before. and that was in 2013. you might remember a woman's body was found in a stairway at sf general in 2013. the woman was named lynn spalding and she had been found 17 days a after missing from her room. in that case it was an engineer that was conducting a quarterly inspection of a fire exit that discovered spalding's body. no again, it's still early here.

just about three hours after this woman's body was found. we don't know whether or not this woman was a patient at the hospital or from elsewhere. that will of course be part of this investigation. and some of the information that we're hoping to hear in a few minutes here at 4:30 during a press conference, the department of public health spokesperson said that press conference will only include the information that we know thus far. as soon as it changes we will update you. live in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7. >> thank you. well san francisco' mayor wants to hire and train 90 more dispatchners the city's 911 call center in the next two years in part because of the dramatic rise in incoming calms. >> abc 7 news reporter vic lee with this story, vic. >> reporter: ama the stats speak for themselves in the past 7 years there's been a whopping 44% increase in the number of 911 calls in the city. it's been tough for the dispatchers to keep up. obviously they need more

staffing. >> anyone calling 911 in our city needs to make sure there is a live person on the end of the line. >> mayor mark farrell planned to spend $8 million to hire 90 more zpachtsers in the 911 center comes at a critical time. dispatchers are answering 88% of 911 calls within ten seconds. they're inchesing close to the national standard which is 90% of the time. but it's been a log in constitutingle to reach this point. and call volumes continue to increase dramatically. >> dispatchers answering approximately 1,000 more calls per day. that's 1,000 more calls per tai since seven years ago sfla while the call center continued to be understaffed. 127 dispatchers currently work at the center. the ideal number is 160. long-term dispatcher debra saddam bran o says that means

overtime and holidays. >> it's tough when you have to stay is it 12. >> to make matters worse. >> 40% of our calls coming in really are not emergencies. >> the mayor wants to alokate more money to defort the calls to the 311 non-emergency system. the sheriffs department will share in the emergency response budget. it will get nearly $15 million to purchase new equipment and firefightering apparatus and vehicles for quick response team that would operate 24/7. if in the past five years the department has experienced a 25% in its call volume. >> we run over 150,000 calls per year. and we pride ourselves on getting to the scene within about a five-minute time period. >> again, of the mayor's two-year budget proposal the the allocations for emergency response programs total $4 million. now the mayor will submit the budget to the supervisors this

i support the affordable care act, and voted against all trump's attempts to repeal it. but we need to do more. i believe in universal health care. in a public health option to compete with private insurance companies. and expanding medicare to everyone over 55. and i believe medicare must be empowered to negotiate the price of drugs. california values senator dianne feinstein all right. we are just one day away from the start of another nba finals here on abc 7 between of course the warriors and the cleveland cavaliers again. you know kevin current durant is one of the top players of course for the warriors. but you know why he always seems to lose his shoes on the court.
