good mor good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." secretary of state mike pompeo meets today in new york with north korea's spy chief. they shared dinner as well as smiles and drinks. their discussion today will determine if kim jong un and president trump's summit will take place. authorities are searching for a man named steven wiggins, accused of killing a deputy during a traffic stop yesterday. a woman has been arrested in connection with the officer's death and charged with first degree murder. 41 of the nation's top young spellers have advanced to the finals of the scripps national spelling bee. part one starts later this

he's got a full day of meetings scheduled of course with a top north korean official. >> they should know each other pretty well by now after having dinner last night and holding previous meetings together. but the stakes could not be higher. tara palmieri has more. >> reporter: secretary of state mike pompeo meeting face-to-face with kim jong un's right hand man, the highest-ranking north korean official to visit the u.s. in 18 years. kim reportedly oversaw the hacking of sony after their film "the interview" mocked kim jong un. they are trying to get the summit back on track. >> this will be the secretary's third meeting with kim yong chol. they've had very deep conversations where they've talked about a lot of detail about what the united states' expectations are. >> reporter: not joining pompeo, the most senior diplomat for asia, susan thornton. she's been largely cut out of these key summit negotiations,

despite being the most senior official on asia, she did not join pompeo. she plans to withdraw her nomination after the summit. but preparations for the talks are still ongoing. >> so far the readout from these meetings has been positive. >> reporter: there's a mad dash to keep the meeting on track after the president canceled it last week. now theed from try president trying to temp kim. >> i will guarantee his safety, yes. >> reporter: they say it could be on june 12 or july 12. diane, kendis? >> good to know. it is coming up. but in the meantime, now to the president's other high-stakes meeting with another kim. kardashian. she went to the white house to seek a pardon for a grandmother

serving a prison sentence. they discuss the prison reform and sentencing. kardashian-west who also met with jared kushner said they hope johnson will get another chance at life. the president ended his day the way he started it, railing against one of his number one targets, the attorney general for recusing himself from the russia investigation. he tweeted a quote from a fox news contributor. he said the recusal was an unforced betrayal of the president. earlier he said outright he wished he had picked someone else for the job. and many will spend the day under a cloud of wet weather. >> take a look at the radar, zooming in on the hurricane-like rotation of alberto, which is spinning now in the upper michigan area, a rare sight so far from the ocean. >> leftover rain hit chicago at the height of the evening

cigarette in the bathroom. that passenger was turned over to law enforcement. and now to the ukraine. it involves a journalist thought to have been killed. >> but he's not dead, and he proved it by appearing at a news conference. brad mielke can explain. >> coming at you from the "start here" studio. this story was sad, mysterious and straight-up bizarre. you have it journalist arkady babchenko, he's reportedly dead. authorities said he had been murdered by russian agents. then at a press conference, the supposedly dead journalist strolls in, very much alive. he's based in moscow, and apparently this was a sting operation designed to learn more about russian hit men. >> they haven't really explained exactly why they had to go to such elaborate lengths, releasing this fake suspect police sketch and there were photos about his supposed dead

at a time when twitter accounts are under great scrutiny, this next story shows that even if you want to talk trash anonymously, it can still catch up with you. >> ask an executive for the philadelphia 76ers who allegedly used secret accounts to defend his reputation, but ironically, that may have destroyed it. walter perez has more. >> reporter: the 76ers organization has launched an independent investigation into agencies that allegations that bryan colangelo, the 6ers

president of basketball operations, employed the use of several anonymous twitter accounts to post messages that sometimes were critical of some members of team while praising his own work. the report was posted by an online media outlet. he has since acknowledged his use of one of those accounts in question but denies any involvement with the other four. he says it was to monitor news on the basketball industry and keep an eye on current events. according to a report, tweets from those accounts at times question joel embiid's ego, offer theories about shooting problems and refer to noel as a selfish punk. meanwhile, the 76ers front office put out a statement saying that they are investigating the matter. they will report the results as soon as it is concluded. >> he doesn't have a great track record. and he's got to go.

and she was meeting with the president on serious business. she was meeting with the president in hopes of securing a pardon for a grandmother serving a life sentence for a first-time drug offense. the president posted that photo you just saw, tweeting great meeting with kim kardashian today talking about prison reform and sentencing and kardashian-west was there advocating for 63-year-old alice marie johnson of tennessee, she has served more than 20 years and is not eligible for parole. no word from the white house on whether the president will give a pardon, but he looked pretty happy to be hanging out with kim kardashian. >> as he should, but it's great to see kim kardashian use her celebrity and her influence for a legit reason. >> she hired a few lawyers on behalf of alice marie johnson as well. she says she's not giving up until she sees her freed.
