4:36 now. a new poll shows some separati in california's governors erase. the poll finds lieutenant governor gavin newsom expanded his lead with 33% of the likely voter support. republican john cox is second right now with 20%, seven points ahead of former marianne tonio villaraigosa. the top two finishers will face off in the november general election. the last call for alcohol is a step closer to getting pushed back to 4:00 a.m. the state senate has approved a bill to give seven cities to have the option to serve until 4:00. san francisco and oakland, the only bay area cities that would be allowed to move that closing time back. the measure now heads to the ags sembly. if it becomes law, it would take effect in 2021. you're never more than seven

out of the building. the atf is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect seen in the video. tim nicholas and his family were among the residents of the neighboring renaissance apartments. they were evacuated in the middle of the night. >> i have grandkids with me. i think twice at night before i go to bed really. it's scaring. knowing there's people out there doing something like this, it's crazy. >> no one was seriously hurt. but this three-alarm fire caused an estimated $55 million in damage. san francisco looking to improve 911 response times by hiring more dispatchers. the mayor's budget proposal includes $8 million to recruit an train 90 more dispatchers over the next five years. the national standard is 90%. the call center in san francisco

is understaffed. dispatchers work over time and holidays to keep up with an increasing number of calls. a number of bay area cities already ban or limit plastic straws. a bill aimed at limiting their use has cleared the as sechlbly and is headed to the state senate. supporters say plastic straws contribute to the buildup of trash in the oceans and pose a deadly danger to animals. opponents say it will make it harder for restaurants to do business. restaurants would face a $25 fine for each violation. four bay area students have made it to the final round of the prescription national spelling bee. >> from santa clara county, nydia. >> those finalists whittled down from a 516 spellers. part one of the finals is this morning. the second is tonight on espn, a different kind of finals. very exciting nonetheless.

make your way towards the concord area. expect delays there. we also have a problem now northbound 880 near high street. that is blocking the middle lanes and we are seeing slowing now as you make your way in towards oakland from the coliseum area. >> sue, thank you. we know exercise gives our brains a boost. new research shows how much and what type of exercise may promote thinking as you age. apparently the magic number is at least 52 hours of exercise over six months. scientists reviewed data from dozens of studies on couch potatoes over 60 and found those who exercise for 52 hours over that six months showed improvement in thinking. the exercise has to last an hour at a time. low intensity exercise like walking was just as good as high intensity for cognitive improvement. new at 5:00 a.m., san francisco mayor mark farrell taking a strong stance when it comes to the toxic soil scandal
